Vorige twee generaties was veel heftiger. Ik zal eens het eerste Xbox-topic zoekenquote:

quote:To understand why the Xbox won't fail, you need to understand how
microsoft work. You need to know where they intend to go from here.
You need to see where the xbox strategy fits into microsoft's big
picture.
Microsoft have decided where the big money is going to come from in
the near future... their focus isn't going to be on direct product
revenue. What microsoft are trying to do is become an essential part
of every significant media "delivery" chain.... so, for example, if
you want to watch a movie, listen to music, do stuff on the net, play
a videogame, then microsoft want you to do it using their
technology.... so that the people who are delivering this content to
you... the movie creators, the music industry, the games company, the
internet site... all end up paying a miniscule licensing fee to
microsoft.
For example, take the internet. A few years ago, if you were to
suggest that internet explorer would become the dominant web browser
over netscape, you'd be laughed out of town. But guess what? Microsoft
played every sneaky trick in the book, and spent a lot of time,
effort, and CASH to produce a "free" browser, which is now pretty much
the defacto standard amongst the net-using masses. Five years from
now, most people won't even know that Netscape existed, but netscape
used to be the "Sony" of the web browser game.
So why did microsoft do this? Do you really think it was for
altruistic reasons? That developing "free" browser software is
something they can do for cheap? ....No. The reason they did this is
it's given them a major stake in how the web works. Over the next
couple of years, a behind-the-scenes microsoft technology called
".net" is going to become the underpinning force of web-based
e-commerce - microsoft are now in a position to push this on people,
'cos they basically control the browers (the "passport" that XP forces
upon you is the first phase of .net implementation).... and the
ineveitable consequence will be microsoft taking a slice of any
e-commerce that passes through it's technology... that was the whole
underlying motive. At the time it seemed like madness. Almost a decade
later, they'll reap the rewards.
Another example... microsoft's "media player"... another attractive
"free" piece of software from microsoft, that's been around for ages,
gradually gaining momentum and chipping away at the userbase of winamp
etc. Again, microsoft have spent shedloads of cash on giving people
something that seems like a "free" gift... (the infrastructure behind
all those streaming services that microsoft use to pimp the media
player doesn't come cheap!!) ...but the real motive behind this is to
push the competition out of the market, and get microsoft's proprietry
digital rights management scheme to be the defacto standard on your
desktop... thus giving them a major licensing stake in the delivery of
desktop music / movies whatever. Again, they're throwing heaps of
money into establishing a market share. It remains to be seen if it'll
pay off, but they're obviously in there for the the full ride.
So, although I've gone off on a wide tangent here, what I'm trying to
say is that microsoft have set a precedent of throwing stupid amounts
of money at key areas of media distribution that they want a stake
in. It doesn't matter how poorly they seem to tackle the job at
first... it doesn't matter how much cash they lose... once they've
identified a media stream that they want to be part of, they just keep
spending more and more money, and slowly chipping away, and eventually
(for better or worse) they seem get somewhere near where they want to
be.
Returning to the xbox ...what we see here is microsoft's first move
on the videogame market. To make money in the videogame market, you
need to control the dominent platform... and that is what microsoft
aspires to do. (or, if not the "dominent" platform, then at least a
major player). It doesn't matter if sales initial sales aren't up to
snuff... microsoft will just keep throwing money at it until xbox (or
it's sucessor) is where they want it to be - and believe me, they will
throw a LOT of money at it before retreating from the videogame sector
- it's just TOO big a slice of the media-licensing pie for them to
ignore (remember, more money gets spent on games than movies!), and
microsoft can afford to risk (literally) billions of dollars getting
where they want to be.
Making assumptions that microsoft have come into this game with
anything shorter than a 5 year plan is extremely naive. Xbox will
survive in the medium term irrespective of sales figures. Try reading
Bill Gate's book "The Road Ahead" if you have any doubts about how
central this whole vison is to microsoft - then you'll understand that
the console "battle" isn't a war that microsoft will conceed any time
soon.

Geloof me; er is niets ingetrokken.

Royal sadness all around imo.

bah. Zwaar teleurgesteld.
