Merle Haggard ‘Proud to Be Alive’ After Health Scare
Merle Haggard had fans worried last week when he postponed several tour dates due to an 11-day hospital stay due to a battle with pneumonia. Even the singer admits that he’s “really lucky to be alive.”
“It could’ve gone in another direction had I messed around a little more,” he tells Rolling Stone. “I’m just hoping I’m fully able.”
The 78-year-old spent 11 days at California’s Eisenhower Medical Center, as well as additional time recovering in another facility.
“I was coughing all the time. I thought, ‘These damned old buildings have got something in them.’ I just didn’t recognize it as what it was,” he says. “I always felt better after I’d work because of the exercise that it gave to my lungs. When I play, I feel better when I come off.”
Haggard will return to the road Tuesday (Feb. 2) in California, just days after he canceled two tour dates over the weekend.
“I had a double case of pneumonia about the size of grapefruit on each side,” he shares. “I had a pain that went all the way around from my belly button all the way around to my back. I asked the doctor, ‘What was that pain?’ He said, ‘It was death.'”
Despite his sickness, Haggard remains busy and says he’s been doing a lot of writing, rehearsing and planning a new album with Willie Nelson. He adds that he’s “proud to be alive” and hopes that people realize this.
“I really sincerely thank everybody for the prayers. My wife is taking care of me. I’ve lost a lot of weight. I’m going to appear different onstage, I’m afraid,” he reveals. “But she’s fed me well and stayed on top of me like a great nurse. I have no idea how I could do it without my family. I have to give them all the thanks for it.”

Willie Nelson is okay at the moment, but after the incredible rash of high-profile passings of musical icons spanning many genres, generations, and international borders in 2016, every resource of the United States government is being deployed to make sure the country music legend stays safe and sound for now.
After the deaths of David Bowie, Glenn Frey of the Eagles, Keith Emerson, producer George Martin, close Willie Nelson friend and country music icon Merle Haggard earlier in April, and now iconic music legend Prince, all precautions are being taken to make sure Willie Nelson stays alive no matter what the costs or resources necessary. This is the reassuring news coming from the United States government.
After the announcement of Prince’s passing, a pre-designed action plan was immediately put in motion for this very scenario. The operation is a collaborative effort between the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Heath and Human Services. President Obama signed an executive order executing the plan, and unlocking federal emergency funds to allow the operation to move forward.
Willie Nelson, who was home at his ranch outside of Austin at the time, was rushed via helicopter to a secured, undisclosed location. Immediately upon arrival that the Nelson residence, a team of top military doctors began running a full health diagnostic screening on the 82-year-old, checking blood pressure, metabolism, breathing, other vital signs, while also running a battery of full spectrum blood tests looking for any known pathogens or ailments that might put the singer and songwriter in any danger.
Then after an initial detox and inoculation of Willie Nelson with electrolytes and mineral-rich IV fluids, he was safely secured in a hypebaric chamber fitted with a precautionary life support apparatus that was then fitted with 2-ton-rated shock absorbers. Willie was then spirited off via military air support to a secure location that is said to be able to withstand a 12.0 earthquake, Category 5 hurricanes or tornadoes, or global thermonuclear war.
“We are treating this as a Federal emergency, and anything that can be done to ensure the safety of Willie Nelson is being implemented,” says Secret Service undersecretary Ash Frankenfurter. “We are handling this as if the top heads of state in the United States government were in jeopardy, and their safety and security were needing to be guaranteed for the continuance of the government.”
Willie Nelson, who didn’t seem to understand what all the fuss was about but amicably complied with Obama’s executive order to secure his person in an abundance of caution, asked when he arrived at the undisclosed secure location, “Do y’all have any of the military-grade weed I’ve always heard about?”

Reports that rock and roll pioneer Little Richard is in extremely grave health have been percolating in the news, with website Digital Music News and The Mercury News reporting the singer is in poor health.
"A friend, a legend & some say the true King of Rock & Roll. Lil-Richard needs our love & understanding right now," Bootsy Collins wrote on Facebook on April 28th. "He is not in the best of health so I ask all the Funkateers to lift him up."
The reports are untrue, according to William Sobel, Little Richard's attorney of the past 30 years. "I just spoke to him today," Sobel tells Rolling Stone. "He said, 'You know, I want you to talk to [the press] because I'm really annoyed. This thing started on Facebook. Not only is my family not gathering around me because I'm ill, but I'm still singing. I don't perform like I used to, but I have my singing voice, I walk around, I had hip surgery a while ago but I'm healthy.'"
Little Richard hasn't performed in the past two years and has kept largely away from the spotlight, reportedly living in a penthouse suite at the Hilton in downtown Nashville. "He had hip surgery," says Sobel. "He's 83. I don't know how many 83-year-olds still get up and rock it out every week, but in light of the rumors, I wanted to tell you that he's vivacious and conversant about a ton of different things and he's still very active in a daily routine. I used to represent Prince and he just engaged me in all kinds of Prince conversations, calling him a 'creative genius.'"
