With the case design 100% complete [1] and the factory mould in progress [2], we now have a real timeline to work with. The four main items on the list are as follows:
.
THE FIRST 105 BOARDS (IN PROGRESS)
These are the first mass production PCBs to come off the line. After thorough testing, they will go into the first shipped Pandoras. We are expecting to see these boards any day now. [3]
CASE MOULD CREATION (IN PROGRESS)
This is the factory injection mould that will be used to produce Pandora cases. It’s the last big step in preparing for mass production, and takes up to 45 days to make. This process began on July 21. [2] The factory will use some of the first 105 boards to fine tune the fit.
CE/FCC TESTING (TBA)
Separate tests are required for Europe (CE) and the USA (FCC). This is not expected to affect the delivery timeline.
MASS PRODUCTION, TESTING, SHIPPING (TBA)
Once the case mould is done and the first boards pass their tests, production of the entire first batch commences. Small numbers will be assembled and tested at first, with the production rate ramping up each week. These mini batches will be tested and shipped on the fly.
This is the last OpenPandora newsletter before we start shipping Pandora consoles to customers.
Yes, we have finally, after a lot of serious tweaking, decided the Pandora is ready to roll.
You will have already seen all the videos, the emulators, the various game ports, firefox, they are on the website if you have not.
Just before we get going, how about one more? The Pandora running a Dreamcast emulator:
Right, now, this email is about what happens next.
Well the Pandora is being made in Dallas, Texas, USA. We decided not to go down the usual 'Made in China' route.
It might cost a little more but we believe the level of service you will get from us will be far greater due to this.
For those of you who still want a Pandora from the first batch there is a small number (about 100) still available to
preorder, on a first come first served basis, at $330 each, if you want one email: openpandorasales@gmail.com.
These are limited to one per customer.
We are also able to offer a very limited number of consoles to web stores (less than 150), again on a first come basis.
There won't be another batch until 2010.
So, between now and then, what's going to happen?
Currently we have 105 test mass production Pandoras, as well as numerous full pre-production Pandora consoles.
A lot of these are with developers who are working on software, you will have seen a lot of it in the videos we have posted on youtube.
In October the factory will start to populate 4000 Pandora PCBs, this will be a slow process at first
which will become substantially faster after the initial 800.
As the PCBs are completed, they are tested then put in to cases, boxed up and shipped out to you.
After we ship the first 4000 units , and before the second batch, we will then be concentrating on software
development, looking after the current customers and, well, trying to make the Pandora the best open hand held ever made.
Also consider that there is still nothing like the Pandora on the market; digital dpad, dual analogue nubs, qwerty keyboard,
800*480 touch screen, over 10 hours of battery life and lots more, we think you will really like it.
So, you can finally sit back, be happy and join the fun on the forums at http://gp32x.com/board or our fancy new
website http://openpandora.org
Thanks,
Craig and the OpenPandora team.
PS if you got this email more than once I'm really sorry, new website teething problems!

Well, just some nice things you guys would like to know.
1. ALL parts (including the nubs) have arrived at the factory! For ALL 4000 Pandoras!
2. Chinese holidays are almost over, so the case should also be finished soon.
3. The Rev4 prototype Pandora is currently on the way to me so I can do the CE testing (gonna call the company today, I'll let you know when testing will take place)
4. Softwarewise, we're pulling all the patches we have together. The OS needs some more tweaking during the next months, but all the basic stuff does work and the image is pretty stable. I'll do more videos when I get the prototype model.

Its an amazing looking game, my camera doesn't really do it justice. There's a minor bug with the tree rendering in the intro. Its about 17 - 20 fps in game, but it looks pretty fast.... Once the 400x240 framebuffer mode is made available we can get another ~10% since I don't have to render to an FBO then to the backbuffer. It seems some games are GPU bottlenecked after all, at 800x480 banjo kazooie is about 10 fps.
