Matt Dalton would have preferred to take a slap shot high and hard off his mask.
But this was what he had signed up for, almost a year and a half earlier. The money was good, and the conditions far nicer than in the two years he spent playing for Nizhnekamsk of the Kontinental Hockey League, in the heart of Russian industrial gloom.
So the goalie, who grew up in little Clinton, Ont., began to sing Aegukga, carefully enunciating the foreign words he had memorized with the help of teammates in front of a panel of steely-eyed officials.
If he wanted to stop pucks at the Winter Olympics, this was the only way. He had to become South Korean. And to do that, he had to sing.
"Daehan saram, daehan euro giri bojeonhase," Dalton intoned.
"Stay true to the great Korean way," he was proclaiming – roughly – to his new countrymen.
Six years ago, Dalton was the backup to the backup goalie for the Boston Bruins. Never drafted, he had turned pro at the age of 22 after a big season in college and got a taste of the NHL by sitting on the bench for a few games. He ended up bouncing around leagues, teams and countries the way many players on the cusp of the big leagues do.
But in 2014, he got an offer from Anyang Halla, a team based in a Seoul suburb, in a country and a league he knew nothing about, and everything changed.
Then, it was four years out from the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, and the Korean Olympic Committee badly wanted to have men's and women's teams in one of the marquee Winter Games sports. The International Ice Hockey Federation, however, was worried they would be embarrassed – a fair concern given that the teams were then ranked 22nd and 23rd in the world, respectively.
The IIHF didn't want to guarantee anything, even though every Winter Olympics host nation in history has at least had a men's hockey team in the tournament.https://www.theglobeandma(...)ics/article30055116/SPOILEROm spoilers te kunnen lezen moet je zijn ingelogd. All in all a very surprising team was chosen by Craig Ramsey and Miro ¦atan, only 1 player from KHL is totally unexpected, but glad that Čajkovský is in, his %Chára" size and style is very important in such tournament. and he has a incredibly strong shoot from the blue line, so very necessary to have such defencer in the team.
14 players from C zech league is maybe too much, but all nominated players have decent season, so OK, we will again rely on Laco in the net thats good as well.
10 players from our league is a interesting move and can help the youngs much.
But there also many experiences in the team, Dominik Graňák played already 175 matches with our National Team TomᨠStarosta 140 and TomᨠSurový 118.
The oldest player in the team and also the best scorer is Laco Nagy, the youngest is one of the U20 Bronze medalist team of 2016 Matú¨ Súkeľ.
quote:The list of players includes 13 previous Olympic medallists – nine on the women’s and four on the men’s side. On the men’s squad players combine for 21 previous Olympic participations while the women’s squad will be more rejuvenated with nine players who will play their first Olympics.
16 of the 25 players on the men’s roster join from KHL teams including five from Jokerit Helsinki, the Finnish club in the Russian-based cross-border league. Six players play in the Finnish Liiga, two in Switzerland and one in Sweden.
Lasse Kukkonen is the most experienced player and will participate at the Olympics for the fourth time. He as well as Sami Lepisto (2010, 2014), Juuso Hietanen (2014) and Petri Kontiola (2014) have been part of the team that won bronze at the last Olympic men’s ice hockey tournament four years ago. The youngest players are 1999-born Miro Heiskanen and Eeli Tolvanen, who recently played at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship.
“I have a good feeling with the team. The preparation went well and gives us confidence. We are aware of the good opportunity we have and we are ready to seize it,” head coach Lauri Marjamaki said.
Sochi 2014 finalist Sweden, Norway and Germany will be Finland’s opponents in Group C.
On the women’s team goaltender Noora Raty and forward Riika Valila will play in their fourth Olympics. Valila will also write history as the oldest female athlete from Finland to compete in the Olympic Winter Games surpassing figure skater Ludowika Jakobsson. The 44-year-old originally retired from international ice hockey after playing at the 1998 and 2002 Olympics (under her maiden name Nieminen) but staged a comeback at the 2014 Olympics and has also played at the last three Women’s World Championships. With Petra Nieminen also the women’s team has a 1999-born player.
12 players join from Finnish clubs, seven play in the Swedish women’s hockey league, two join from college teams in Canada and the U.S. respectively and two play in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League for Kunlun Red Star in Shenzhen, China.
“The team includes the best available players. The selection criteria were clear. They have to fit for the roles, adapt to the group, be in shape and have skill,” said head coach Pasi Mustonen.
Finland is seeded in the “upper” Group A with current world champion USA, defending Olympic champion Canada and the Russians. The top-two teams will receive a bye to the semi-finals while the bottom two teams have to play a qualification game against one of the top-two Group B teams. Finland’s declared goal is to win a medal.
With 45 hockey players, the sport of ice hockey will be prominent in the Finnish Olympic delegation of currently 61 athletes.
