The Motocross World Championship is a worldwide motocross series sanctioned by the F.I.M.. It was inaugurated in 1957 using a 500 cc engine displacement formula. In 1962 a 250cc class was added and in 1975, a 125cc class was introduced. Prior to 1957, the championship was known as the European Championship. In 2002, the F.I.M. changed the displacement formulas to reflect the changes in engine technology and as a move towards environmentally friendlier four-stroke engines. The new MX1 class became the premier class, allowing two-stroke engines of up to 250cc and four-stroke engines of up to 450cc. The MX2 class allowed two-stroke engines of up to 125cc and four-stroke motors of up to 250cc. The MX3 class allowed two-stroke engines of up to 500cc and four stroke engines of up to 650cc.

The AMA Motocross Championship is the major motocross series of the United States, held since 1972. It is sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association and managed by MX Sports Pro Racing. The series began in 1972 with the introduction of two classes based on 500 cc and 250 cc engine formulas. A 125 cc class was added in 1974. As motocross technology developed, 500 cc two-stroke motocross bikes became too powerful for the average rider and, faced with diminishing numbers of competitors, the A.M.A. discontinued the 500 cc class after the 1993 season. A women's national championship series was introduced in 1996. Facing tightening emissions regulations, in 1997, the A.M.A. increased the allowable displacement capacity for four-stroke engines, in an effort to encourage manufacturers to develop environmentally friendlier four-stroke machines. In 2006, the 250 cc division was renamed the MX Class, with an engine formula allowing for 150–250 cc two-stroke or 251–450 cc four-stroke machines. The 125 cc class was renamed the MX Lites Class, allowing 0–125 cc two-stroke or 150–250 cc four-stroke engines. In 2009, the MX class was renamed the 450 Class and the MX Lites class was renamed the 250 Class, to reflect the fact that all the competing manufacturers had adopted four-stroke machinery.

The AMA Supercross Championship was derived from the sport of Motocross. While Motocross and Supercross are similar in many respects, there are significant differences as well. For example, the Supercross races are heavily advertised and televised motorsports events held within major cities. Also supercross tracks are more technical, not as fast as motocross but with a much higher difficulty level, further adding to the injury risk factor. While growing consistently since the '70s, in the early part of the 21st Century Supercross' popularity really took off. In the United States, Supercross races today are the second most popular form of motorsport (behind NASCAR racing). The American Motorcyclist Association awards three Supercross Championship Champs each year. They are Supercross Champion which until 2006 was referred to as 250 class, Supercross Lites East (which was the 125 East) Champion, and Supercross Lites West Champion. World Supercross Champions are named by other racing organizations around the world. Supercross racing classifications were governed by the displacement of the motorcycle's engine until 2006. In the past, Championships have been awarded in 125cc (also known as "MX2"), 250cc ("MX1"), and 500cc displacement levels (also known as "MX3"). The 250cc Champion has always been generally considered to be the most prestigious.

"It was good," Herlings said. "I had a good start, top five and worked my way to the front. I knew I had time, so I took it easy, it was a little slippery out there. Want to do it again tomorrow."

Herlings – His Chances in USA

It has now been confirmed, Jeffrey Herlings will race this weekend’s final round of the AMA Nationals, set for the Ironman circuit in Indiana. What is a brilliant move by the MX2 world champion, he gets to finally race a National, and around a circuit that will suit his style.

The weather will also play it’s part with around 25 degrees and humidity just 50% on the Saturday. The Ironman National will also be a race where the fastest American, Eli Tomac will be thinking about his AMA 450 championship and not willing to take a risk, giving Herlings a slight advantage as he has nothing to lose.

RacerX have also confirmed that Herlings will race with the number 784 on his factory KTM. Of course the bike Herlings will race in America will be very different to his Grand Prix machine.