Klinkt als veel werk aan de software kant nog...quote:Today I am invited to a birthday party in berlin, so I took the opportunity and invited myself to EvilDragon's home in Ingolstadt to have a look at his pre-production pandora. While Ingolstadt isn't exactly on the way between Karlsruhe and Berlin, I figured having a premature look at the pandora is well worth a 3:30h/500km detour. I had quite an early start having to get up at 5:30 in the morning after 4 hours of sleep. The trainride was as beautiful as I hoped the pandora would be, the whole country is covered in fresh white snow, the sun was shining, the weather was sweet (and freaking cold). As I my train came closer I got somewhat nervous. Would the pandora be as good as she is constantly described by it developers (hello craig). I certainly hoped so, just to rub it in the face of my twatty vapourscreaming friends. To my knowledge, I'm the first "normal" customer (no first or second party developer), to write a preview.
So let's get it on.
NOTES
--- I had the pleasure to use a pre-production model with a two different nightly builds of the software. This preview does not rate the device that will be shipped! ---
--- I am german. I don't consider my english bad, but I know it isn't perfect, so please forgive minor mistakes in orthography and style and ask if something isn't clear ---
--- There won't be many (or any) news in this preview. The process of the pandora development is too open for that ---
--- Everything written here is my opinion, im not affiliated with anything (websites, magazines, open gaming handheld development startups) concerning the pandora ---
--- NES and SNES are Famicom and Super Famicom. I don't know which name it has in the US ---
First off, EvilDragon is - as well as online - a super nice guy in reality. Thanks again for having me at your home, I had a great time.
Well, what's to say about the pandora? It's stunning. Really. ED and craigix are absolutely right when they tell you that this device will rock.
Looks:
It is the pre-production-model, the same that ED took photos and videos of. The silk-screening isn't done and the finish is not finished . It already looks lovely nonetheless. Some things need the finishing and redo: the shrinking, left side of the battery compartment, translucent LED cover and shoulder buttons. Nothing new here, but I'll be honest, in normal use, it's hard to see this stuff (except the shoulder buttons). Shrinking and battery compartment issues can be seen with the naked eye and a close look, but you'll need a magnifying glass to see the led cover-problem.
Concerning the shoulder buttons: They are okay as they are now, I guess everyone would be grateful if he had them on any other device. I had a look at the translucent case, too, the shoulderbuttons there are better (don't ask, it's a chinese thing ) and we will get better ones in the final version. The LEDs look nice and remind me of older Thinkpads where you could see the same LEDs whether the lid was closed or not. With closed lid, the device bulky compared to other modern devices. But well, those devices are mostly smaller than the battery of our sweety, so go figure. The Pandora-Cube on the lid is good to distinguish it from japan-based lid-closing gaming handhelds.
Build Quality:
Very nice. Really. Especially the base part feels rock solid. I pushed but the case didn't flex. The battery compartment feels very solid too. Me and ED (rhymes galore) opened and closed the thing several times, more often than you would normally do in a month and it feels like you could to it a million times without breaking anything. D-pad, action-buttons and keyboard are very well built, it felt absolutely like a device a big company could sell.
One thing about the lid I didn't knew (I follow the official and inofficial blog but I don't read every last thread on the forums): The hinge is not THAT sturdy that you can use the pandora when the lid isn't snapped to the final position WHILE WALKING OF JUMPING. THIS IS FREAKING IMPORTANT AND I WILL COME TO YOUR HOME AND PUNCH YOU IN THE FACE IF YOU POST SOMETHING ABOUT IT WITHOUT READING WHAT I HAVE TO SAY IN THE NEXT PARAGRAPH TEN TIMES!
Ergonomics and using the pandora:
So here you hopefully are still reading on from the last paragraph. Important: If you use the pandora handheld you WILL snap the lid to the final position. Because it's by far the most comfortable one. Unless your hands are somewhat crippled, you will. Believe me. If you don't move, you can use it with the lid in any other position, but it will snap close or fully open if you walk or jump around with it. I can't think of any situation where you would hold the pandora in this uncomfortable position while moving, so this is no issue. The only reason to use the pandora half-opened is when you put it on a table or something to watch a video or else and this works flawless.
