A Pair of 1934 Hispano-Suizas - J12 Coupé de Ville & K6 Coupé by Fernandez et Darrin
Featured today is an exceptional pair of Hispano-Suizas with coachwork by Fernandez et Darrin. The two were ordered in 1934 by Anthony Gustav de Rothschild of England, for himself and his wife Yvonne Cahen d’Anvers. They were recently shown by Robert M. and Anne Brockinton Lee at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance..
The first, to be covered is the unique Hispano-Suiza J12 Coupe de Ville (below) with Fernandez et Darrin coachwork. It was designed for owner-driven use, and includes a removable front roof section; it consists of a pair of removable side panels and a center section that rolls back into the rear of the top for use in pleasant weather.
The famed J12 is equipped with a Marc Birkigt designed V-12, 9.5-liter (580 c.i.) engine with overhead valves that developed 220 h.p. and could power the car to over 100 m.p.h. The Type 68 chassis was also beautifully engineered and featured servo-assisted brakes and shock absorbers that can be adjusted from the dashboard. The chassis was first offered in 1931, and approximately 120 examples were produced over a seven-year period; all were fitted with custom coachwork.
The second of the pair of Hispano-Suiza’s (below) is one of the K6 models that were built between 1934 and 1937. It is equipped with a 5.2-liter (317 c.i.) o.h.v. straight six-cylinder engine producing 120 h.p. that was capable of powering the car at speeds of up to 80 m.p.h. Intended for formal use, it was also fitted with Fernandez et Darrin coachwork similar to the J12, but with an open front compartment. The pair were supplied by London Hispano-Suiza agent, J. Smith & Co. Ltd.
The cars were delivered to the Rothschilds at the end of September 1934, and the family owned the K6 up until the mid-1980s. The pair was shown together at Pebble Beach after a four-year restoration at Robert M.Lee’s own facility. The J12 Fernandez et Darrin Coupe de Ville was one of the four nominees for the Best of Show Award, and the K6 won the Class F: Fernandez et Darrin Coachwork award.
