quote:Nieuwe enorme aswolk

Icelandic Meteorological Office and Institute of Earth Sciences, University of Iceland
Compiled by: Sigurlaug Hjaltadķttir, Björn Oddsson, Egill Axelsson, Matthew J. Roberts, Sigrún Hreinsdķttir, Halldķr Björnsson, Bergūķra S. Ūorbjarnardķttir.
Based on:
IMO seismic monitoring; IES-IMO GPS monitoring; IMO hydrological data; IMO weather radar measurements, MODIS satellite image; reports from sent through the IMO web site, information from the Icelandic Coast Guard flight yesterday.
Eruption plume:
Height (a.s.l.): The ash plume observed from commercial pilots between 0530h and 0800h: 30,000 ft/9km. ICG helicopter flight between 13h and 14h: sometimes under 20,000 ft (where there is a cloud bank) and oscillates up into the cloud bank (over 9 km). The height of the plume varies from 4-6 km according to the weather radar. Icelandair Cargo flight at
18:00 climbing towards east from Keflavík estimates height at 21- 22,000ft.
Heading: East-south-east over land, then to the south (assessed from AVHRR figure from NOAA at 0435h and 1154h).
Colour: A police officer from Hvolsvöllur, stationed at Rauđafell, observed the ash plume to be dark-gray. Observation from ICG: dark.
Tephra fallout: Considerable ashfall at Ūykkvabæjarklaustur in Álftaver (at a distance of 65-70 km), (everything has turned black). It has not been established whether the ash cloud south of Eyjafjallajökull is ashfall or ash that has already fallen and is being blown from the ground. Ashfall seems to start midway through Mũrdalssandur.
Lightning: No detections today over the eruption site.
Noises: No noise can be heard at Hvolsvöllur. No noise was heard at Seljavellir at noon. Noise heard at Heggstađanes (200 to the north).
Meltwater:
Discharge from Gígjökull decreases further and meltwater seems to be running from the eastern side of the glacier. This is different from tuesdays meltwater were water was running from the west side. Lava flow might be changing the direction of meltwater flow. Such changes should be taken seriously with regard to possible outbursts due to accumulation of meltwater. Discharge at the old Markarfljķts bridge is decreasing. It has now been verified that increase in electrical conducitvity in Jökulsá á Sķlheimasandi was caused by volcanic ash penetrating the glacier and the meltwater. This rules out the possibility of sulphur rich gas from magma entering the meltwater.
Conditions at eruption site:
The lava stream down Gígjökull has been stationary for the
last two days. Explosive activity has increased and the cinder cone
continues to build up in the northern most ice cauldron.
Seismic tremor:
Tremor levels continued to decrease yesterday and this morning. They are now similar to what they were in the first phase of the eruption, 14 to 17 April.
Earthquakes:
Earthquake activity is still being recorded. At least 10 earthquakes have been located since midnight. Most of the earthquakes are sourced beneath or south of the top crater in the eruptive conduit that has formed since 3 May. Most of the earthquakes are less than magnitude 2, the biggest M2.2. Three events have been recorded beneath the southeastern ice cap, depth uncertain.
GPS deformation:
Measurements from around Eyjafjallajökull show continued horizontal displacement. South of the eruption, stations THEY and SVBH have begun to drift southward, whereas FIM2, located east of the eruption, shows northward motion. No further northward motion has been observed at STE2, located to the north. Today's displacement pattern suggests deformation beneath the southeastern part of Eyjafjallajökull.
Other remarks:
Between 14 April and 5 May no signals (exept diurnal and long-period earth tides) are seen at strain-station Stķrķlfshvoll, ~35 km WNW of the eruption.
Overall assessment:
Explosive activity has increased and effusive part has decreased for the last two days. This results in a higher eruption column with increased tephra fallout. There are no signs that the eruption is about to end.