MXLarge will be at the race and give you a full coverage, not to mention interviews after the racing. Pretty excited for this one, and the perfect prelude to the USGP a week later, where Herlings and Tomac will again go head to head.

MX Sports Pro Racing Apologizes for Releasing Confirmation of Herlings' Participation at Ironman National

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (August 23, 2017) - Due to an internal error while we were traveling to the Ironman National in Crawfordsville, Indiana, MX Sports Pro Racing mistakenly released a draft of a press release involving multi-time FIM World Champion Jeffrey Herlings' possible participation in this weekend's final round of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross. Herlings has not actually entered the event and has only begun testing the bike he would have to ride, should he choose to participate in the AMA Pro Racing-sanctioned event; AMA Pro Racing and the FIM-sanctioned MXGP have different rules and regulations, and Herlings would not be able to use his usual race bike for this event.

"We totally jumped the starting gate on crafting a press release, and I take full responsibility for any confusion this may have caused," said MX Sports Pro Racing's Davey Coombs. "I apologize for the error and hope that Jeffrey enjoys his time here in America as he prepares for the main reason he and his team are here, which is next weekend's MXGP of the USA in Florida."

UPDATE 8/23 4:34 PM PST: Red Bull KTM has officially confirmed and announced that Jeffrey Herlings will race the 2017 Ironman MX. He will compete in the 450 class and pit alongside Marvin Musquin.

The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team has confirmed today that multi-time FIM MX2 World Champion Jeffrey Herlings will compete in the final round of the AMA Pro Motocross Championship this Saturday, Aug. 26 in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

Herlings, who currently holds 2nd overall in the premier MXGP Championship, made the last-minute decision to race the KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION on U.S. soil before heading to his regularly scheduled stop at the MXGP of the USA in Jacksonville, Florida one week later.

Herlings: "Since I was already coming to the U.S. to prepare for the hot and humid conditions that we're going to face in Florida, I thought it would be a fun opportunity to race against the best riders in America while I am already here. I'm looking forward to a fun weekend with the team."

Musquin, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's sole rider based under the U.S. tent, currently sits 3rd overall in the 450 Class championship standings as the season comes to a close. After battling a mid-season knee injury, Musquin came on strong in the latter half of the season to carry a six-moto win-streak into the penultimate round of racing. Musquin continues to strive for an additional 50 points this Saturday in Indiana.

Opinie van wat mensen over deze eenmalige deelname van Herlings

Davey Coombs is the man in charge of the AMA Nationals, and also runs the best American website and magazine in www.RacerXonline.com. As excited as anyone to have the Flying Dutchman racing this weekend, you can be sure he will welcome Herlings with open arms, as he does to all the GP riders who race his series.

“Jeffrey has nothing to lose,” Coombs said. “He will probably have more support from appreciative fans than he expects because everyone appreciates an extra effort and competitiveness like his showing by jumping in on an off-weekend. I know I sure do! He’s also coming at the right time, with momentum and confidence he didn’t really have at the beginning of the MXGP season. He’s figured the 450 out and he getting priceless lessons battling Tony Cairoli every round now. Because the track is fairly new and neutral, I would not be shocked if he won, and I expect him to be on the podium in the least. I just hope he has fun and then gets another crack at Eli and Cooper next weekend at the MXGP of the USA and a more familiar format.”

Adam Wheeler is the most professional and well credited media guy in the MXGP press tent. Always neutral, and classy, the Barcelona based Brit spreads his time between MotoGP and MXGP, and his insight is always interesting. Wheeler works for many of the biggest media outlets around the world, including www.racerxonline.com, www.dirtbikerider.com, and for Monster Energy, KTM, and many other companies inside the industry. He also has his own e-magazine and website, www.ontrackoffroad.com.

