The video he saw was not shot in Iran, it did not show the exchange of cash, it was not “top secret,” it was not “a military tape,” and it was not “provided by Iran.” Nor was it released to embarrass the United States.
quote:I was born and raised deep in Eastern KY, where nearly every male of working age followed their fathers into the coal mines. Some moved away, as I did, but most aren’t prepared for the world beyond their small rural community and, when they return, fall into the trap of poverty. A few of the young men I went to school with have have been killed in the mines. My brother-in-law is currently laid off with a bad knee from working in the mines. My father’s best friend is also out of work from the mines with no compensation, and he’d been working with his company for around 40 years. They both depend on federal aid for health care for themselves and their families, heating/electricity assistance, food stamps, and so on.There have been so many excellent programs to help these miners relearn trades and get back into society but they will not take them. No matter how many times I tell my brother-in-law to reach out to these resources, he finds an excuse. He’s too dumb, can’t do this or can’t do that, too old to change, etc. They don’t want change. They want the mines, yet when you talk with them about the lifestyle they complain about the danger, the damage it does to one’s body, and the hours. “It’s hard work and nobody should have to do it,” my BIL says all the time. Then why not go to these programs that not only pay you to learn, but help land you a job afterwards? It infuriates me that everyone I know from back home will cut off their noses to spite their face. When I try to explain why it’s bad to put their faith into a man who has never lived like they have -- as in choosing between rent and electricity, eating mac and cheese because you can’t afford anything else, taping up your windows because they’re broken and you can’t afford to repair it, etc -- somehow I’m the bad guy. According to them, Trump is going to save them. When I ask from who or what, they can’t give me a single concrete example. It’s always a vague answer like “the Democrats” or “corruption.”My father is very ill and his life depends on Obamacare. Without it, he would be dead today. Even though he had pre-existing conditions, his insurance now covers the surgery he needs to walk again. And yet he’s in full support of abolishing it for whatever plan the GOP has in mind. He agrees with the funding cuts for social programs, PBS, meals on wheels, etc as they don't affect him personally. I don’t know what to say anymore.I feel like I’ve reached a limit to my compassion for these issues. I'm ashamed to say it as these people are my heritage, but it almost feels like they must learn a harsh lesson by losing the safety net they've become so reliant on. They simply will not listen to reason.

quote:The rural voters who turned out in droves to elect President Donald Trump would be some of the biggest losers under the new White House budget. The spending blueprint calls for a deeper cut to the Agriculture Department — 21 percent — than to just about any other agency. Trump would slash programs that invest in rural infrastructure, target rural public radio and demolish food-aid programs that farmers rely on to buy their products..Rural voters flocked to Trump and his promises to roll back environmental regulations and overhaul Obamacare, block illegal immigrants and put blue-collar Americans back to work. They applauded his nods to farmers on the campaign trail. While many of those promises are in the budget, some are reading the cuts affecting farmers and rural communities as a sign from the White House that middle America isn’t a priority.“Rural America elected Trump. His message to rural America is, ‘I don’t care,’” said Dee Davis, founder of the Center for Rural Strategies, a Whitesburg, Kentucky-based nonpartisan group that advocates on behalf of rural communities.