quote:Iceland's volcano sends more ash towards Europe
REYKJAVIK, Iceland — Iceland's Eyjafjoell volcano threatened European skies with a new ash cloud Friday raising the risk of more flight cancellations, officials said.
"Renewed and more intensive ash eruptions took place overnight and as a result, the area of potential higher ash contamination is forecast to extend from Iceland as far south as the western edge of the Iberian Peninsula during the day," Eurocontrol, the European intergovernmental air traffic control coordinator, said.
"Lava has stopped running from the crater and the eruption is now again an explosive eruption," Icelandic geologist Bjoern Oddson said.
"When there's more explosive activity, the ash does become finer and if the activity increases, it could possibly cause problems in Europe's airspace," he said, noting "the ash is spreading to the south-east" of Iceland.
Late Thursday, Icelandic meteorologists and geophysicists warned Eyjafjoell would emit a larger ash cloud after renewed activity, though Oddson said it had stabilised overnight.
"Right now, we're not seeing nearly as much ash fall as in the first few days of the eruption", which paralysed European flight traffic for a week from April 14, he said.
The ash, at sufficient concentrations, poses a hazard for plane engines.
According to the Brussels-based Eurocontrol, the areas where the volcanic ash concentration were likely to exceed engine tolerance levels were to the west of north-west Europe.
"Transatlantic flights are being re-routed south of the affected area which could cause delays to these flights."
The ash cloud was predicted to reach up to 35,000 feet (some 10,500 metres), far higher than in recent days and thus affecting more overflying planes.
The cloud caused Ireland to shut its airspace from 2300 GMT on Thursday to 1200 GMT Friday, the third closure in as many days.
The Faroe Islands, a Danish territory in the North Atlantic, also shut airspace from Thursday night until at least 0000 GMT Saturday.
The Portuguese air traffic agency NAV said ash was expected in the country's airspace north of Lisbon later Friday but would have a limited effect, causing only some rerouting.
Last month the Icelandic volcanic caused travel chaos, with airspaces closed over several European nations.
It was the biggest aerial shutdown in Europe since World War II, with more than 100,000 flights cancelled and eight million passengers affected. The airline industry said it lost some 2.5 billion euros.

Explosive activity seems to have decreased since yesterday. The ash plume does not rise as high into the air and is lighter in colour.
Steam rises from the lava tongue under Gígjökull, which is a sign that ice is melting in the tunnel, but to a much lesser degree than when the lava flow was at its peak. The cinder cone continues to build up around the eruption vent in the ice cauldron. The lava flow to the north has been stagnant for the past two days.

Based on:
IMO seismic monitoring; IES-IMO GPS monitoring; IMO hydrological data; IMO weather radar measurements, MERIS satellite image; reports from sent through the IMO web site, information from commercial flights.
Eruption plume:
Height (a.s.l.): 7 km according to IMO weather radar measurements at 1155h. Commercial flight heading towards Keflavík at 15:18h: 20,000- 25,000ft (7-7.6 km).
Heading: Southeast
Colour: Colour: Dark at the bottom, otherwise light gray.
Tephra fallout: Considerable in Vík ashfall began at 21h last night; ashfall reaches to ~55-60 km from eruption site, midway through Mũrdalssandur.
Lightning: No detections today over the eruption site.
Noises: No reports
Meltwater:
During the last 24 hours there have been no flash floods from Gígjökull measured at Markarfljķtsbrú. Electrical conductivity has been decreasing and daily fluctuations in discharge and water temperature have been observed. The electrical conductivity in Jökulsá á Sķlheimasandi which has been traced to ash contamination from the glacier is still quite high. An increase in discharge has been observed in rivers in the area around Mũrdals- and Eyjafjallajökull due to higher ambient temperature.
Conditions at eruption site:
The ash plume is lower now than yesterday. The wind affects the plume and ashfall is less. The cinder cone continues to build up around the eruption vent in the ice cauldron. The lava flow to the north has been stagnant past two days.
Seismic tremor:
Tremor levels are low, comparable to yesterday and the period on 14 - 17 April.
Earthquakes:
Earthquakes are still being recorded at 5-13 km depth, but fewer than yesterday.
GPS deformation:
Measurements from around Eyjafjallajökull indicate no major net discplaceaments, suggesting a stabilization of the surface deformation since yesterday.
Other remarks:
Grainsize analysis of samples taken of ash that fell on May 3rd at 64 km distance from the eruption site shows that about 5 % of the ash is smaller than 10 micron (aerosols). This is a considerable decrease of fine particles compared to ash from April 15th (25% aerosols) sampled at a similar distance. The grain size analysis was carried out by Nũsköpunarmiđstöđ Íslands.
Overall assessment:
Explosive activity seems to have decreased since yesterday. The ash plume does not rise as high into the air and is lighter in colour. Steam rises from the lava tongue under Gígjökull which is a sign that ice is melting in the tunnel, but to a much lesser degree than when the lava flow was at its peak.

Intensified eruptions occurred at Eyjafjallajokull volcano, Iceland on 6th May 2010. Ash emissions reached a height of 30,000 ft, and caused cancellation of flights in Scotland. Melt water discharge has decreased from Gígjökull glacier in the west. New melt water discharge is flowing towards the east, which indicates a change in direction of lava flows. This could crate more hazardous floods. Explosions are increasing at the summit, and a cinder cone is forming in the crater. Tremor is similar to that seen in the phase of the eruption from 14-17 April 2010. On 6th May, there were 10 earthquakes detected under the volcano. Most earthquakes are located beneath or south of the summit crater.