I hope I got this covered now, it is the only thing that really was new to me and it doesn't concern me one bit, but I thought I let you know. And please remember the last paragraph of "Build quality".
The keyboard:
Is great. For a handheld device the buttons are really big, so you won't have any issues with fat thumbs or drunken typing. You will type with your thumbs. I don't have big hands, I'd say less than average and I can reach everything comfortably. Even stuff like capital s, which is one of the harder letter as you have to press shift with the left thumb and reach over to the s with the right one is easy to do. This is without sticky keys (wasn't implemented on this build). I even used a little vim (because I work as a linux administrator and plan to use the pandora with ssh) and I think with some training it will even be suitable for that. My typing speed increased while using the pandora (I ony was 2 hours or so at EDs) and I'm confident that with a few days use, you will type very fast on this thing. ED was way faster than me already. It is however no full-size keyboard and you won't write your next book on it. But for everyday use, IM, surfing, writing on forums, blog, twitter and else it is fine.
The d-pad:
Sad news first: On the builds available and in such a short time there was no game or emulator available to really test it. This would be games I know and play reasonably well, like Contra III, SMB1-3, SMB World, Street Fighter and some more. EvilDragon and the devs have better things to do then making emulators run under XFCE for me to play, so I can't make a final judgement on the d-pad. I did however play some supertux and DooM and I tell you: the d-pad just feels great. Really. I played a lot of NES and SNES in my days, some xbox360, dreamcast, ps1, ps2 too and I can say it feels freaking comfortable. As Supertux and DooM don't use diagonals I wasn't able to check them, but I _felt_ them. I'll eat some broccoli if this thing won't let you produce lengthy combos in beat-em-ups.
Action Buttons:
They work. They feel good and they work. You can feel when the button is pressed, this is very defined (omfg, this isn't proper english, is it?). I don't have much to say about them, I just can't imagine how to make them better.
Analogue Controls:
There was no game to play with them but they feel _very_ nice. If they work and the software makes good use of them, you will have the best analogue control on any mobile device (yes, I'm looking at you, PSP). I can't say anything devinitive about them.
Shoulder buttons:
Well, as you already know, they need some fixing. They are digital buttons, so I assume if the click distance is shortened, they will be nice.
Touchscreen:
I don't really plan to use the touchscreen a lot as I don't use the mouse alot on fullsize computers. You can use the touchscreen with your fingers if the buttons aren't too small. The screen feels nice and is matte, so it isn't sir smudgealot like certain smartphones and you don't have to wipe it after every use. The touchscreen works as expected. It was configured that rightclick was pressing long and this worked too. The only thing I can't see coming (for me) is using the stylus and the basecontrols (keyboard, buttons and pads) and the same time a lot. I think with the d-pad as cursor buttons and the keyboard and perhaps even the analogue control as a mouse you will find that you'll use the touchscreen mainly for mouse-only or heavy-mouse-use (now there is a word that can't come up too often) applications. I may be wrong, because as stated above I don't use mice alot anyway. The screen itself looks very good. High resolution, bright, good viewing angle. Contrast is higher on OLEDs (no shit, sherlock) but good anyway.
Speakers:
Well, they are tiny speakers. They are okay for gaming sound, they aren't very loud, but lond enough for me. No HiFi, sorry.
Headphone-Out:
Sounds very nice. I just had my Koss Porta Pro to check, but I was satisfied. I put it up to full power and it was too loud for me. Guess that should be enough
TV-Out:
Not tested. But I saw the cable. It has sweet little pandoralogos on it.
SD-Card-Slots:
Work like every other SD-Card-Slot in the world.
