– Berlin Festival Takes a Creative Break –
After a successful move from Tempelhof to Treptow and two successful editions on the Spree, the Berlin Festival is taking a creative break.
Berlin never stands still. It is a city that is always changing, restless and constantly on the lookout for new creative impulses. Clubs open and close, only to spring up again in a new place with a new look. Partygoers flock to illegal raves turned mainstream chic; entire streets are taken over by clubbers and pub crawlers, then abandoned for new venues just a few years later. This same process is what fuels the creative passion of the city’s local club scene, a scene unlike any other.
In its ten years, the Berlin Festival has also drawn wide circles over the city map of Berlin and beyond. From Paaren im Glien to Poststadion in Berlin-Mitte, heading south to the historic Tempelhof Airport, before finally making the Arena Park in Treptow our home. Crisscrossing the city like a nomad – and of course, always on a bit of a search for our own identity.Although the 2015 edition of the Berlin Festival gave us the feeling that we had found a new home in Arena Park and had, to a certain extent, ‘arrived’, we will be taking a creative break in 2016. Precisely because we were and are so convinced of our new direction, we want to take the necessary time to think through and consider all the details of the next edition of the Berlin Festival. After much deliberation, we have decided to sit this year out.
‘The last two editions – and especially 2015 – were the perfect Berlin Festival in our eyes, exactly as we had envisioned it from the outset. The festival has arrived, no doubt. But now it is up to us to expand on the concept as an integral part of the capital. And for that, we need a little more time than planned. We hope our festivalgoers understand this and look forward to the next edition’, says Stefan Lehmkuhl, the festival's Art Director since 2009. We will be announcing the exact date of the festival’s return in due time, as soon as our plans for the next Berlin Festival are more concrete.
