Jamerson followed in the footsteps of his father, the legendary Motown studio musician, as a bassist. In fact, much of his childhood was spent around Motown’s Studio A, where Jamerson, Sr. recorded many of the iconic bass lines we know him for. It wasn’t until his late teenage years that he realized his father’s work affected so many people.
”…When I was growing up I didn’t know I was around history-making people. I didn’t even know about my dad; I thought bass was played like that all the time. It was like a given,” he told us in a 2013 interview. “Then I came to find out that dad was changing the whole course of music. He was just my dad. [It was] just like someone that goes to work at a factory. That’s his job and that’s what he does. I liked what he was doing because during the Christmas time, I got interested in music. I didn’t know if I was going to be a scientist or a musician. It turned out musician. So there it was: same name, same instrument. [laughs] I know that he was happy before he left here because his son was making noise.”
Jamerson, Jr. recorded his first song with Motown when he was around 14. He was in the infamous “Snakepit” studio when his father left the room during a session for Smokey Robinson. Fellow session musicians Earl VanDyke and Robert White convinced him to pick up the bass and play for “Flower Girl.” “Normally I wouldn’t do it,” he said, “but I figured I was comfortable enough because I started learning how to play the bass at night. So that was the first thing.”
Soon after, gigs started to roll in. The Temptations picked him up for a stint, then he was doing demo work and a few tours. He branched out from Motown to work with a variety of artists he described as “Rock to Bach,” including Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, the Jackson Family, Luciano Pavarotti, and many more. He had a his own hit record in 1978 with the band Chanson with David Williams.
In the past few years Jamerson had been paying homage to his father and his work in Motown tribute shows, including the Standing in the Shadows of Motown, Live! tour.

De Argentijnse saxofonist Leandro "Gato" Barbieri is gisteren overleden in New York, zo meldt zijn vrouw Laura. Hij verwierf wereldwijde bekendheid door de muziek die hij maakte voor de film "Last Tango in Paris", waarvoor hij een Grammy kreeg.

Getatchew passed away today. At the age of 81 and after a musical career of 68 years. He was a truely unique saxophone player. Born in the countryside of Ethiopia, he heard the saxophone on the radio at the age of 13 and went to Addis Abeba straight away. He wanted to play saxophone! And soon after that he got himself into the Municipality Band. Later he played in the Haile Selassie Orchestra's, the National Theatre Orchestra and more.
Since 2004 he played regularly with The Ex. It was his choice after hearing us at one of our festivals. He recognized something in our music which reminded him of the early groups he was in, like the Fetan Band (Speed Band). He loved playing with us and for us it was also an incredible experience. He was always totally himself, full-on intense and dedicated. We played more than 100 concerts and made two beautiful albums together.
The last few years, his health was not very good. He couldn't really go on tour anymore. As a kind of farewell concert for his fans, we organized a big event in the National Theatre in Addis Abeba. He got lots of attention and respect that night: 1500 people in the audience, three TV stations and a legendary concert. Getatchew was playing while sitting on a chair, but his playing was stronger than ever.
His whole life was music. With his unique sound and approach he leaves behind an eternal inspiration!
We will miss him.

Merle Haggard has died after a series of recent health struggles. The legendary singer passed away on April 6, 2016, which was also his 79th birthday.
Haggard canceled tour dates in December of 2015 after he checked into a hospital and learned he had double pneumonia. In an interview later with Willie’s Roadhouse on Sirius XM, he said he was “nearly dead” when he was hospitalized for two weeks. He canceled shows scheduled for Jan. 30 and 31 after his double pneumonia returned. At the end of March, he announced he was cancelling all of his scheduled shows for April on doctor’s orders.
According to Country Aircheck, Haggard had been in hospice care recently.
The country icon was born Merle Ronald Haggard in 1937 just outside of Bakersfield, Calif., a town that he would help make famous with his revolutionary sound. His family struggled financially throughout his childhood, living in an old converted boxcar after their home burned down. After Haggard’s father died when he was 9, he turned rebellious, hopping a freight train to Fresno and getting picked up by the authorities when he was just 10, according to his official biography. He was in and out of reform schools and deemed “incorrigible,” and ended up in and out of jail as a young adult, culminating in a stretch in prison when he was 20 years old.
Haggard began to take music seriously while in prison at San Quentin, where he was on hand for the Johnny Cash performance that was captured for the iconic live album At San Quentin.
He began to make a name for himself in the club scene around Bakersfield after his release, developing a hard-charging approach to country music that prominently featured twangy electric guitars. He released his first single, a cover of Wynn Stewart’s “Sing a Sad Song,” in 1964, but it was Haggard’s own compositions that launched him as one of the most important and influential country hitmakers of his generation. He released a long string of deeply personal songs including “The Bottle Let Me Down,” “Branded Man,” “Sing Me Back Home,” “Mama Tried” and many more, developing a reputation as one of the most serious, hard-hitting artists in the genre.
Haggard maintained that successful streak through the 1970s and into the 1980s, scoring more hits including “If We Make It Through December,” “Ramblin’ Fever,” “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink” and “That’s the Way Love Goes.” He stayed active in his later years, touring regularly and releasing a new album, Django & Jimmie, with Willie Nelson in 2015, debuting at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Country Albums chart.
The legend’s personal life and health were frequently less stable than his career. He was married and divorced four times before marrying his fifth wife, Theresa Ann Lane, in 1993. He underwent angioplasty in 1995 to unblock clogged arteries, and in 2008 Haggard had part of his lung removed after he was diagnosed with non-small-cell lung cancer. He returned to the stage just months after that surgery, and remained active in performing until right before the end of his life.
Haggard was honored as BMI Icon in 1996, and recognized at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2010. He won a slew of ACM, CMA and Grammy awards, and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1977. Haggard was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994.

