- The seismic activity decreases and the intrusion lose momentum and no eruption happens at this time. For every day this scenario becomes less likely. In the beginning most scientists stated that it was fifty/fifty that an eruption would happen. The chance of it not happening is now probably below ten percent chance.
- A small sized eruption at Bárðarbunga central volcano. This is now a very unlikely scenario since the pressure is decreasing inside the caldera.
- A large phreatic event in the caldera due to magma chamber collapse. This is an increasing risk as the roof of the magma chamber is currently lowering causing those large earthquakes noted in the caldera.
- A small scale fissure eruption like the 1996 Gjálp. The risk for this has significantly decreased as things have moved on.
- A medium sized prolonged rift episode like the Krafla Fires. This is currently the most likely scenario.
- A large rifting fissure eruption. As time goes by the risk for this increases, currently I think the risk is around 10 percent. So, I guess it is time we start talking about this in the open and what it might entail. I once again recommend reading my series about the Skaftár Fires.
If we look at the Kverkfjöll station named Gengissig (GSIG) we see 90mm of southwards motion combined with 180mm of eastwards motion.
If we now combine the west motion of DYNC with the east motion of GSIG we get a total rifting of 365mm in 8 days. That is an average of 45mm per day, or the equivalent motion of 14 years of normal Icelandic rifting done in only 8 days.

The following was presented at a meeting of the Advisory Board at 10 am today:
Intense seismicity continues. Over 700 events have been recorded since midnight.
Seismicity continues to migrate northward. Seismicity is now concentrated on the 10 km long tip of the dike extending 5 km beyond the edge of the Dyngjujökull glacier.
At 20:39 last night an earthquake of magnitude ~5 was observed beneath the Bárðarbunga caldera. Since then earthquakes in the caldera have been smaller.
The dike beneath Dyngjujökull is now thought to be close to 35 km long. Modelling of GPS data indicates that it contains about 300 million cubic meters of magma.
Additional stations for continuous GPS monitoring will be installed north of Vonarskarð and on Urðarháls within a few days.
There are no indications that the intensity of the activity declining. Currently, three scenarios are considered most likely:
- The migration of magma could stop, attended by a gradual reduction in seismic activity.
- The dike could reach the surface of the crust, starting an eruption. In this scenario, it is most likely that the eruption would be near the northern tip of the dike. This would most likely produce an effusive lava eruption with limited explosive, ash-producing activity.
- An alternate scenario would be the dike reaching the surface where a significant part, or all, of the fissure is beneath the glacier. This would most likely produce a flood in Jökulsá á Fjöllum and perhaps explosive, ash-producing activity.
Other scenarios cannot be excluded. For example, an eruption inside the Bárdarbunga caldera is possible but presently considered to be less likely.

12:00 Wetenschappers noemen een mogelijkheid, dat een eventuele uitbarsting buiten (noordelijk van) de gletsjer plaats kan vinden. Deze zal zich dan mogelijk openbaren als een spleeteruptie, met relatief weinig as en geen gletsjervloed.
Maar dit blijft één van de mogelijkheden. De tijd zal het leren.

Interessant allemaal! Ik dacht al toen ik in het vliegtuig zat naar Calgary (CAN) afgelopen zaterdag waarom we zo ver noordelijk van IJsland vlogen. Ik neem aan dat er nu geen commerciele vluchten meer in de buurt komen van de vulkaan. Ik heb nu half Groenland gezien ipv de kust van IJsland.

Ik vraag me af of er een verband is tussen de Ijslandse vulkanen en de zwaardere aardbevingen in USA, Chili & Peru.

Zou best kunnen als er een tectonische plaat op drift raakt. Het schijnt dat de meetstations op de Noord-Amerikaanse en Eurasische platen in slechts een week tijd bijna 40cm uit elkaar bewogen zijn, terwijl 2cm per jaar normaal is.quote:
