The Trump administration is expected to appoint a special envoy for directly communicating with a top aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to a new report. ..The envoy’s job would involve negotiating with Surkov over ending the three-year-old conflict in eastern Ukraine, which began when Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine and backed pro-Russian separatists in the country....German Chancellor Angela Merkel supports opening the channel, according to the report, and raised the idea while meeting President Trump at the White House in March.

quote:AP: Did you expect you would have good chemistry with her?
TRUMP: No. Because, um, I'm at odds on, you know, the NATO payments and I'm at odds on immigration. We had unbelievable chemistry. And people have given me credit for having great chemistry with all of the leaders, including el-Sissi. ...
AP: Do you feel like you have changed the office of the presidency, how the presidency can be used to effect change?
TRUMP: I think the 100 days is, you know, it's an artificial barrier. It's not very meaningful. I think I've established amazing relationships that will be used the four or eight years, whatever period of time I'm here. I think for that I would be getting very high marks because I've established great relationships with countries, as President el-Sissi has shown and others have shown. Well, if you look at the president of China, people said they've never seen anything like what's going on right now. I really liked him a lot. I think he liked me. We have a great chemistry together. ...
TRUMP: I've developed great relationships with all of these leaders. Nobody's written that. In fact, they said, "Oh, well, he's not treating them nicely," because on NATO, I want them to pay up. But I still get along with them great, and they will pay up. In fact, with the Italian prime minister yesterday, you saw, we were joking, "Come on, you have to pay up, you have to pay up." He'll pay.
Typisch dit, wel.quote:AP: You did put out though, as a candidate, you put out a 100-day plan. Do you feel like you should be held accountable to that plan?
TRUMP: Somebody, yeah, somebody put out the concept of a hundred-day plan.
I don't see any plan at all, sir.quote:

People don’t go around asking about NATO if I’m building a building in Manhattan, right? So they asked me, Wolf ... asked me about NATO, and I said two things. NATO’s obsolete — not knowing much about NATO, now I know a lot about NATO — NATO is obsolete, and I said, “And the reason it’s obsolete is because of the fact they don’t focus on terrorism.” You know, back when they did NATO there was no such thing as terrorism.

Then I watched him interviewed and it was like he never even was here. It's incredible. I watched him interviewed a week later and it's like he was never in my office. And you can even say that.

quote:Entire U.S. Senate to go to White House for North Korea briefing
Top Trump administration officials will hold a rare briefing on Wednesday at the White House for the entire U.S. Senate on the situation in North Korea, senior Senate aides said on Monday.
All 100 senators have been asked to the White House for the briefing by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the aides said.
While top administration officials routinely travel to Capitol Hill to address members of Congress on foreign policy and national security matters, it is unusual for the entire 100-member Senate to go to such an event at the White House, and for those four top officials to be involved.
U.S. officials have expressed mounting concern over North Korea's nuclear and missile tests, and its threats to attack the United States and its Asian allies.
President Donald Trump criticized North Korea's "continued belligerence" and said its actions were destabilizing during a telephone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday, the White House said.
The briefing will take place at 3 p.m. EDT.
House aides said they were working with the White House to set a similar briefing for members of the House of Representatives.

De achtergrond hiervan was dat een bekende Amerikaan zei 'you could be the greatest president ever' tijdens smalltalk. Vervolgens zei Trump overal dat die man zei 'you will be the greatest president ever'.

Tick tock...quote:McConnell: No deal yet on government funding
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said lawmakers are continuing to negotiate on a bill to keep the government funded and prevent a shutdown at the end of the week.
McConnell offered no news of progress in the talks but said the goal was to complete work “very soon”
“As we all know, bipartisan talks continued through the state work period on the way forward on government funding legislation,” he said from the Senate floor.
“Those discussions continue this week so we can complete our work on that issue very soon.”
The White House is pressing for money to be included in the bill that would begin paying for a wall on the Mexican border.
Democrats say they will oppose any bill with funding for the wall. Republicans will need Democratic support to get the spending bill to Trump’s desk.
A supplemental request sent to Congress earlier this year included roughly $1.5 billion for the project.
Lawmakers have until Friday night to pass legislation avoiding a shutdown.
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) accused the administration of using the border wall to “hold the government hostage.”
“If the administration insists on funding for a wall in the bill, it will endanger the prospects of the bill passing and raise the prospects of a government shutdown because of a border wall we believe is a pointless waste of taxpayer money for several reasons,” he said from the Senate floor.
Schumer added that he thought the talks among congressional leadership were making progress before the White House became involved.
“The four-corner negotiations, that is, Leader McConnell, myself, Speaker Ryan and Leader Pelosi have been going very well until a monkey wrench was thrown into them,” he said, referring to Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
Republicans hold the White House and majorities in the House and Senate, raising the political danger for the GOP if there is a shutdown.
