The Caretaker! Wat een plaat is dat On, iemand schreef ergens alsof je door een door oorlog getroffen gebied loopt en uit de kapotte huizen een platenspeler met jaren 40 muziek hoort. Ik vond dat wel een goeie beschrijving.

Wolfgang Voigt's recordings under the name Gas have gone down in folklore as one of the key ambient/techno/drone touchstones of the nineties, providing the Mille Plateaux imprint with some of its finest ever output, which in certain quarters (namely Boomkat HQ) is regarded as just about as good as it gets. First thing's first, it should be pointed out that 'Nah Und Fern' collects the four principal Gas albums, electing to miss out 1995's Modern EP and other scraps from short-form releases. This should be regarded as a good decision, because the consequent four-part cycle feels very much like its own, self-contained catalogue. The first of these constituents, the eponymous, debut Gas album somehow sounds more current than ever. You can hear the current generation of Kompakt artists striving for the sounds Voigt mapped out 12 years ago, that thunderous bass pulse destabilises the notion that this is ambient music in any passive sense, instead injecting a sense of pace and motion to a music that's otherwise difficult to interpret in any structural sense - and it's certainly far too richly layered and abstract to be filed under the banner of techno along with some of Voigt's other work. 1997's Zauberberg established the Gas language as we currently know it, based around an effulgent blend of samples, noises, treated recordings and clever filtering all locked in place by that stately bass drum pulse. It was this album that started making explicit links between forest imagery and the thicket of sound Voigt concocted, but as signposted by the surreal colour schemes of the album's original sleeve, this is a dream forest - a psychotropic... tropic, with hints towards nightmarish oppression intimated by the deep, dark dissonances that occasionally reach out from the torrent of sound. The last of these albums, 'Pop' takes this forest imagery to its natural conclusion, rendering an environment so verdant and teeming with life you can literally hear it dripping, in all its gooey fertility. Samples of flowing waters intermingle with dense air currents and synthetic landscapes, resulting in a more vivid picture of Voigt's hyper-real forests than perhaps ever before. Pop is probably Voigt's most accessible album, and the record that can most directly be attributed to establishing ground rules for the famed Kompakt Pop Ambient sound. A special mention should be given to 1999's Konigsforst, however. Of all the Gas releases this has to be the most enduring and resonant. Somewhere within that album's configuration of sounds lies a magical balance between neo-romantic orchestration and the more esoteric, electronic ambient elements Voigt brings to the table - and moreover, the individual tracks making up Konigsforst fit together into a single long-form narrative so beautifully, it represents an undeniably special musical voyage. Compiled together in this ineffably wonderful package, and 'lightly' remastered, the Gas catalogue - slightly abridged as it may be - stands as a singular and totemic body of work within the great canon of ambient music. As essential as essential gets.

Ah. Emergon was ook wel een ongelukkig voorbeeld eigenlijk, want die is veel dansbaarder dan wat Octex doorgaans laat horen. Ik vind het de ultieme muziek om op te fantaseren, veel ruimte voor eigen invulling.
Edit: Ik zag dat The Field je wel beviel, dat neigt ook al naar minimal techno. 'Chill' is een rekbaar en persoonlijk begrip, dus het is moeilijk om te zeggen wat hier wel en niet thuis hoort, vind ik.

Ik vind The Field inderdaad erg chill maar ook niet echt in dit genre passen. En ik ben wel met je eens dat er in het minimal topic veel over dansbare muziek wordt gepraat maar dat komt ook vooral omdat er veel DJs zitten die veel met de muziek bezig zijn. Maar goed, het maakt mij eigenlijk niet uit, het viel me alleen een beetje op dat er wel erg veel verschillende soorten muziek gepost worden, in mijn ogen verwatert dat het topic een beetje. Hitchell slowly but surely increases the pace and intensity of the tracks from the opener "Montego Bay" through to the shuddering, staggering "Intrusion Dub" before pulling back on the reins with the slinky, sexy "Seduction" and then alternates between the deadly intense and dead mellow on the album's back half before finally concluding with the sparkling ambient coda of "Under the Ocean."
Hitchell's solo work is far more rhythmically adventurous and danceable than most Echospace material. The delayed and doctored analog pulses (no sequencers here, thanks) are adorned with a smattering of congas and other percussion, as well as a standard deep bass drum stomp and Studio 1-inspired bass lines. Make no mistake—the album doesn't sound explicitly like King Tubby; it's more like his ghost is haunting your favorite Maurizio sides.
Beyond the phased and echoed chords and analog atmospherics, though, there is a palpable sense of spirituality present here that distinguishes The Seduction of Silence from most other dub techno, which has a tendency to be cold and metallic. There's a warm, celestial quality in the melodies here that looks skyward, and St. Hilaire's cuts provide the perfect bookends to the album; the dubbed-out "Angel Version" is track two, while the full vocal version "Little Angel" comes second to last. The lovestruck, inspirational lyrics and St. Hilaire's soothing tones go a long way toward lending a definitive voice to the album that travels beyond mere vocals into a deeper meaning that transcends the ten tracks.
Though individual highlights abound on The Seduction of Silence, the album works best when taken as a whole, an endorsement of Hitchell's vision for an expertly paced and executed album that raises the bar on the dub techno game to stratospheric levels. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better winter warmer than this; remember it with warm thoughts when winter returns later this year, when it's time for year-end polls.

Ik weet niet of je de nieuwe al gehoord hebt, maar ik ben er nog niet uit of ik RoS of Rigning beter vind. Dat RoS geniaal is staat buiten kijf, maar Rigning klinkt érg goed en geëvolueerd. Het minimalisme uit RoS gecombineerd met wat aspecten uit Will I Dream During the Process?
Het enige dat ik mis bij Rigning is een track van epische lengte. Zoals Snowflake 6.

And yet it is obvious that Juhls aspires to much more than just following in the footsteps of Pole and the clicks n cuts scene. One of the names dropped in relation to him has been Erik Satie, which suddenly makes a lot of sense when spinning the first track of his current full-length „Urlaub auf Balkonien“: „Sommerdellen“. Krill minima is op zich wel lekker, alleen ik kan zeer slecht over die knisperende en knarsende geluiden. Ik weet het, het wordt vaker gebruikt in ambient, alleen ik vind het eerder irritant dan mooi. Die nummers zonder die geluiden zijn trouwens wel erg mooi!
