Scientists and observers on the Canary Island of El Hierro are expecting further seismic activity and volcanic eruption over the next few hours, according to reports by experts.

After the two undewater volcanic eruptions earlier this week, the number of earthquakes that have recorded on the Island has been reduced significantly. But the concern continues because the data that predicts the occurrence of volcanic activity is not complete and likely to produce a new volcanic eruption. According to the Centro Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) the next eruption could occur on land. The question now is where the next activity will be and when

Professor Ramon Ortiz from the Center for Scientific Research (CSIC) commented yesterday that the only thing that can be said about the situation is that it will result in one of three things: the fissure which the magma will escape from will move south, to deeperwaters; that fissures will open further inland and twoards the coast of La Restinga; that new fissures could open up on the Island itself.

The count of earthquakes since the recent swarm began in July has now surpassed 10,000, and both the Canary Islands Volcano Institute and the National Geographic Institute (IGN) agree that the activity has not ended.

The Regional Government of the Canary Islands has mobilised a unit consisting of 16 troops (thirteen policemen, two officers and a deputy) and four vehicles (two trucks, one jeep and a patrol car) to facilitate the return of the residents of La Restinga, as well as being on hand to assist in any further evacuation if required.

Meanwhile, the telecommunications infrastructure on El Hierro has been improved in the event of further volcanic activity on or close to the island resulting in further evacuations being required.

Three stations have been implemented at Taibique, La Peña and San Andres in order to monitor the situation, with a further mobile unit being available. It has also installed a radio link from Afoba to La Gomera and a VSAT satellite link from Valverde.

Furthermore, Telefonica have responded to the request of the regional government and installed an Advanced Command Post at San Andres, along with 6 extra landlines, with an extra 2 lines for the sports center of Valverde, which is being prepared as a potential evacuation post, with a further extra line being provided for the Island's Hospital.

Whilst many residents of the evacuated village of la restinga have slowly begun to return to their properties, many have chosen to remain away from home due to fears of further volcanic activity. The authorities have not ruled out that a further evacuation may be necessary at just 7 or 8 hours notice.

Volcanologists from the CSIC (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas) have also concluded that if the activity continues for a further 2 weeks then the magma production coul result in a new island being formed just 2km off the coast of la Restinga. form a new small island 2 km out of the present El Hierro coast if the eruption continues like it does today.

Research tems have ruled out the possibility that any such 'island' would be connected to El Hierro.