Heading: Southeast
Colour: Grey/light gray.
Tephra fallout: In Vík and nearest vicinity. Very small amount of fine, dark ash
detected on a white plate in Hvolsvöllur 06:00 this morning.
Lightning: No detections today over the eruption site.
Noises: No reports
Meltwater:
Similar to yesterday, daily fluctuations in discharge and temparature.
Conditions at eruption site:
The eruption is still in an explosive phase. The tephra and spatter cone continues to build up and is now reaching near the rim of the ice edge around the crater. The plume does'nt rise vertically from the crater, but bends SE-wards due to wind. Plume reaches higher after larger explosions. Thephra fallout near the crater is considerably less than was observed on May 6th. There is little lava flow down Gígjökull and the lava front has not changed for the last couple of days. Very little steam rises from the lava edge. A small lava tunnel was observed with an infrared camera near to the crater.
Seismic tremor:
Low, similar to yesterday and similar amplitude on all frequency bands.
Earthquakes:
Less earthquake activity, two events, Ml 1.2, detected at 9 and 12 km depth at around 11:00h and two of similar magnitude around 14:00.
GPS deformation:
No significant changes were observed at GPS stations around Eyjafjallajokull glacier.
Overall assessment:
The eruption is still in a strong explosive phase, but still less than it was late on May 5th and during May 6th. Little or no steam is observed at Gígjökull. Thephra fallout may be expected in the nearest vicinity of the volcano, but nothing in comparison to the first days of the eruption in April.

The Icelandic Met Office state that there are no signs that the eruption is about to end, with the situation with the volcanic eruption remaining dynamic.
Winds are expected to blow from a mainly northerly direction through Sunday and into Monday, with most of the ash cloud likely to stay over the Atlantic Ocean and close to western parts of the British Isles. As a result NATS continues to advise aircraft about airspace restrictions affecting transatlantic flights, allowing them to cross the Atlantic safely. The ash cloud has drifted across some parts of central and southern Europe, leading to disruption.
As the volcanic activity changes, the Met Office will continue to provide frequently updated information to NATS and CAA about the dispersion of the volcanic ash, in line with the new engine criteria set by the CAA and the aviation industry.
Any decisions on airspace closures are the responsibility of CAA and further information on the impacts of this increased activity should be sought from them.

10-05-2010

Eruption plume:
Height (a.s.l.): ~5 km / 17,000 ft but sometimes shoots up to 6 km / 20,000 ft.
Heading: Southeast. Low level winds are variable.
Colour: Grey / light gray.
Tephra fallout: Ashfall reported at Drangshlíđ and Skarđshlíđ almost continuously for the last 24 hours. The ash is rather coarse, estimated by the farmers to be ~2-3 mm.
Lightning: No lightning has been detected on instruments over the eruption site for the last week.
Noises: No reports.
Meltwater: Low water discharge at Gígjökull. Daily fluctuations in discharge and temparature are dominating the water flow at Markarfljķtsbrú. No flash floods have been detected.
Conditions at eruption site: There was no flight today, but observations from web cameras show similar activity to yesterday. The crater is getting higher. Lava flow is low and not visible on cameras. In the afternoon there was a slight increase in explosive activity, which resulted in a higher plume for a while.
Seismic tremor: Has been similar for the past 3 days, and similar amplitude on all frequency bands.
Earthquakes: A sequence of earthquakes started around 11:00h this morning. Some 40 earthquakes were located, mostly at depths of 18 – 20 km and magnitude range Ml 1 – Ml 2. As the background tremor is much lower now than last week, much smaller earthquakes are observed, partly counting for the number of earthquakes detected this morning.
GPS deformation: Horizontal displacement towards the center of Eyjafjallajökull volcano and subsidence. Some irregular movements are seen in the height of the station closest to the volcano.
Overall assessment: The earthquake sequence this morning indicates that magma is still flowing in from the mantle. Presently there are no indications that the eruption is about to end.

Posted on11 May 2010.
Keflavik International Airport and Reykjavik’s domestic airport both re-opened yesterday afternoon, and ash cloud forecasts show clear skies for the foreseeable future and no further closures predicted for the time being.
The same is true for affected airports in Scotland, Ireland and southern Europe.
Meanwhile RUV reports a series of earthquakes under and around Eyjafjallajokull which could signal changes to the volcanic eruption.
According to geophysicist Steinunn Jakobsdottir, the quakes could be a sign of a new vent about to open. The volcano already has three vents, but only the one on the northernmost edge is still erupting.
Ash fall in the area has been decreasing and is currently very fine but large rocks have replaced the ash production, apparently caused by the earthquakes. The rocks are being shot high up into the air and crashing down onto the glacier, making holes in the ice. The size and weight of the rocks means that they are a very localised problem and only fall very near to the volcano.
quote:Volcanic Activity in Iceland Comes in Waves
The activity in the volcano underneath the Eyjafjallajökull icecap in south Iceland fluctuates but there are no indications that the eruption is winding down. Yesterday a series of earthquakes were detected underneath the icecap which indicates that magma is still being thrust out of the mantle.