Longtime David Bowie drummer Dennis Davis has died after a battle with cancer. Bowie producer Tony Visconti confirmed the drummer's death on Facebook.
Davis first linked up with Bowie during the recording of 1975's Young Americans and continued to work with the legendary musician on the road and in the studio. He played on all three of Bowie's famed Berlin records (Low, "Heroes" and Lodger), as well as Iggy Pop's The Idiot, which Bowie produced during the same period.
In an interview with Uncut magazine in 1999, Bowie spoke about Davis' playing on those records, calling him "a powerfully emotive drummer… The tempo not only 'moved' but also was expressed in more than 'human' fashion."
Born and raised in Manhattan, Davis learned to drum under the tutelage of jazz greats Max Roach and Elvin Jones. He began playing with the Clark Terry Big Band in 1967, but was called to serve in Vietnam, where he was wounded during a tour but was able to hone his skills in the U.S. Navy's Drum and Bugle Corps.
Along with playing for Bowie after his service, Davis racked up credits with Roy Ayers, George Benson, Ronnie Foster and Stevie Wonder. In recent years, per his website, Davis had been piecing together his first solo album, The Groovemaster, though it had yet to be released before his death.
Visconti remembered Davis on Facebook as "one of the most creative drummers I have ever worked with … He was a disciplined jazz drummer who tore into Rock with a Jazz sensibility. Listen to the drum breaks on "Black Out" from the "Heroes" album. He had a conga drum as part of his setup and he made it sound like two musicians were playing drums and congas.
"By Scary Monsters he was playing parts that were unthinkable but they fit in so perfectly. His sense of humor was wonderful. As an ex-member of the US Air Force he told us stories of seeing a crashed UFO first hand by accidentally walking through an unauthorized hanger. There will never be another drummer, human being and friend like Dennis, a magical man."

De koningscobra beet direct daarna in haar dijbeen. Ze dacht dat het dier onschadelijk was gemaakt, maar dat bleek niet zo te zijn. Ze zong nog drie kwartier door tot ze overleed op het podium.
Een slangentemmer bood de 29-jarige zangeres direct na de beet antigif aan, maar dat weigerde ze. Hij haalde de levensgevaarlijke slang weg, terwijl zij haar show voortzette en het gif zich in haar lichaam kon verspreiden. Ze begon over te geven en zakte na 45 minuten in elkaar. Pogingen om haar nog te redden waren tevergeefs.

De koningscobra beet direct daarna in haar dijbeen. Ze dacht dat het dier onschadelijk was gemaakt, maar dat bleek niet zo te zijn. Ze zong nog drie kwartier door tot ze overleed op het podium.
Een slangentemmer bood de 29-jarige zangeres direct na de beet antigif aan, maar dat weigerde ze. Hij haalde de levensgevaarlijke slang weg, terwijl zij haar show voortzette en het gif zich in haar lichaam kon verspreiden. Ze begon over te geven en zakte na 45 minuten in elkaar. Pogingen om haar nog te redden waren tevergeefs.
Koningscobra’s behoren tot de dodelijkste dieren ter wereld. Één beet kan een olifant doden en bevat voldoende gif om twintig mensen te vermoorden. De zangeres werkte wel vaker met de dieren en ging er op dubieuze wijze mee om. In andere filmpjes van haar shows is te zien hoe ze de slangen schopt en weggooit.