Volume Control:
A real, hardware wheel (Rhyme again!). I like it alot, I don't think it will accidently be rolled (?!?) in your pocket.
Changing the battery:
You don't really have to do it a lot (unless you need a day of pandora-using without a power outlet, but it works quite nice. The battery isn't heavy, I expected much more. It looks cool because it has a pandora-logo on it.
Overall:
I considered stealing it.
It fits nice in my trousers front pockets and is way to small for my cargo pants' side pockets. The rounded edges on the top let it glide in to your pocket. Really, it is absolutely pocketable if you don't wear tight trousers. I really had to touch it again and again. When I first saw the design (feels a long time ago, I guess it was somewhen in the eighties) I honestly didn't think it would be so freaking comfortable. The only thing I can imagine is that people with no motoric skills and very fat thumbs will press to action buttons and the same time once a year, as they are a little bit closer together as on the SNES. You will be stunned and surprised.
Software:
As I wrote before, I tested some nightly builds of the OS with XFCE as DE. XFCE is really snappy, I'd say it is as fast as gnome on my thinkpad x200s with a dualcore 1.86Ghz CPU and 2 Gigs of RAM. It reacts instantly. I hadn't the opportunity to test WiFi because one of the devs (sorry, I forgot your name) is currently working on it so the Nightly Build had a half-done driver on it. Same with PMenu. I saw the .PND-magic and I think it is a very nice way to put software on a device which mainly relies on temp-storage. It is very fast even on the really slow card ED used. The icons appeared on the Desktop instantly. XFCE didn't really look sexy but when we the people have the device we'll change that in a minute, I'm sure. I played the first two levels of Doom and even with unoptimized control I loved it. Quake is framebuffer only atm, but the control scheme of Q1 and 2 is somewhat similar. With a little training you'll be on par with people using a normal keyboard. I know in the youtube videos of FPSs on the pandora the players always suck but it must be because they can't play FPS or have to use a camera or something. Supertux was okay but I don't really like the game that much. Using the shell was cool on such a small device. With a nice keyboard-setup using the shell will work superb. Not much more on the software side but it is being worked on hard and if the pandora ships and the devcounter goes from under ten to over hundred there will be a lot to see.
Conclusion
I'll conclude on the pandora part: OMFG!!!! This is the coolest thing ever. It is worth every cent, every second of waiting, everything. You will jump around full of joy once you received it. You'll feed it the coolest homebrew and emulators on the planet. You will play cool games from the 80s and 90s on the go WITH CONTROLS AS GOOD OR BETTER as the original. The pandora is still unique and it's hard to believe you'll find anything even remotely comparable in the future.
Thanks ED for letting me into your house, sharing this experience, telling me interesting stuff, showing me interesting pictures (they will be released an some point in the future for sure), showing me your office and everything. I hope I'll come back one day! Thanks to all the other developers for putting so much work in this. As far as I can oversee it, you did everything right.

Just for clarification - are you saying that despite the hardware being delayed over a year - the software for the emulators still don't support the use of a d-pad?
I find that mildly disappointing... so even if they'd shipped the first 1000 before Christmas we wouldn't really be able to use them to actually play emulated games?
Obviously not - you have seen me play on loads of them, Eds firmware when he turned up to see the Pandora just didn't have the set up to use emulators. This is because Eds Pandora is being used as a testing unit for the latest firmware with desktop applications being the top priority.
My unit is for emulator testing.

quote:First of all, since this is what most of would want to know: The Pandora did pass the CE testing! Yeah!
Now, for those interested in some more details on the test... here you go.
The quick test we did last time was just one of seven tests. The one that you can easily fail: The radiation testing.
This was the one we failed last time - but using tons of copper tape (well, not exactly tons... but quite a few stripes ), we shielded it good enough to pass it.
The other tests are more or less brutal: They all do test how sturdy the Pandora is.
Some are harmless, like shooting frequency waves from 80Hz to 1GHz onto the running Pandora to see if it will somehow flicker, crash or fail.
