Don't get me wrong, ik heb niks tegen Manning en het is haar goed recht, maar dit zal niet lekker zijn voor het imago.

The retreat of the United States under Trump has played a big role in this push, Malmstrom says. Countries around the world are desperate for new trading partners, and the EU, confident again after years of economic crisis and Britain’s vote in 2016 to leave the bloc, has eagerly filled the gap.

“We have shown that we have overcome that acute crisis, so many countries are turning to Europe for leadership and for partnership,” said Malmstrom, who will also be in Davos.

“With other countries we are now setting the standards and that is also why it is bad for the U.S. to withdraw because there are standards set now and they will be global.”

Ja, daar gaan ze in de Verenigde Staten nog heel lang last van houden. Trump is over vier jaar, hopelijk eerder, vertrokken, maar dit komen ze de eerste 20 jaar niet meer te boven.

Eigenlijk vind ik dat Europa nog wel meer had kunnen doen touwens. Zo'n kans krijg je natuurlijk zelden. Putin en Jinping rollen huilend van het lachen door hun kantoor, en wij zitten hier een beetje commentaar te leveren. Wat handel betreft zijn we goed bezig zeker sinds Trump daar zit. Maar we hadden zeker in de begindagen dat de wetenschap in de Verenigde Staten aan banden werd gelegd onder Trump vol moeten inzetten op het naar Europa halen van onderzoeksinstituten en wetenschappelijke studenten.

En ondertussen wel klagen over al die daklozen. Maar dát is dan wel weer de schuld van de DNC natuurlijk.

Laatst belde ze nog om te melden dat, jawel, het nu zó koud is in de VS dat global warming toch écht niet bestaat. En als daar in de zomer de mussen van het dak donderen (ze woont in Texas) dan ligt het eraan dat het klimaat toch al duizenden jaren verandert.

Ik had haar sinds het winnen van Trump niet meer gesproken. Had gehoopt dat ze inmiddels wel tot inkeer zou zijn gekomen, maar nee. Het gaat overigens ook steevast om de drie minuten over hoe slecht 'Obummer' wel niet was.

Ryan and his top lieutenants have not committed to a vote on the Goodlatte bill, which GOP leaders worry could undermine bipartisan negotiations. And they’re not even sure the text could garner the 218 GOP votes needed for passage in the House. Still, he’s risking a backlash from conservatives if he doesn’t put it forward for a vote.
