Naast het feit dat de 24 uur van Le Mans clasht met de F1 race in Azerbeidzjan is een groter probleem dat de race op de Nurburgring clasht met de Formule E race in New York. Rebellion stapt over naar de LMP2

The announcement marks a considerable shift from Rebellion’s earlier statement that they team intended to return to the LMP1 Privateer grid in 2017 developing a new LMP1 L car for next season. With those plans now put on hold, ByKolles are the only team confirmed for next season in the sub-class.
Rebellion’s statement reads:
Rebellion Racing first raced in LMP1 in 2009, running a single Lola chassis powered by an Aston Martin V12 engine. In 2010, Rebellion Racing ran two LMP1 cars, with the Lola chassis powered by Judd’s 5.5L V10 engines. Between 2011 and 2014, the team formed a close partnership with Toyota Motorsport GmbH and using the normally aspirated 3.4L V8 Toyota engine, Rebellion Racing achieved many successes including finishing in fourth place overall at Le Mans in 2012 and again in 2014.
With a change of Technical Regulations at the start of 2014 when the LMP1 class moved to a fuel-flow restricted formula, Rebellion Racing in association with ORECA built their own LMP1 cars, the Rebellion R-Ones. The Rebellion R-One cars were initially powered by the Toyota V8 that had served the team so well and then in 2015, as the team strived for even more performance, the Rebellion R-One cars were re-engineered to use the V6 twin turbo engine from AER.
That fourth place overall finish at Le Mans in the 24 Hour race in 2014 showed that the Rebellion R-One privateer cars could mix with the Manufacturer hybrid cars. Since 2014, Manufacturer development has significantly pushed the boundaries of LMP1 and, after having been the main flag bearer for the privateer entrants in the category for the past seven seasons, Rebellion Racing will next year move to the new style LMP2.
It is an exciting time for LMP2 as new specification cars, which will be eligible to race in all the top sportscar championships around the world, are currently being unveiled by the chassis suppliers. The pace of these new LMP2 cars is forecast to be significantly quicker than the current cars and with high levels of competition between the teams and the cars, the challenge is very attractive to Rebellion Racing, we are looking forward to this new adventure.
Missing from the (very carefully worded) statement are two key details – The choice of chassis, with several teams still weighing up the potential strengths and weaknesses of the four available options, and the details of the Championship, or Championships, that the team will race in.
With the team having enjoyed considerable success in North America in recent years, back to back Petit Le Mans wins in 2012 and 2013 a major team cv highlight, it would be absolutely no surprise to see Rebellion’s 2017 programme feature some of the IMSA enduros as well as a programme designed to cement their continued appearance in the Le Mans 24 Hours.
DSC expects there to be a two car entry posted for the 2017 Le Mans 24 Hours by the Swiss flagged, UK based team.

Live race coverage will continue to be available across multiple platforms, including Eurosport channels and Eurosport Player - the live and on-demand digital platform which will also offer a range of additional content, such as on-board camera feeds.
Peter Hutton, Chief Executive of Eurosport said: “Motorsport fans are some of the most committed you can find, so we are delighted to extend our agreement to show the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mansand the world’s best endurance races to continue to fuel their passion for the sport. We look forward to more of this unique series over the next four years, available to fans at home and on-the-go across Eurosport’s platforms.”
Pierre Fillon, President of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest said: “We’re very happy about the renewal of our partnership with Eurosport for Le Mans 24 Hours for the next four years. We’re delighted that this agreement also guarantees continued coverage of the FIA World Endurance Championship. We’re very focused on developing TV coverage of the Le Mans 24 Hours and the FIA WEC, and we gave an undertaking to our partners to achieve this. This new agreement confirms our determination. It will strengthen our positioning and result in the enhanced broadcasting of our world championship events and the flagship race, the Le Mans 24 Hours, across Europe and Asia-Pacific.”

Dat is de enige reden, eigenlijk. Audi als merk kan diesel niet meer verkopen dus moest er een beslissing gemaakt worden, of een nieuwe auto bouwen met een benzine (of andere brandstof) of terugtrekken. Helaas hebben ze voor het tweede gekozen, wellicht ook omdat ze voor dit jaar al een compleet nieuwe auto hadden gebouwd.quote:

Ondanks dat het een logische beslissing is van Audi toch wel shocking. Het was moeilijk voor te stellen dat zo'n succesvol team zou stoppen.