Well, it didn't. Linux doesn't crash, so the Pandora didn't even think of crashing just because of a few frequency waves.
The same thing has been repeated - this time with transmitting those frequencies into the power line, not directly onto the device.
Nothing. Angström was still standing there and smiling at us.
Of course, another similar test which had those frequencies directly from the power mains also didn't disturb our little friend.
The next test was easy: What happens when there's a power failure? Well, nothing of course, as the Pandora will simply run from battery then. Easy. Still, some devices do crash if the power failure is only for a few milliseconds. Well, some do. But not the Pandora.
Nothing to worry about here, now onto the more brutal tests.
(Note: If you are in risk of suffering a heart attack or something like that, you'd better not read on)
Next we have the ESD testing. Yep, electrostatical discharging. We did use a small device to fire statical electricity all over the Pandora. You could hear the LCD suffer, but it did survive without any damage. Of course, the OS was still running fine.
The next test is the most brutal one: What happens to the device, if there is a thunder struck near your house and the Pandora is connected to the mains via the AC Adaptor?
About 20% of the devices fail that test... they go down with a lot of sparkles and are dead. Yep. Dead, Jim.
So... we did try to fry the Pandora with peaks of 500V and 1000V. Nothing. Not even a blink. The OS was still working.
So, what did we learn here?
CE testing is brutal. And Linux is stable.
Nuff said. I will get the PDFs with the detailed testing reports tomorrow

Physically, they have fixed everything we wanted, it's much more easier to assemble, that's a huge success. From the usable viewpoint, it's good to go
The first silkscreen test also was decent. There are some misalignments, but it shows that it can be done. Also, for the final silk, we can use the official Bluetooth logo.
The Finishing also is much better, as can be clearly seen on the image below (I'll let you guess what's the old and what's the new one).
Posted ImagePosted Image
Craig did also test the hinge during the last days - meaning: Opening and closing it for about 1000 times - and not a single problem here. It still works nicely. Also, the PSUs we'll ship with the device are there and are quite sturdy. Now, let's come to the reason I want to run in circles, scream and shout sometimes...
The finished case (with the final finishing, the last cosmetic changes, etc.) should already have been shipped last week.
This is the eMail Michael just got yesterday:
"Dear Mr.Michael,
sorry, after i discussed with our technician and we found all of
modifications would be finished on Jan.15,2010.
We compared market products with our products last week and we need more EDM
working to make the same quality.
I have to inform you and so sorry for delay."
We got this eMail when the cases should've been shipped since a few days already... and this is not the first time, actually.
Now you know where such confusing deadlines come from - we actually get dates when something will be ready and tell you.. and after it should've happened, we get such mails.
Well, the good thing is: They're working hard on making it a high-quality product (no cheap stuff) and besides some cosmetic changes (mostly in the finishing and a bit in shrinking), the case is working nicely.
So, let's scream and shout together until the best cases in the whole world will arrive.
Thanks for reading - oh, and of course a happy new year to all of you guys
quote:All 4000 boards have not been populated yet. It actually becomes an issue with storage to have so many boards sitting built all at once. They have to be kept somewhere which tends to be awkward because boards must sit in ESD safe trays on grounded carts (remember that picture of the 80/105?). Issues with humidity control are important because parts are no longer sitting in sealed bags, although they are already soldered so it is more of a general storage thing. Craig meant that absolutely everything is ready to go, absolutely every part is sitting at the facility, things are being tested carefully and slowly still, the build process is understood...umm I don't know what else to add so I don't read the next 10 pages about how the sky is falling. There is merit in being vague, but I'll take the chance anyway.
