http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/99794quote:Sam Bird led the way in an eventful Formula Renault 3.5 free practice session around the streets of Monaco.
The Briton, who took pole position in the Principality in GP2 last year, had a couple of stints at the top of the times as the session went into its closing stages.
On both occasions ISR driver Bird deposed Alexander Rossi from top spot, and the Arden Caterham driver was unable to respond after he crashed at Casino Square towards the end of the session.
A late effort from Marco Sorenson dropped Rossi to third, and the American was far from the only driver to hit trouble as the field tried to make the most of its only track time before qualifying on Saturday morning.
Sorenson's Lotus team-mate Richie Stanaway kicked things off with an early crash after clattering the kerbs at the Swimming Pool, while Lucas Foresti caused the first red flag when he spun at Rascasse and caused a traffic jam.
At the same time his DAMS team-mate Arthur Pic went off at Sainte Devote. The Frenchman had managed to keep his car out of the barriers, but he could not prevent it from stalling as he tried to rejoin the track.
Ferrari junior driver Jules Bianchi was in the wars again when his car developed a small fire with 20 minutes to go, and the Tech 1 driver had to complete a whole lap with a smoking car as it started just as he passed the pit entrance.
Carlos Huertas and Giovanni Venturini also hit trouble in the closing stages, and the session concluded under a red flag with Bird on top.
Despite his crash Rossi ended up third behind Sorenson. Kevin Korjus was fourth for Tech 1, ahead of a trio of rookies in Kevin Magnussen (Carlin), Nico Muller (Draco), and championship leader Robin Frijns (Fortec).
Red Bull-backed Lewis Williamson's tough start to the season continued, as the Scot's track time was halted when his Arden car got stuck in gear.

Giedo van der Garde had led the way for Caterham for much of the session, but spun and tapped the barriers at Rascasse with four minutes to go, ending his morning. The Dutchman was then pushed back to fourth.

Eurosport of motorstv ofzo?
Van der Garde en Melker beide sneller dan hun teamgenoten.quote:Johnny Cecotto took a shock maiden GP2 pole position in qualifying for the Monaco feature race.
The Addax driver had never previously qualified higher than fifth and is yet to finish on the podium in over two seasons of GP2.
But he proved his fastest time in morning practice was no fluke as he blasted to a 1m21.195s lap at the end of the second part of the split qualifying session.
Carlin's Max Chilton was fastest in the first group and will share the front row with Cecotto.
Caterham driver Giedo van der Garde had looked set to top group one as he dominated much of the session with a series of ever-faster laps. But his eventual 1m21.475s proved insufficient when Chilton came through with a 1m21.320s right at the end.
Chilton appeared secure in pole for a spell as the early group two times were some way off his benchmark. Then iSport's Marcus Ericsson produced a 1m21.249s lap to not only blitz his group two rivals, but depose Chilton from outright pole.
Red flags flew soon afterwards when Rodolfo Gonzalez (Caterham) crashed at the Swimming Pool entrance. There were just over two minutes left on the clocks at the restart, and that proved to be sufficient time for Cecotto to beat Ericsson by 0.149 seconds, pushing the Swede back to third.
Ericsson will share row two with van der Garde, while title contenders Luiz Razia (Arden) and Davide Valsecchi (DAMS) line up fifth and seventh, split by Ericsson's team-mate Jolyon Palmer.

quote:Sam Bird stormed to pole position in Formula Renault 3.5 qualifying in Monaco, and then crashed seconds later.
The ISR driver, running in the first group of the split qualifying session, which was expected to be slower due to track conditions, was a constant figure in the battle at the top of the times.
As the group A session reached its closing stages, veterans Bird and Jules Bianchi (Tech 1) made the fight for the quickest time an exclusive one between themselves. Bianchi was the first to set a time a long way clear of the rest of the field, but Bird then responded with two minutes remaining.
The Briton was on course to go faster again a lap later before having to back off for yellow flags at Rascasse, but he had time for one more lap and went one second faster than his former GP2 rival. Unaware of the size of his advantage, he continued to push and slid wide at Sainte Devote just seconds later, hitting the barrier with his left rear wheel.
Championship leader Robin Frijns (Fortec) got close to Bianchi to go third quickest in the group, with Tech 1's Kevin Korjus and Lotus's Marco Sorenson next up.
Bird then had to watch on as group B took to the track. The fight for top spot was a thriller, with Alexander Rossi and Kevin Magnussen leading the way throughout.
Quick times from Nico Muller (Draco) and Nick Yelloly (Comtec) got them in the hunt in the final seconds, but Muller's time at the top was brief as Magnussen went quickest, shortly before Rossi stole the place back at the death.
The Arden Caterham driver's time was 0.7 seconds adrift of Bird's best, meaning that the Briton took pole position, with the rest of group A lining up on the odd-numbered side of the grid.
Rossi will join him on the front row as group B takes the even-numbered positions, and behind them row two will be made up of Bianchi and Monaco rookie Magnussen (Carlin).
Frijns and Muller will share row three to make it three rookies in the top six, while Korjus and season-opener winner Yelloly are next up.
quote:McLaren’s latest young protégé, Dutchman Nyck de Vries, is to have his progress through the motorsport ranks supported by the team’s sponsor Lucozade.
Towards the end of last year McLaren entered into a strategic partnership with pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, whose products include the energy and sports drink Lucozade, with the logo of the brand subsequently appearing on the rear wing of this year’s MP4-27 and the firm developing a new drink specifically for the Woking squad’s race drivers and mechanics.
It has now been announced that 17-year-old de Vries, the reigning back-to-back world karting champion and who this year has taken the step up to Formula Renault 2.0, will also benefit from the partnership with the young Dutchman to “receive hydration expertise and sporting performance support from Lucozade” over the forthcoming years.
De Vries joined McLaren’s young driver programme in 2010 and is managed by Anthony Hamilton, whose son Lewis is the star graduate of the scheme having been supported by the F1 team from the age of 13. Amid a period of much speculation over what the 2008 world champion will decide to do for next season with his McLaren contract up at the end of the year, the team’s managing director Jonathan Neale said it was important the squad always looked to the next generation of stars to ensure its future driver line-ups remained as strong as the current one.
