Charles Drew
Charles Drew researched blood plasma and transfusions in New York City. It was during his work at Columbia University where he made his discoveries relating to the preservation of blood. By separating the liquid red blood cells from the near solid plasma and freezing the two separately, he found that blood could be preserved and reconstituted at a later date.
Charles Drew's system for the storing of blood plasma (blood bank) revolutionized the medical profession. Dr. Drew also established the American Red Cross blood bank, of which he was the first director, and he organized the world's first blood bank drive, nicknamed "Blood for Britain".

Otis Boykin
Boykin's most famous invention was likely a control unit for the artificial heart pacemaker. The device essentially uses electrical impulses to maintain a regular heartbeat.
One of his early inventions was an improved electrical resistor for computers, radios, televisions and an assortment of other electronic devices. Other notable inventions include a variable resistor used in guided missiles and small component thick-film resistors for computers.

Frederick McKinley Jones
Developed a highly successful automatic refrigeration system for long-haul carriers. Prior to Jones' invention, many people were primarily limited to eating food grown locally, because perishable goods could not be efficiently transported over longer distances.

Henry Sampson
African American inventor Henry Sampson is a brilliant and accomplished nuclear physicist who invented a Gamma-Electrical Cell. Henry Sampson's patent (US 3,591,860) can be viewed in its entirety online or in person at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. View Portions of the patent below.
The present invention is directed to a gamma-electric cell and to a method of manufacturing and a method of using the gamma-electric cell so as to produce a high voltage output when the gamma-electric cell is subjected to radiation. For example, the gamma-electric cell of the present invention may be subjected to radiation from a nuclear reactor and the output of the gamma-electric cell may be used as a measurement of the radiation of the nuclear reactor. Also, since the voltage output of the gamma-electric cell is relatively high compared with prior art cells, the cell itself may be used as a subsidiary source of power so as to increase the overall efficiency of the nuclear reactor system.
One particular embodiment of the invention uses the principles of the present invention so as to provide for the shield for the nuclear reactor wherein the shield itself converts the radiation and specifically the gamma rays in the radiation so as to produce a high output voltage signal which, as indicated above, may be a subsidiary source of power.

Granville T Woods
In 1888, Granville T Woods developed a system for overhead electric conducting lines for railroads, which aided in the development of the overhead railroad system found in cities such as Chicago, St. Louis, and New York City. In his early thirties, he became interested in thermal power and steam-driven engines. In 1889, he filed his first patent for an improved steam-boiler furnace. In 1892, a complete Electric Railway System was operated at Coney Island, NY. In 1887, he patented the Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph, which allowed communications between train stations from moving trains. Granville T Woods' invention made it possible for trains to communicate with the station and with other trains so they knew exactly where they were at all times.
Alexander Graham Bell's company purchased the rights to Granville T Woods' telegraphony patent enabling him to become a full-time inventor. Among his other top inventions were a steam boiler furnace and an automatic air brake used to slow or stop trains. Wood's electric car was powered by overhead wires. It was the third rail system to keep cars running on the right track.
At Odds With Thomas Edison
Success led to law suits filed by Thomas Edison who sued Woods claiming that he was the first inventor of the multiplex telegraph. Woods eventually won, but Edison didn't give up easily when he wanted something. Trying to win Granville Woods over, and his inventions, Edison offered Woods a prominent position in the engineering department of Edison Electric Light Company in New York. Woods declined preferring his independence.
