Trump’s Science Advisor, Age 31, Has a Political Science Degree

quote:
A job that's been held by some of the nation's top scientists is now occupied by a 31-year-old politics major from Princeton University.

And it's unlikely to change soon, observers say, leaving President Trump without a science adviser as the administration wrestles with a severe outbreak of the flu, lead-poisoned drinking water and record-breaking disasters that many scientists say are sharpened by rising temperatures.

More than a year into his term, Trump hasn't identified a potential nominee for the key position held by prominent scientists in Republican and Democratic administrations alike. And it stands to get harder. There's a razor-thin margin for Senate approval, and Trump's critics and supporters could complicate the confirmation of anyone who rejects mainstream climate science.

Will Anthony Kennedy Retire? What Influences a Justice’s Decision

quote:
Supreme Court justices say they do not act politically when they decide cases. But they freely admit to taking account of politics in deciding when to retire. Most justices, for instance, try to step down under politically like-minded presidents.

[..]

For the second year in a row, rumors that Justice Anthony M. Kennedy may retire from the Supreme Court are sweeping Washington. He is 81, and he is doubtless weighing many factors in deciding whether to stay. Among them, experts in judicial behavior said, are the tug of party loyalty, the preservation of his judicial legacy and how close his retirement would be to a presidential election.

Justice Kennedy has long held the decisive vote in many of the Supreme Court’s most contested and consequential cases, and his retirement would give President Trump the opportunity to move the court sharply to the right. If Justice Kennedy steps down, the confirmation fight over his successor will be titanic.

[..]

In all likelihood, she wrote, Mr. Trump would appoint a committed conservative like his first nominee, Justice Neil M. Gorsuch. In the few divided cases in which Justices Kennedy and Gorsuch participated in the court’s last term, they agreed just 38 percent of the time. By contrast, Justice Gorsuch agreed with Justice Clarence Thomas, the court’s most conservative member, 100 percent of the time.

Dat is ook een tactiek: de cyclus van aanvullingen en onderzoeken zo lang aanhouden dat ze nooit aan een concrete beschuldiging toekomen.

James Buchanan niet meer de slechtste president! :D (NYTimes)
quote:
Where does Donald Trump rank on the list of American presidents?

We surveyed presidential politics experts to sketch out a first draft of Trump’s place in presidential history.

Since our previous survey in 2014, some presidential legacies have soared (Barack Obama’s stock has climbed into the Top 10), while others have fallen (Andrew Jackson toppled to 15, out of the Top 10).

And President Trump? Let’s say that, according to the 170 members of the American Political Science Association’s Presidents and Executive Politics section who filled out our survey, he has at least three years to improve on an ignominious debut.

James Buchanan, who was at the helm as the United States careened into civil war, was dislodged from his position as our nation’s worst president by our current president, Trump. (Presidents since World War II in boldface.)

quote:
Greatness Rankings by Party:

On partisan-votes lines, Democrats ranked Ronald Reagan nine places lower than Republicans, while Democrats place Obama 10 places higher.

Counting only Republican votes, William McKinley -- best known for winning the Spanish-American war, for defeating William Jennings Bryan twice in contests for the White House and for being assassinated by the anarchist Leon Czolgosz -- holds a spot in the Top 10.

Independents admire George H.W. Bush, ranking him higher than Obama.

Trump doesn't get much of a lift from Republican-only vote: Even in their eyes, he's a bottom-five president. :P

Trump ambassador nominee had unsettling management style, women say

quote:
Doug Manchester, the billionaire nominated by President Trump to be ambassador to the Bahamas, made a fortune as a real estate developer in San Diego while also earning a reputation for his philanthropy, conservative convictions and lavish lifestyle.

In 2011, Manchester, then 69, decided to buy the struggling San Diego Union-Tribune. Over the next four years, he employed an unconventional, anachronistic management style that upended the newspaper’s culture and made many female workers uncomfortable, according to more than a dozen current and former employees who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

During the taping of a promotional video, Manchester once pulled a reporter in for a hug so intimate that it startled onlookers in the newsroom, multiple people said. He complimented young female employees on their looks, and he and other senior managers required some of them hired for a new in-house television operation to wear short black dresses and serve as hostesses for advertisers and other guests at Union-Tribune events, current and former employees said. And he once asked an on-air program host to dye her hair platinum blond, complaining that her roots were showing, employees said.
Nog zo'n engerd :X

Uitgebreid artikel over Trump's advocaat Michael Cohen, de man die de indiscreties van Trump op efficiente wijze wegwerkte dmv intimidatie, afkoopsommen en beïnvloeding van de tabloids.

Tools of Trump’s Fixer: Payouts, Intimidation and the Tabloids

quote:
As accounts of past sexual indiscretions threatened to surface during Donald J. Trump’s presidential campaign, the job of stifling potentially damaging stories fell to his longtime lawyer and all-around fixer, Michael D. Cohen.

To protect his boss at critical junctures in his improbable political rise, the lawyer relied on intimidation tactics, hush money and the nation’s leading tabloid news business, American Media Inc., whose top executives include close Trump allies.

Mr. Cohen’s role has come under scrutiny amid recent revelations that he facilitated a payment to silence a porn star, but his aggressive behind-the-scenes efforts stretch back years, according to interviews, emails and other records.

Ik vond deze op reddit, ik moest 'm even delen.

quote:
Other governments around the world work. They build infrastructure, invest in the safety and satisfaction of their citizens, and safeguard their well being and their future. Autocracies like China work. Social democracies like Denmark and Norway work. Mixed economies and democratic Republics like many other countries in Europe work. These countries have their flaws - but they work. They are all at least executing their vision for what they believe is best for their people, even if in the case of countries like China, it is more oppressive than it ought to be. But they work.

America's government doesn't work. It isn't our constitution or our economy or any other high-level ideological problem that cripples America.

It's Republicans. Republicans broke America. They continue to break it, through malicious effort and egregious incompetence both.

All you have to do is look through their voting record to see the truth. They are far more obstructionist than the Democrats have ever been. The Democrats are pathologically cooperative, even when they probably should be resistant.

President Obama pulled the country out of a death spiral in 2008, and did a great job, under the circumstances, rebuilding the country.

Now imagine what he could have accomplished if Republicans hadn't obstinately sabotaged him and Democrats at every turn.

Then, when given the chance to prove Democrats wrong - when given every single branch of nearly every facet of government, what do they do?

They elect a fucking Russian puppet. They carve out vast chunks of our collective, social properties and toss them to unelectable, unimpeachable corporate monopolies - in essence, they strip the people of their power and give it to profit-seeking entities that reward elected officials with cash and opportunity.

Republicans steal the very power the people have over their government from the people, in exchange for bribes and cash. They do it for corporations. And the Trump administration is actually stealing our sovereign power and our democratic freedoms, and giving them to Russia, either for his own personal safety from their blackmail, or for financial gain in the form of the loans we know he's getting thanks to what his sons have said on record in years passed - we don't know which, and it is Republicans working feverishly to ensure we, the people, never find out.

Republicans are obviously, manifestly the problem. You can pick apart any small flaws in the Democratic party - they are legion, sure, as any human endeavor has myriad flaws.

But Republicans are not a flawed organization that otherwise fulfills its functions.

Republicans are the antithesis of governance. They are a cancer on democracy, a toxin to society and civilization. They are a virulence that infects us with fascism, autocracy, and dysfunction.

Trump is only the barest, fattest manifestation of that truth.
