The 26-year-old Argentine announced Tuesday that following a thorough analysis with his coaches and medical team, he would delay his comeback from left wrist surgery.

“I’ve been practising well,” said del Potro, who will do intensive pre-season training to be fully prepared for the Australian swing.

“The recovery from my wrist surgery is slow and won’t let me be in a competitive level to face the best players in the world in the last two tournaments of the year. I prefer to be patient, prudent and prepare for next year. I don’t have pain anymore. I’ve been feeling better day by day.”

The former World No. 4 won the Sydney title to begin his 2014 campaign, and played in three more tournaments – compiling a 7-3 match record for the season – before undergoing surgery to repair damaged ligaments on 24 March at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

“Your constant support, good wishes and caring have been and will continue to be of the utmost importance along this journey,” he posted Tuesday for his fans on Facebook. “I am deeply thankful and I believe that during next year I’ll be able to repay you, doing what I do best.”

Del Potro also had surgery on his right wrist four years ago. He made a successful return, winning Comeback Player of the Year in the 2011 ATP World Tour Awards.

Blijft doodzonde dat Soderling en hij zo veel geblesseerd zijn. Zijn mannen met garantie voor spektakel, ook tegen de grote drie.

Italian tennis rocked by a new match fixing scandal

TENNIS – Revelations made by La Gazzetta Dello Sport send Italian tennis in shock. There are many players involved, but the two main targets of the investigation seem to be Daniele Bracciali and Potito Starace. The investigation is ongoing, but the public prosecutor has confirmed that the conversations are authentic.

The investigation by the public prosecutor’s office of Cremona (a town less than 100 km away from Milan) that started in 2011 on match fixing in football matches has progressed and the analysis of the computers owned by the people investigated have revealed more than 100 names of various sports who are involved in the inquiry. Among these names there are two tennis players, Daniele Bracciali and Potito Starace, who have allegedly thrown matches to order. The two players, who have played for Italy in the Davis Cup, also mention other players like Simone Bolelli, Andreas Seppi, Filippo Volandri, Giorgio Galimberti and Federico Liuzzi.

In a Skype chat of 2007 Bracciali and Bruni (a key member of the betting syndicate investigated) they discuss explicitly of fixing the result of the match at Newport between the Italian player and Scoville Jenkins. Bracciali isn’t convinced he can arrange the deal as he does not know Jenkins, but they discuss the cost of his match fixing. Jenkins won that match 6-1, 6-2.

Another match under scrutiny is the final of the 2011 Casablanca tournament between Starace and Andujar that was won by the Spaniard 6-1, 6-2. In a conversation recorded before the match, the owner of a betting agency, Massimo Erodiani, talks to a someone identified as Corradino about the Italian player. The owner of the agency aims that Starace has given a cheque to guarantee his bet and they also talk about Montanes doing the same the previous day in the semifinals earning 1.5 million euro.

In another chat Bracciali discusses approaching other players including Simone Bolelli, but that failed as Bolelli’s coach at the time, Claudio Pistolesi, would not agree. The investigation will proceed in the next months and other sports like basketball appear to be involved. At the moment there is nothing official from the prosecutor’s office apart from a confirmation that the conversations published by the newspapers are true. Asked if other non-Italian players are involved, Roberto Di Martino, the prosecutor leading the inquiry, said “I can’t rule that out, but I can’t say anything”.

Nikolaj Davydenko heeft zijn professionele loopbaan beëindigd. De 33-jarige tennisser uit Rusland zegt het fysiek niet meer aan te kunnen op topniveau actief te blijven.

De voormalig nummer drie van de wereld (november 2006) stond bekend om zijn snelle voetenwerk, gecombineerd met aanvallende groundstrokes vanaf de baseline. Hoogtepunt in zijn loopbaan was het winnen van de World Tour Finals in 2009 door Juan Martin del Potro in de eindstrijd te verslaan.

Nooit een grandslamfinale

Davydenko bereikte nooit de finale van een grandslamtoernooi, maar stond wel vier keer in de halve finales: op Roland Garros in 2005 en 2007 en op de US Open in 2006 en 2007. De Rus won in totaal 28 titels, waaronder drie masterstoernooien.

Dit jaar speelde Davydenko - inmiddels afgezakt naar de 244ste plaats op de wereldranglijst - zijn laatste wedstrijd in de eerste ronde op Roland Garros. Hij verloor toen in drie sets van Robin Haase.

Davydenko zat er aan te komen. Nooit meer hetzelfde na die blessure in begin 2010. Jammerste verlies (en Djokovic heeft het bont gemaakt met die smash in de RG finale) dat ik ooit gezien heb was die instorting toen hij Federer aan het vegen was op de AO, dat was zijn kans op een Grand Slam.

Wel mee eens. Stukken minder boeiend dan bijvoorbeeld de masters, grandslams en zelfs de 500-toernooien zijn vaak leuker.