Some continuing issues with alignment or fit in the test jig back in December held things up slightly. The Christmas holiday/New Year didn't help past the 24th either. The New Year has things running again and it's obvious now the PCBs are not the bottleneck. Damn plastics company. <grumble grumble>
Before any arm chair engineers pop in, please be aware that building the boards is a well understood process at this point and done very quickly. The pick and place machine can jam them out as quickly as you can keep the reels loaded. The boards are being built in batches according to how fast they can be tested. Currently that is going to stay at about 450-500 at a time. The process is to build 500, get them into testing and build the next 500 while the first ones are being tested. Once cases are available, the third parallel step will be to have a batch of 500 being assembled while a previous set is in testing and another new set is being populated.
All 4000+ antenna boards and LCD cables have been assembled and inspected. Building and testing will continue throughout January and be ready for the cases. As usual, I have to fear the backlash from misunderstanding my words and I have to read over what I type 10 times before posting it but keep in mind that most of you don't and aren't expected to truly understand this process. Things are progressing in the natural fashion a small run (by any big company's standards) like this should be done. When the cases show up, this parallel process will fall right into place and pump out shipments at a steady and predictable rate that has been expected from day one. We can't build and ship all 4000 in a day or even a week but it will be done as quickly as possible.
Some people talk about how we should spare no expense to get these done sooner and we agree. I might bring my wife to Texas to help with the labour in order to get more done sooner and I'll probably spend 12-15 hours a day on the floor building these bad boys (if they will let me) to get them to you all as fast as humanly possible. It's going to be an exhaustive and miserable process, but that's not for any paying customer to care about.
I have created a well documented assembly manual for the Pandora which contains several parallel processes that can be set up as stations. There are six sub stations and two main stations. The main stations (assembly of lid and assembly of base) require the most staff in order to crank them out faster. The sub stations require one person each (could be more if there are people) and are monotonous (ie. trim and solder speaker wires, apply copper tape, etc.). They could also be combined into more tasks and fewer stations. Hopefully this helps people understand that no news on the forum does not mean nothing is happening. It has never stopped being a lot of work behind the scenes.

Check out his entire review as well as some comparison shots after the break.
First Impressions
I was unsure what to expect when i first clapped eyes on the Pandora, half of me anticipating it being a heavy, bloated and unpocketable device. There was no need to worry though as it is smaller in the flesh (plastic) than it looks in the pics. Very compact and very pocketable.
The Controls
The biggest worry for me would have been dodgy controls, ala GP2X – Spongy Action buttons and naff D-Pad. The good news is that the D-Pad feels excellent, very Sega Saturn/Megadrive like, this is better than could have ever been expected from a homebrew device. The action buttons are also in a different league to the GP2X, have a good level of travel and no spongy response either, they also feel well spaced from one another. Analogue nubs have been a big talking point round here and after forking out 100k to develop and manufacture them from the ground up, I can see why Craig is so pleased with them. They feel well weighted and balanced with excellent feedback and a good level of travel from their centres. A huge improvement over what Sony managed on the PSP.
The Keyboard
I didn’t expect much usability here, but was astonished at how usable it actually is despite the small form factor. The keys sit well above the handheld, allowing plenty of travel, excellent for such a small device. I managed to type a few sentences whilst holding the Pandora and typing with my thumbs – Totally painless.
Screen
I tried some early builds of N64 , MAME and Megadrive emulators, basically the same as you have seen in the videos so won’t comment on that, but i will mention that the screen coped brilliantly with the fast moving scrolling of Sonic & Knuckles with no noticable motion blur – A wholesale improvment over the PSP.
Summary
Whilst taking the elevator back down to the Ground Floor in Pandora Towers HQ, i felt a mighty sense of relief, ecstatic that nothing has been botched up or just plainly swept under the carpet. I understand how frustrating the wait has been for all concerned but can assure everyone that it will be worth the wait when you get the finished product in your hands.
In my eyes, the Pandora is everything the GP2X should have been and a whole lot more.

In the meantime, while it has been quiet around here, a lot of other things have happened.
Preparing the Assembly
Michael has spend all his time preparing for the mass assembly.
