quote:5.4 Magnitude Earthquake shakes Indonesia's supervolcanic lake, Lake Toba
Lake Toba is an Indonesian supervolcano with a lake on the crater, the supervolcano is 100 kilometres long and 35 kilometres wide. The deepest point of the volcano is 1,666ft. The supervolcano is located on the island of Sumatra that also suffered the worst in the 2004 earthquake. The lake on the volcano is the largest in Indonesia and the largest volcanic lake in the world.
Today Lake Toba suffered a 5.4 Magnitude earthquake, the earthquake was larger than normal tremors on the volcano. In history the eruption of Toba had global consequences, killing thousands. Once Lake Toba erupted and it led to a volcanic winter worldwide. (That theory is still debated today).
"The Toba caldera is the only supervolcano in existence that can be described as Yellowstone's "bigger" sister."

quote:Scientists discover new ways to predict possible earthquakes
A recent research provides new means for replicating how earth ruptures develop and possibly enabling prediction of future earthquakes.esearchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, who have been examining what happens in a "model earthquake" in their laboratory, have discovered that basic assumptions about friction that have been accepted for hundreds of years are just wrong.
"The findings have a wide variety of implications for materials science and engineering and could help researchers understand how earthquakes occur and how severely they may develop along a fault line," said Jay Fineberg, the Max Born Professor of Natural Philosophy at the Racah Institute of Physics at the Hebrew University.
For centuries, physicists have thought that the amount of force needed to push an object in order to make it slide across a surface is determined by a number called the coefficient of friction, which is the ratio between the forces pushing sideways and pushing down (basically, how much the object weighs).
In carefully controlled lab experiments, Ben-David found that points along the contact surface could sustain up to five times as much sideways force as the coefficient of friction predicted, and the object still wouldn't budge.
Furthermore, the contacts don't all break at the same time. They, instead rupture one after another in a cadence that sets the rupture speed. These rapidly moving ruptures are close cousins of earthquakes, Fineberg said.
"An earthquake is the same system as in the Hebrew University experiments, just scaled up by factors of thousands. We can watch how these things unfold in the lab and measure all of the variables that might be actually relevant in a way that you could never observe under the earth," noted Fineberg.
This new understanding has the potential to provide unprecedented predictive power, estimating both the rupture mode and extent of a future earthquake.
The study has been published in an article in Science magazine

BRAWLEY, Calif. -- A rare earthquake phenomenon called a "quake swarm" has set off more than 100 earthquakes in southern California, including Wednesday's 4.4 magnitude quake that hit east of San Diego.
The 7.2 earthquake on Easter Sunday created dramatic waves in a pool in Brawley, a small town about 130 miles east of San Diego.
Maria Molina Rocha, who has lived in Brawley for 50 years, told 10News, "You could hear the rumble before you felt the earthquake."
More than 130 of them have been recorded in Brawley since Monday with the strongest one Wednesday's 4.4 quake.
"It's an exciting place to be right now," said geologist Dr. Pat Abbott. "You don't go an hour without feeling an earthquake."
Abbott called the phenomenon a "swarm" that doesn't happen anywhere else in the United States.
"Brawley is a very famous area for earthquakes, known worldwide for all its earthquakes," said Abbott.
Abbott said the last swarm took place in 1975, when Brawley shook for four days with 339 quakes, with the strongest being a 4.7.
Brawley is located between the Imperial Fault and the San Andreas Fault and is surrounded by hot magma rocks that heat the water and absorb a lot of the volatile energy.
"So we're getting a different style of earthquakes, numerous small earthquakes in warm rock rather than saving up a lot of energy and having a more violent rupture," said Abbott.
Abbott said he doesn't believe this swarm of quakes will have much affect on the two nearby faults.