“Jeffrey almost seems to take pride in jetting into a Grand Prix at the last minute and catching the first available flight on a Sunday afternoon so to learn that he would be heading out early to the US and to experience some of the Aldon Baker treatment was a surprise. The ambition to compete on American soil has been in place since a mooted outing at Unadilla was on the cards in the midst of his second MX2 title attempt so the fact that he has made the gate at Iron Man is not a revelation. 2017 has been just as frustrating as it has been satisfying (in parts) for #84 so he’s naturally looking for more challenges.

“I’d put money on podium contention. Herlings has always adapted very quickly to race situations. I think the biggest obstacle will be the one-day format and gaining sufficient knowledge of the track and the conditions to be competitive. If he can take to the line comfortably with the 450 SX-F then watch out. Of course, if he is anywhere near Marvin then he’s smart enough to be aware of the bigger picture. With the exception of Shaun Simpson’s 2015 appearance at Unadilla and the factory Suzuki duo of Strijbos and Desalle making a late turnout in 2013 there has not been a wild-card with more interest on this side of the Atlantic.”

British media guy, David Bulmer has travelled the world more than most mx media. From a train trip from London to Thailand, and driving a campervan from one end of America to the other, just to mention two of his massive journeys. He has missed just one GP this year, and been doing a brilliant job for www.vitalmx.com in their coverage of the MXGP series. He also helps MXLarge out when we need an extra hand at the races. He also works for the Suzuki factory team.

“I think he has as good a chance as anyone to win,” Bulmer said. “Obviously Tomac will be wanting to win the championship and obviously Marvin and Blake are riding well. Bogle won last weekend, so there is no reason why he can’t win. He is good enough he had proven that whenever he gets on the bike. Weather he does this weekend is anyone’s guess. Hopefully the dirt start might help him, and I think he might find it easier to come through the pack, but the top three in the AMA Nationals are as good as the top three in the GPs. It’s going to be good to watch, should bring a lot of interest for the series and I think it’s good that he has done it, and I think everyone should be excited to watch it.”

American Dan Lamb, the owner of www.Motoxaddicts.com is a massive fan of the sport in America and Europe, and actually sits up watching MXGP races, or records them and watches them when he wakes up. One of the best American websites, with coverage from both AMA and FIM, Lamb will be attending this weekend’s race for MXlarge, and we are always excited to see what interviews and insight he will bring us.

“How will Jeffrey do in the 450 class at Ironman? Since coming alive in the middle of his rookie MXGP season in Valkenswaard, Jeffrey has arguably—some might give the nod to Antonio Cairoli—been the man to beat over there. The former three-time MX2 champion has been steadily building confidence on the 450 against what I personally think is the deepest field of MXGP talent I have ever seen. With that said, I think Jeffrey is a huge favourite to be on the podium, and I would not be surprised at all if that spot on the podium turned out to be the top spot.

“Playing in Jeffrey’s favour is the fact that he is 101 points behind Cairoli in the MXGP World Championship title chase, and free to put it all on the line if he feels there’s an opportunity to win. There is also the track. The Ironman circuit’s loam, elevation changes and natural terrain will be right in Jeffrey’s wheelhouse.

“There will be quite a few people wondering who “The Bullet” on the #784 is. It will not take long for them to figure it out if he is challenging the likes of Eli Tomac, Blake Baggett, Marvin Musquin and the rest of the 450MX field for a podium spot. We are just happy we will be there to watch it.”

Irishman Jonathan McCready loves the game, and his website www.gatedrop.com is always loaded with up to date news and great interviews. Without question the best website in the UK, and their GP coverage is also first class.

“Jeffrey Herlings Ironman – I think it is brilliant that Jeffrey is doing this, it adds an extra layer of excite at final round that will also decide the 450 title. The fans are the real winners here!

“If everything goes well and he adapts to the bike, the track and gets good starts, I think he should definitely contend for the win, if any of that is not quite right, a win might not be possible. A would possibly go for a 3-1 for Herlings, a definite contender but the AMA regulars will not let him have it easy, the last thing they want is an MXGP rider coming in and going 1-1 on their turf, it should make for some brilliant racing. And the great thing is Tomac and Herlings, no matter who wins, get to have a re-match the weekend after! It’s a brilliant week for the sport, no doubt about that and we should all enjoy no matter who wins.”

