UKIP has its second elected MP at Westminster after Mark Reckless won the Rochester and Strood by-election.

Mr Reckless took 16,867 votes, 2,920 more than Conservative Kelly Tolhurst's 13,947, with Labour's Naushabah Khan on 6,713 - ahead of the Green Party.

The Lib Dems came fifth with their lowest vote total in a by-election.

Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown is expected to confirm he is standing down as an MP at a meeting in his Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath constituency tonight.

According to Sky News sources, the 63-year-old will tell a Labour Party audience that he intends to step down from Westminster at the General Election in May.

He is expected to shift his focus to charity work and his role as a UN special envoy for global education. Mr Brown was first elected to Parliament in 1983.

He was Chancellor from 1997 to 2007 before taking over from Tony Blair as Prime Minister between 2007 and 2010.

His successor, David Cameron, was among the first to pay tribute. "Gordon has given a huge amount in terms of public service and his contribution in government and Parliament," he said.

"I'm sure he'll go on contributing to public life even after he has left the House of Commons."

Mr Brown played a significant role in saving the Union when Scotland voted on independence in September.

His late intervention, setting out a "vow" on greater powers for the Scottish parliament, was a key factor in reducing the Yes vote.

But in his political obituary, he will find the chapters on his tenure in Downing Street less flattering.

As Prime Minister he presided over the 2007-08 recession and the bailouts of the banks that cost the taxpayer billions of pounds.

Nick Clegg Is Dangerously Close To Losing His Seat

Nick Clegg perilously close to losing his parliamentary seat as a new poll indicates that he enjoys a poll lead of just 3% points among voters in his Sheffield Hallam constituency.

In response to a survey by Tory pollster Lord Ashcroft, just 31% of voters said they would back the Liberal Democrat leader at the next election, with 28% saying they would vote for Labour. Such a finding is potentially dangerous for Clegg as it is within the margin of error.

Labour's parliamentary candidate Oliver Coppard told HuffPostUK that the poll "won't come as a surprise to anyone who's actually spent any time speaking to people in Sheffield Hallam".

He added: "It's obviously a two horse race here now and has been ever since Nick Clegg betrayed so many of the people who voted for him in 2010. The momentum is only going one way.

"No one here will forget his decisions on tuition fees, Forgemasters or the huge cuts he's inflicted on Sheffield. It's obvious that Nick Clegg's priority is keeping the Lib Dems in government with the Tories, not what's best for the people who live here in Hallam."

Meanwhile, the same polling indicates that Nigel Farage, Clegg's former EU debate rival, is in for a struggle to win his intended seat of Thanet South.

The poll for Clegg's Sheffield Hallam constituency suggestshe still enjoys a personal majority, but only a slight one, as when thinking nationally, more voters back Labour (28%) than would back the Liberal Democrats.

Voters in Clegg's own backyard also issued a withering verdict about his suitability to lead Britain, with only 11% saying he would make the best prime minister, just narrowly ahead of Ukip leader Nigel Farage at 9%.

The findings will be deeply unwelcome for Clegg in his bid to survive next year's general election, as other polls have shed light on the Liberal Democrats' nationwide plunge in popularity.

A previous poll by Lord Ashcroft found that the Greens have overtaken the Lib Dems for the first time in a decade, placing them at 8%, just ahead of Clegg's party at 7%.

The data suggests an astonishing number of young people, 28% of 18-24 year olds, are planning to vote Green, though the poll only surveyed around 1,000 people.

Another poll, by the PR agency Edelman, found that very few voters know what the Liberal Democrats' main policies are.

No more than one in four of those surveyed were able to link the Lib Dems' key policies with the party. However, those polled could link the Tories' policies with the party itself.

Despite the onslaught of poor polling, Lord Ashcroft said he would be "amazed" if Clegg ended up losing his seat, adding: "Remember he won 53% of the vote in Hallam at the height of Cleggmania."

The Tory peer's polling also has sobering findings for Nigel Farage, who is hoping to win the Kent seat of Thanet South next year.

The Conservatives and their candidate Craig MacKinlay are five points ahead of Ukip in Thanet South, with Farage also worse rated as a party leader than David Cameron.

De Schotse oud-premier Alex Salmond, die aftrad als premier en als leider van zijn Scottish National Party na het referendum over de onafhankelijkheid van Schotland, heeft, zoals verwacht, zijn zinnen gezet op een zetel in het Britse parlement bij de verkiezingen van mei volgend jaar. Dat heeft hij zondag aangekondigd.
"Ik kan u vandaag zeggen dat ik kandidaat ben om de SNP te vertegenwoordigen in de kieskring Gordon", zei Salmond zondag in Ellon, een stad in die kieskring in het oosten van het land. Als de SNP erin slaagt een groot aantal zetels te veroveren in Westminster, dan zijn er "perspectieven op werkelijke macht voor Schotland", aldus Salmond. Hij drukte de hoop uit vanuit Londen "te verzekeren dat Schotland verkrijgt wat het beloofd is".

