A study of more than 25,000 people under community corrections supervision suggests the use of psychedelic drugs like LSD can keep people out of prison.
The research is the first in 40 years to examine whether drugs like LSD and “magic” mushrooms can help reform criminals.
“Our results provide a notable exception to the robust positive link between substance use and criminal behavior,” the researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine wrote in their study, which was published in the January issue of the Journal of Psychopharmacology.

A treasure trove of fossils chiseled out of a canyon in Canada's Kootenay National Park rivals the famous Burgess Shale, the best record of early life on Earth, scientists say.
"Once we started to break fresh rock, we realized we had discovered something incredibly special," said Robert Gaines, a geologist at Pomona College in Pomona, Calif., and co-author of a new study announcing the find. "It was an extraordinary moment."
quote:Graphene's love affair with water: Water filters allow precise and fast sieving of salts and organic molecules
Graphene is hydrophobic -- it repels water -- but narrow capillaries made from graphene vigorously suck in water allowing its rapid permeation, if the water layer is only one atom thick -- that is, as thin as graphene itself.
This bizarre property has attracted intense academic and industrial interest with intent to develop new water filtration and desalination technologies.
One-atom-wide graphene capillaries can now be made easily and cheaply by piling layers of graphene oxide -- a derivative of graphene -- on top of each other. The resulting multilayer stacks (laminates) have a structure similar to nacre (mother of pearl), which makes them also mechanically strong.
Two years ago, University of Manchester researchers discovered that thin membranes made from such laminates were impermeable to all gases and vapours, except for water. This means that even helium, the hardest gas to block off, cannot pass through the membranes whereas water vapour went through with no resistance.
Now the same team led by Dr Rahul Nair and Prof Andre Geim has tested how good the graphene membranes are as filters for liquid water. The results appear in the latest issue (Feb 14, 2014) of Science.
quote:Ancient Fish was First to Have Two Nostrils, Leading the Way for Vertebrates with Faces
The evolution of an ancient fish offers insight into how vertebrates, including humans, came to have a face.
A team of European researchers have presented new fossil evidence on the origins of the face by using micron resolution X-ray imaging to show how a series of fossils documents the step-by-step evolution of the face during the evolutionary transition from jawless to jawed vertebrates.
The fish at the center of the research is a 410 million-year-old armored fish called Romundina. For scientists trying to better understand how vertebrates came to evolve a face, Romundina plays an important role because of its evolutionary position as a transitional species.
Today, most vertebrates are jawed; the only jawless vertebrates are hagfishes and lampreys. More than 50,000 species, including humans, are considered jawed vertebrates. But jawed vertebrates evolved from their jawless counterparts, which the researchers likened to a process that effectively turned the face inside out.
quote:Dogs' brain scans reveal vocal responses
Devoted dog owners often claim that their pets understand them. A new study suggests they could be right.
By placing dogs in an MRI scanner, researchers from Hungary found that the canine brain reacts to voices in the same way that the human brain does.
Emotionally charged sounds, such as crying or laughter, also prompted similar responses, perhaps explaining why dogs are attuned to human emotions