Ironman klinkt als een soort van endurance. Wat is het format van de race? 30 Minuten en 2 rondjes?

Ironman triathlons idd. Maar dat is niet in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

30+2 net als de MXGP maar een uur minder pauze voor de tweede manche.

Welcome to Racerhead and the last weekend of the domestic AMA season. The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship will end with tomorrow’s Ironman National in Indiana, and the 450 Motocross title will be decided between Eli Tomac, Blake Baggett, and Marvin Musquin. Eli is the prohibitive favorite, as he has more than a moto’s lead in points, but now there’s a monkey wrench that’s been throw into the works that just made Indiana a lot more interesting.

As you probably know by now, we have some company here. Multi-time FIM Motocross World Champion Jeffrey Herlings was on his way to Aldon Baker Baker’s Factory in Florida to spend some time there getting ready for next weekend’s Monster Energy MXGP of USA in Jacksonville, Florida. Herlings has long wanted to do a national round in America, and he got to thinking that it might be fun to sign up for the race in Indiana tomorrow. He called his team manager, Joel Smets, back in Europe and got permission, but first he wanted to test the production-based KTM he would have to ride.

Meanwhile, Smets got on the phone and started the sometimes-arduous process of getting his rider cleared by the Dutch Federation, sorting out an AMA Pro license, and signing him up for the race. It was sometime on Tuesday that we realized this might really happen, though Herlings wouldn’t know for sure until he rode the bike on Wednesday. Just to be ready, MX Sports Pro Racing pulled together a press release to send out when the decision was made. We would all be heading from West Virginia to Indiana on Wednesday anyway.

Of course Murphy’s Law kicked in around 10:30 a.m. and things went wrong in a hurry. Due to a communications error (read: hitting “send” instead of “save”), the press release went out before anyone had actually received confirmation from KTM, the Baker’s Factory, or even Herlings himself. He wasn’t signed up, and immediate panic came over me and a few others at MX Sports Pro Racing. I texted Aldon and apologized, and he replied that it had not been decided yet. I also got a hold of Red Bull KTM’s Roger DeCoster and he said likewise. Knowing that we screwed up, we went ahead and sent out a follow-up note saying the first release was premature, that Herlings had not signed up, and just tried to pull the tear-off after my face was covered in egg.

Two hours later, Aldon sent me this text: “Can Jeffrey ride the A practice?” I responded, “absolutely.” Aldon then asked, “What about press day on Thursday?” I said sure. Five minutes later, he finally wrote, “It’s a go! We will be there.” Whew! I was off the hook. Within a few minutes, KTM sent out their own press release, and suddenly, Ironman got a whole lot more interesting.

So Jeffrey Herlings becomes the latest MXGP competitor to drop in and do a race here in the middle of the season. It’s been done before with some real success by the likes of Stefan Everts, Clement Desalle, Kevin Strijbos, Marc de Reuver, Gareth Swanepoel, and Shaun Simpson a couple years ago at Unadilla, where he finished a solid fourth. But it’s also gone not-so-well at times, like when three-time 125cc World Champion Alessio Chiodi snapped the frame on his Husqvarna at Steel City, or when Pedro Tragter rode Unadilla.

To me, this feels like when Everts came to Unadilla in 1997. The hype was very real, because Stefan would be racing against his old GP rival Greg Albertyn, who had moved to the States following three world titles in the early nineties. Everts finished fourth overall but acquitted himself extremely well. Had he not crashed at the top of Screw-U, I think he had a legitimate shot at winning. Herlings has a very real shot. As I told MXGeoff for MXLarge.com’s preview, he has nothing to lose. He will probably have more support from appreciative fans than he expects, because everyone appreciates an extra effort and competitiveness like he is showing by jumping in on an off-weekend. I know I sure do! He’s also coming at the right time, with momentum and confidence he didn’t really have at the beginning of the MXGP season. He’s figured the 450 out, he’s healthy, and he’s getting priceless lessons battling Antonio Cairoli every round now. Because the track is fairly new and neutral, I would not be shocked if he won, and I expect him to be on the podium at least.