Zijn vroegere nummer 2, Nicola Sturgeon, is hem opgevolgd aan het hoofd van zowel de partij als de Schotse regering. De vroegere partijleider trad af omdat bij het referendum van september 2014 een meerderheid van de Schotten tegen de onafhankelijkheid stemde.

Momenteel is de SNP goed voor 6 van de 59 zetels voor Schotland in het Britse Lagerhuis, op een totaal van 650 parlementairen. Salmond hoopt zeker 25 zetels binnen te halen.

Mr Miliband said Ms Brothers, who lost her sight to glaucoma as a child, was a "courageous campaigner".

She is thought to be the first openly transgender person to run for Westminster from a major party.

Ze werd drie maanden geleden tijdens het partijcongres met veel bombarie aangekondigd als de nieuwe sterke vrouw van de UKIP. Natasha Bolter was precies wat de partij van Nigel Farage nodig had: een jonge vrouw van Aziatische komaf die werkte in een Oostlondense staatsschool en de Labour Partij teleurgesteld vaarwel had gezegd. Knap en welbespraakt bovendien, deze Oxford-alumnus. Na twaalf wittebroodsweken is ze met evenveel bombarie weer vertrokken, klagend over seksistische intimidatie door de inmiddels geschorste partijsecretaris Roger Bird.

Bird was degene die haar op dat genoemde congres trots had ingeleid, grappend dat hij nu niet meer de enige is binnen de partijtop die op Oxford heeft gestudeerd. Kort daarna nam hij haar mee naar de Oxford en Cambridge Club in Londen, waar hij haar zou toetsen als kandidaat voor een zetel. Volgens Bird was dit het begin van een relatie die tot begin december zou duren, en om dat te bewijzen toonde hij lieve sms'jes van Bolter. Bolter zei dat er geen verhouding was, maar dat zij wel met hem moest aanpappen om vooruit te komen binnen de partij. Ze voelde zich een 'seksobject'.

De geloofwaardigheid van Bolter (meisjesnaam: Ahmed) heeft inmiddels een deuk opgelopen nu de universiteit van Oxford heeft verklaard dat deze politica nooit heeft gestudeerd op Wadham College, haar vermeende alma mater. Bovendien blijkt ze geen onderwijzer te zijn maar een klassenassistent en was ze slechts een blauwe maandag lid van de Labour Partij. Zelfs over haar leeftijd zijn nu twijfels gerezen. Ze heeft verklaard 35 te zijn maar volgens documenten is ze vier jaar ouder, zo meldt The Daily Telegraph. Een en ander doet denken aan episodes uit de LPF, ruim tien jaar geleden.

Campagneleider trekt zich terug
Bird is niet de enige coryfee in de problemen. Woensdag werd bekend dat Neil Hamilton, de campagneleider, zich heeft teruggetrokken als kandidaat voor het kansrijke kiesdistrict Basildon, waar ook Bolter een oogje op had laten vallen. De voormalige Conservatief had gerommeld met onkosten.

Hamilton had gehoopt op een terugkeer naar het Lagerhuis waar hij in 1997 met pek en veren was weggestuurd. Hij had indertijd geld gevraagd voor het stellen van kamervragen. Zijn zetel ging naar de BBC-correspondent Martin Bell, die campagne voerde in een symbolisch wit pak.

Partijleider Farage blijft evenzeer in de schijnwerpers staan. Vorige week roeide hij tegen de stroom van de publieke opinie in door te beweren dat luxehotel Claridge's een borstvoedende moeder terecht had verzocht haar borst met een servet te bedekken. Enkele dagen later haalde hij het nieuws door, na zich uren lang te hebben zitten opvreten in een file, te beweren dat de drukte op de autowegen (mede) het gevolg is van de immigratie. Ook morgen zal Farage waarschijnlijk met zijn kop in de krant staan, want vanavond treedt hij samen met Russell Brand op in BBC's Question Time.

SNP PLOT PACT TO STOP TORIES

Scottish Nationalists last night signed a provocative electoral pact with the Greens and Welsh Nationalists that paves the way for a deal putting Ed Miliband in power in the event of another hung Parliament.

Scotland's First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, on course to seize dozens of Labour seats at next year's general election, came to Westminster to forge a 'progressive' alliance against the Tories.

Fears are growing that the election could produce an effective dead heat between the main parties – with only a 'rainbow coalition' of three or more parties able to govern.

The SNP has indicated that in such circumstances, it would not prop up a Conservative-led government – but could offer support to Labour in return for a series of concessions.

Miss Sturgeon also paid a visit to Downing Street for her first meeting with David Cameron since she became First Minister.

The Prime Minister confirmed that youngsters aged 16 and 17 will be able to vote in the next Holyrood election. He said he would devolve the power to decide the franchise in time for the 2016 poll.
