Never mind the Jubilee, here's a punk season ... the BBC is to celebrate the birth of a musical revolution with a series of programmes on radio and TV.

Some of the most prominent figures of the punk era are to take part in the programmes including John Lydon, Siouxsie Sioux and Mick Jones.

The season - to commemorate 35 years since three-chord wonders achieved national prominence - will be spearheaded by a BBC4 series Punk Britannia, which will look at the roots and the impact of the movement.

The three-part series includes contributions from Sex Pistols star Lydon - known in the late 1970s as Johnny Rotten - as well as The Clash's Jones and Sioux, who fronted Siouxsie And The Banshees.

Other major names from the era include Pete Shelley and his Buzzcocks bandmate Howard Devoto, who went on to front Magazine, The Fall's Mark E Smith, Generation X singer Billy Idol and Adam Ant.

The programmes look at the influence of mid-70s New York guitar acts and pub rock on the punk scene, how it went mainstream and its evolution and lasting influence.

Further programmes on BBC4 will include punk performances from the corporation's vaults including punk's main players as well as others from the scene including Dr Feelgood and The Au Pairs.

There will also be a documentary about punk poet John Cooper Clarke - known for tracks such as Evidently Chickentown, Health Fanatic and Beasley Street - featuring admirers and friends such as Steve Coogan and Arctic Monkey Alex Turner.

BBC Radio 6 Music will also be part of the celebration, with Lydon, Sioux, The Damned's Captain Sensible and Patti Smith each presenting their musical selections for hour long Playlist programmes in June.

Dr Feelgood dan weer wel. Dat pleit voor ze. En misschien is het dwepen met de grote namen alleen maar een reclametruukje (in een punkdocu, godbetert.). Maar toch.

Welke andere namen had je willen zien dan? Ben het op zich wel met je eens hoor. En ik wil eigenlijk wel eens een goede post-punk documentaire zien, want muzikaal was dat stukken interessanter dan punk zelf.

Narrated by Peter Capaldi, this opener of a three-part documentary series in BBC FOUR's celebrated 'Britannia' strand is scheduled to chime with the 35th anniversary of the Queen's Silver Jubilee and the arrival of punk as national and then international music culture. The film explores the road to punk in Britain, which begins in the early 70s with a young generation already conscious that they have 'missed the 60s party' and are stuck in a Britain heading for economic woes and dwindling opportunities. Meanwhile the music of the day - prog and super rock - seems to ask not for their interest and involvement, but only their awe and their money.

But before the punk generation finally arises to have its say during 1976 come a group of pub rockers, a generation of bands sandwiched between 60s hippies and mid-70s punks who will help pave the way towards the short, sharp shock of punk, only to be elbowed aside by the emergence of the Sex Pistols, the Clash et al.

An unlikely cast of characters set the scene for punk in early 70s Britain. Reacting against overblown super rock of the day and the glam their younger sisters like on Top of the Pops, pub rock set the template for punk. Small venues, fast retro rock n roll and bags of attitude typified bands like Dr Feelgood, Ducks Deluxe, Kilburn and the High Roads and Eddie and the Hotrods. These bands engendered a small London scene which is sometimes forgotten and helped define the Pistols, the Clash and the Damned, both positively and negatively.

Featuring copious unseen archive footage and interviews with John Lydon, Paul Weller, Mick Jones, Wilko Johnson, Nick Lowe, Adam Ant, Brian James and many more.