What would be ideal would be to see Eli wrap it up in the first moto, and then those two and Blake and Marvin have the last moto to just slug it out. It would be a fantastic end to a long and very good season, and then Eli and Jeffrey can do it again on yet another neutral track—WW Motocross Park in Jacksonville—for next weekend’s MXGP of USA, only then it will be with Jeffrey’s MXGP friends, like Cairoli, Tim Gajser, Romain Febvre, Gautier Paulin, and more. What a great two weekends we have to end the 2017 motocross season here in America.

Want to know more about Herlings’ trip to Indiana? GuyB caught up with him for a Vital MX interview during press day (during which he looked fast and relaxed).

Besides all that, it’s been kind of hectic and busy here at the Ironman. There’s was a Team USA press conference this afternoon, followed by some work on the track (no, we’re not putting the wall jump back in that Dean Wilson was bunny-hopping yesterday), and then the races tomorrow, followed by a barbecue with all of the riders and race teams, and then an awards ceremony/brunch at the Lucas Oil mansion. Then it’s off to Jacksonville for the Monster Energy MXGP of USA. So let me hand this off to the other guys and the rest of Racerhead.

TALKING TO HERLINGS (JASON WEIGANDT)
Yes, this Herlings entry into tomorrow’s Ironman National is going to draw serious opinions regardless of the result, kind of like the way that big McGregor/Mayweather fight was supposed to do on Saturday night. All sides would be able to argue something depending on how it turned out. I talked to Jeffrey himself this afternoon, though, and I can tell you he’s not thinking of it in that way. He’s not here to prove anything or show anyone anything, he’s just here because he’s always dreamed of racing in America and this is his best chance to do it. He was already scheduled to fly to the U.S. on Tuesday, but as soon as his chain derailed in the second moto at last Sunday’s Swedish GP, he realized his title hopes were just about completely gone. At that point, he realized there would be little risk in trying a National here, so he asked KTM’s Pit Beirer and Pit said it would be okay.

Luckily Red Bull KTM has Trey Canard’s bike still in the team truck, so that’s what Herlings will ride. Since he showed up on Tuesday night, he only got to ride on Wednesday at the Baker’s Factory in Florida, and he says between the heat and jet lag that it wasn’t the most fun day of riding. Then he was off to Indiana for press day, but that’s only about 20 minutes of riding. The program here is really just being thrown together—Herlings runs Pirelli tires but he says as of right now he only has one rear tire. Someone is coming with more tires and some other stuff tomorrow morning. So this is all a bit last minute, but he doesn’t care because he’s always wanted to do this and he might never get another chance.

Jeffrey told me he does recognize that if he goes out and struggles it could make the rest of the riders in the GPs look bad, as he’s well aware of how the internet conversations usually go. But that, too, isn’t enough to stop him from trying it for fun. Due to AMA production rules (versus his full works GP bike) there are some differences in his bike on Saturday, as well as different fuel regulations, which do change the engine characteristics. But, he isn’t using any of that as an excuse, telling me the difference in bike isn’t the difference between winning and losing the race. Besides, he just wants to try it because this has been a life long goal of his. So consider it a dream fulfilled.

You know, being in Europe and seeng how the guys have the bikes set up, it looks similar here already - Herlings is on softer suspension than Tomac by a mile just watching the bikes.... When are American riders going to realize that stiff AF doesn't work as well outdoors? The Euros have that figured for sure.

Herlings is just embarrassing them
