quote:On the eve of St. Patrick's Day, Donald Trump welcomed Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny.
In the spirit of good will, Trump shared his favorite Irish proverb he holds near and dear to his heart. But the poetic words stumbling out of his mouth raised some eyebrows, especially from those on Twitter.
Turns out the proverb was written by a Nigerian poet.
The setup hinted promise. "As we stand together with our Irish friends, I’m reminded of that proverb—and this is a good one, this is one I like, I’ve heard it for many many years and I love it," said Trump, from the White House.
Always remember to forget the friends that proved untrue, but never forget to remember those that have stuck by you.’ We know that, politically speaking, a lot of us know that, we know it well, it’s a great phrase.
quote:Trump is of paternal German ancestry and maternal Scottish ancestry. His mother and grandparents were born in Europe.
His paternal grandfather, Friedrich Trump, originally emigrated to the United States in 1885, became a citizen in 1892, and amassed a fortune operating boom-town restaurants and boarding houses in the Seattle area and Klondike, Canada. After returning to Kallstadt, Germany and marrying Elisabeth Christ in 1902, the newlyweds moved to New York City; moving back to Germany was not possible because Friedrich had not completed the mandatory military service and had not registered his initial emigration to the United States.
His father Fred was born in the Bronx, and became a New York City real estate developer. His mother Mary emigrated from her birthplace of Tong, Lewis, Scotland to New York, where she worked as a maid. Fred and Mary met in New York and married in 1936, raising their family in Queens.
His uncle John G. Trump—a professor at MIT from 1936 to 1973—was involved in radar research for the Allies in World War II, and helped design X-ray machines that prolonged the lives of cancer patients. in January 1943, physicist Nikola Tesla died in his room at the New Yorker Hotel, and the FBI requested John Trump to examine Tesla's papers and equipment.
The Trump family were originally Lutherans, but Trump's parents belonged to the Reformed Church in America. The family name, which was formerly spelled Drumpf, was changed to Trump during the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century. Trump has said that he is proud of his German heritage; he served as grand marshal of the 1999 German-American Steuben Parade in New York City.