The signing of the Argentinian has yet to be confirmed, but Toyota Motorsport GmbH technical director Pascal Vasselon revealed that the team has already completed its 2017 line-up.
Asked if there would be any changes in its full-time roster, he told Autosport: "Maybe."
Vasselon would not comment further when Lopez's name was put to him.
It remains unclear whose seat Lopez will take in the existing two-car line-up, but speculation suggests that 41-year-old Stephane Sarrazin is the most likely to be replaced.
Toyota is not expected to announce Lopez until January.
Lopez, a former Renault Formula 1 test driver and GP2 race winner, already has sportscar experience in the GT ranks.
He sporadically raced Ferraris in the American Le Mans Series and the FIA GT Championship in 2007-08, and made a one-off aboard an Aston Martin in the FIA GT1 World Championship on home ground in San Luis in 2010.

Audi en Porsche hadden onder elkaar afgesproken om 2 auto's in te zetten. Toyota wilde eigenlijk 3 inzetten maar omdat de nieuwe auto een jaar naar voren gehaald moest worden werden dat er toch 2. Geen akkoordjequote:

Ik had gehoopt dat BMW in zou stappen maar die hebben gekozen voor GTE klasse.
De enige fabrikant die interesse heeft is Peugeot. Maar zolang de kosten zo hoog blijven zullen die wel niet instappen.

Newly-crowned FIA World Endurance champion Marc Lieb will not be part of Porsche’s LMP1 line-up in 2017, sources have confirmed to Motorsport.com.
The German driver, along with his teammates in the #2 919 Hybrid, Romain Dumas and Neel Jani took the WEC drivers’ title on Saturday with a sixth-place finish in the season finale at Bahrain.
However, it is understood that Lieb has been informed by his employers that he will not be returning to defend his title with Porsche in 2017.
When asked about his future by Motorsport.com in Bahrain, Lieb refused to comment.
Nick Tandy and Andre Lotterer will both join the Weissach marque’s LMP1 roster next season, with Mark Webber’s retirement having already opened up one vacancy in the team. Jani, Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley are all expected to stay.
It remains to be seen whether Lieb, a works Porsche driver since 2003, will be offered a return to the manufacturer's GT ranks.
Dumas also vulnerable
There could yet be a further change in the Porsche LMP1 line-up in 2017, with Dumas also still believed to be in danger of losing his seat.
Were the Frenchman to lose out, 2015 Le Mans 24 Hours winner Earl Bamber remains the leading candidate to take his place, although it remains to be seen how Porsche would arrange its crews in such a scenario.
Dumas insisted he still has a valid contract, but did not specify he would be back in an LMP1 car next year, only saying he will have "something to do."
“We will see what will happen,” he told Motorsport.com in Bahrain. “I have two years left on my contract [with Porsche], so I will see what I will do.
"I will have something to do. I’m 39 next month, I won quite a lot of things, so I don’t have big problems right now.”
Meanwhile. Speaking to Motorsport.com last weekend in Macau, Bamber said he had not yet been told whether he would be given the chance of a full-time LMP1 seat, but admitted it was his goal.
"I'm in if they want me,” said the New Zealander. “If they don't want me, they don't want me.
“Sure, I want to try and get back in the [LMP1] car. I won Le Mans in 2015, so it’s a big goal for me. But it's up to them if they put me in or not."

Lieb en Dumas zijn wel de zwakke schakel bij Porsche, Lotterer gaat daar waarschijnlijk heen als vervanger. En wellicht Alonso dus in 2018

Eerste wat mij (persoonlijk) opvalt: slimme zet van Vanthoor. LMP1 was voor zover ik weet zijn doel als Audi rijder, en aangezien dat dat stuk gelopen is.... Dan is Porsche wel de beste keus om via de GT's tot het LMP1 veld te komen.

Vrij schrijnend dat er vrij veel coureurs heel terecht richting WEC willen, maar dat er eigenlijk maar twee serieuze LMP1-teams zijn. Er horen daar toch zeker vijf verschillende fabrikanten in de top te zitten.

VW Group Motorsport boss Wolfgang Durheimer told Autocar’s Jim Holder that the 2016 Audi R18s, run by now defunct factory team Audi Sport Team Joest, would be available for privateer teams to run if they can raise sufficient budget.
Durheimer confirmed that there had been interest in the cars, presumed at this point to involve Team Joest, but urged caution over hopes for a deal to race the cars.
“These cars are on a different level technologically to anything else racing today, including F1,” he said. “They are not cars that a privateer can just operate, but we are very willing to co-operate with any team that has the expertise and budget to race them.”

Hoe dan ook: ipv de LMP1 een soort GT1. Racewagens gebaseerd op onder andere de Porsche 918, LaFerrari, Koenigsegg, Pagani, Aventador, P1, enzovoort.
