Er is nog geen officieel besluit genomen om het luchtruim boven Nederland te sluiten in verband met een wolk vulkanische as die zich over Europa verspreidt. Dat heeft een woordvoerster van Eurocontrol donderdag laten weten.

Eerder had de organisatie, die belast is met de veiligheid van het Europese luchtverkeer, gezegd dat het vliegverkeer boven Nederland, België en Noord-Duitsland donderdagmiddag zou worden stilgelegd.

Volksgezondheid

Het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM) weet nog niet of de wolk met vulkanische as schadelijk is voor de volksgezondheid. Volgens een woordvoerder wordt daar op dit moment onderzoek naar gedaan.

LVNL

De Luchtverkeersleiding Nederland (LVNL) houdt er ernstig rekening mee dat het vliegverkeer van en naar de Nederlandse luchthavens donderdag in de loop van de dag moet worden stilgelegd.

Dat heeft een woordvoerster laten weten. Als de aswolk het Nederlandse luchtruim bereikt, en dat is wel de verwachting, is er volgens de zegsvrouw geen vliegverkeer meer mogelijk.

Ashcloud cancels European flights
Tens of thousands of airline passengers face travel chaos today after volcanic ash from an eruption in Iceland has forced three airports to shut and brought heavy disruption to others.

Airports in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow were shut this morning and five easyJet flights that were due to take off from Stansted were ground due to massive visibility problems.

At Gatwick, 106 flights were cancelled with heavy disruptions expected to follow later today. All flights from Manchester airport have been disrupted.

Newcastle and Belfast are also affected, according to reports, as is Birmingham airport.

A huge ash mushroom across major British flight paths threatens to turn thousands of families returning from Easter holiday into a nightmare.

Business travellers hoping to leave London from City Airport tonight also reported that British Airways had cancelled flights.

Airports have urged travellers to check with their relevent airlines to see whether flights have been effected.

“Following advice from the Met Office, the National Air Traffic Service (NATS) has introduced restrictions to UK airspace this morning as a result of volcanic ash drifting across the United Kingdom from Iceland,” a spokeswoman for Stansted Airport said.

“These measures currently affect Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports which are closed but may also affect other parts of the UK later today,” she said.

After bringing chaos to UK airports, the ash cloud is expected to spread into continental Europe overnight, wrecking holidaymakers’ chances of reaching many international destinations.

A spokesman from NATS said: “The Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre has issued a forecast that the ash cloud from the volcanic eruption in Iceland will track over Europe tonight.

“NATS is working with Eurocontrol and our colleagues in Europe’s other air navigation service providers to take the appropriate action to ensure safety in accordance with international aviation policy.”

The ash cloud is caused by the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which surged back into life on Tuesday after apparently showing signs of dying down.

It follows eruptions last month in a 1.2 mile wide strip on the flank of the volcano where there is no ice.

Honderden geëvacueerd na nieuwe uitbarsting
REYKJAVIK - Zeker zevenhonderd inwoners in het zuiden van IJsland zijn woensdagochtend geëvacueerd wegens een vulkaanuitbarsting en meerdere aardbevingen. De vulkaan ligt in het gebied van de gletsjer Eyjafjallajökull, zo liet een politiewoordvoerder weten.

Severe flooding expected in South Iceland

A new eruption is taking place under Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull glacier and flooding is expected. Journalists to the south of the glacier say they can already see the flood waters approaching.

Flights below 30,000 feet have been banned from the zones to the north and the east of the new eruption and residents south of the glacier have been evacuated.

Scientists are also monitoring the condition of drinking water in the Westman Islands, which comes from the glacier. No changes in quality have yet been recorded.

Risk of Phreatic Eruption in Iceland
Volcanologist Haraldur Sigurdsson said there is a risk of a phreatic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull glacier in south Iceland, which occurs when magma makes contact with water. The crater at the glacier’s summit is filled with ice which is starting to melt.

“There have been indications for two to three months that the main movement of magma is straight underneath the summit crater at a significant depth,” Sigurdsson told mbl.is.

He said the crater is quite large, approximately five kilometers in diameter. Now the ice inside it is starting to melt as magma is flowing underneath the ice. “When it melts its way through there is a risk of a phreatic eruption.”