According to research conducted by the Icelandic Meteorological Office and the University of Iceland Institute of Earth Science, the volcanic cloud reaches a height of five kilometers above sea level on average, and sometimes extends up to six kilometers. Lava flow is minimal and the volcanic unrest stable, Morgunbladid reports.
Keflavík International Airport reopened yesterday after a three-day closure. Flights to and from the airport will be on schedule today as the airport currently lies outside the danger zone, according to ash distribution forecasts. However, passengers are asked to pay close attention to developments.
Although Icelandic airports can remain open today, the ash from Eyjafjallajökull is disrupting flights elsewhere in Europe. According to visir.is, seven airports in Spain are closed for the day.

quote:Iceland Volcano Update
1218 BST on Tuesday, 11 May 2010
Volcano
Latest information received from the Icelandic Meteorological Office indicates that the explosive activity from the Eyjafjallajökull volcano is continuing, with the ash plume reaching heights of up to around 18,000 ft. The Icelandic Met Office state that there are no signs that the eruption is about to end, with the volcanic eruption remaining dynamic.
Winds are expected to blow from a mainly north or north easterly direction over the next few days, with most of the ash cloud likely to stay over the Atlantic Ocean and close to western parts of the British Isles. As a result NATS continues to advise aircraft about airspace restrictions affecting transatlantic flights, allowing them to cross the Atlantic safely. Recent weather patterns mean that the ash cloud has drifted across some parts of central and southern Europe, leading to disruption.
As the volcanic activity changes, the Met Office will continue to provide frequently updated information to NATS and CAA about the dispersion of the volcanic ash, in line with the new engine criteria set by the CAA and the aviation industry.
Any decisions on airspace closures are the responsibility of CAA and further information on the impacts of this increased activity should be sought from them.

quote:Volcanic Ash Could Again Close Airspace in UK,
There is growing concern that volcanic ash from Iceland may once again close UK and German airspace periodically over the next few days.
According to an Icelandic Met Office assessment made Friday, the Eyjafjallajokull Volcano is sending ash up to a height of approximately 24,000 feet.
AccuWeather.com meteorologists have studied the projected winds at that level over the next few days. It appears the winds will be oriented such that ash still spewing from the volcano would likely be steered over the UK Sunday and perhaps the Netherlands, Germany and other parts of northern Europe Monday.
According to the Associated Press, representatives of both the British Department of Transportation and German air traffic control expressed concern Saturday that airspace closures could result if the volcano continues erupting at current levels.
People who will be traveling through airports across the UK and Germany over the next few days should check the status of their flights and be prepared for the possibility of delays or cancellations.
The ash is not expected to have a direct effect airspace across most of the rest of Europe through early next week.
The Eyjafjallajokull volcano first started erupting in mid-April and subsequently grounded flights across Europe for almost a week. There have been periodic delays and cancellations of flights since that first week following the initial eruption.

16-05-2010

◦Flights in Iceland are running to a nearly normal schedule.
◦The ash cloud has never been better seen from Reykjavik.
◦UK authorities warn of possible airport closures tomorrow. The ash cloud from the Eyjafjallajokull eruption is extremely active at the moment and has never been as visible from the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik, according to University of Iceland geophysicist, Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson. The ash is, however, not affecting domestic or international flights in and around Iceland as it has been doing over recent days.
All international and domestic flights have been running as normal today – with the exception of to and from the Westman Islands – and the situation is not predicted to change soon. Air Iceland has pencilled in a flight to the Westman Islands at 09.00 tomorrow morning; but that is subject to change.
Meanwhile, British airspace could close again from tomorrow morning until at least Tuesday due to the volcanic ash, according to Daily Telegraph sources in the Ministry of Transport.
According to the paper’s website, it is likely that airports in Scotland and the Souteast of England will close, along with Irish airports.
The British government has given the Met Office permission to make its five-day ash forecasts public online, replacing the 18-hour forecasts available until now.

quote:'Aswolken zullen decennialang blijven komen'

Vliegen boven Schiphol toch mogelijk
Rond 11.00 uur landden twee KLM-vluchten.

Other farmers from the region south of the eruption site are considering doing the same, Fréttabladid reports.
“It doesn’t appear as if we can let our sheep go outside in the near future and to keep ewes and their lambs inside for a long time creates problems such as sickness and death,” Magnússon told Stöd 2.

quote:Drie IJslandse vulkanen volgen
Lijk me volkomen logisch.