He created a well documented assembly manual for the Pandora which contains several parallel processes that can be set up as stations. There are six sub stations and two main stations. Michael himself will probably spend 12-15 hours a day on the floor helping to build building these bad boys to get them to you all as fast as humanly possible. It's going to be an exhaustive and miserable process, but that will help speed things up a bit. Yep. You read right - some of you guys will actually get a Pandora assembled by the creator himself!
Preparing the OS
The devs have continued to work on the OS. DJWillis fixed (and is fixing) quite a few bugs while also doing various tests to make it NAND-ready.
The OS itself is in a pretty good state. XFCE4 is working nicely, all those installed apps (AbiWord, Midori, ClawsMail, XChat, etc.) run flawlessly. PND Discovery and starting is also working fine. The standard stuff (closing the LID switches off the backlight, battery charging, etc.) is also included.
Here are the current issues still to fix:
* Include pmenu as second startup-option
* WiFi works, but can't be stopped once running. If we can't fix the driver in time, we'd probably put in a small tool where you can enable and disable WiFi on start.
* Bluetooth works fine but is missing a GUI.
* Some permissions need to be fixed (so a normal user can change maximum clock speed, etc.). Nothing spectacular
* Other minor stuff (keyboard mappings, etc.)
* Include scripts to enable TV Out.
So while it will surely not be perfect on first release, you can be sure playing, surfing, working, etc. works fine. It just is in need of more tweaking.
Preparing the shipping
I don't know how Craigs shop looks like at the moment, but I got over 700 empty boxes lying around, waiting to be filled with Pandoras. We're ready to ship them out as fast as possible when they come in!
So - everything is prepared from our side. And as soon as the cases are good... let the fun begin!
quote:mweston schreef
The cases won't be here until Thurs/Fri at best. We've got some really bad weather here right now which is shutting down a lot of services and China didn't ship exactly when they said they would (shocking I know!).

I have no idea what has been going on in China since the 15th. They only email me when something is wrong and only answer me on Skype when something is done or if something is wrong. It's a real treat.
The good news is that I was told these have a final finish and silk screening all according to my last review. They also promise to pump out as many cases as possible before their holiday so we can satisfy at least those who ordered first, maybe more.
...maybe, maybe, maybe... yeah I'm sick of that too
quote:The Chinese usually only talk to Fatih – he was in Dubai the last week.
So our latest info was, that the cases should be sent on the 15th – thus we thought they would arrive last week.
Fatih is back since last Friday and he immediately took care of the issue.
The Chinese weren’t 100% happy with the cases yet – and they didn’t want to send another intermediate review case, instead they wanted to send one that they think is perfectly ok. This case has been made now and should have been sent on Monday. I’ve prepared a blog post with these infos – I won’t post it before I’m sure, have pictures and a tracking number. This number will be posted publicly so everyone can track those cases.
It really looks like it could be green lighted soon. The Chinese are preparing everything right now – and want to send the MP cases before the Chinese New Year.
If we’d known in advance that the Chinese would mess around like that, we might have get a refund(?) and get the cases produced elsewhere (The price difference, for those interested: We pay 20.000 USD for the moulds in China, but every other company we asked wanted 130.000 minumum. A cost we couldn’t afford). Thank god that we only had the cases produced in China.
Well, we’re hoping for the best. We should be able to make this last step!

Nope, we're not playing Lemmings, but I guess a lot of you wanted to know what happened to those cases.
Well, we too wanted to know - the last status update we had was that they were shipping on January 15th and therefore we assumed the cases should have arrived last week.
Unfortunately, Fatih had business to do in Dubai... and he is the only one the Chinese actually do talk to (except for if they encounter any problems, then they also send a mail to Michael. But they didn't do that).
So we didn't know until he returned a few days ago that the cases hadn't been shipped yet, they were still working and tweaking as they really wanted to make sure this will be the last case they need to send to us before we start the mass production.
We're still trying to find out the complete story of what happened and why there was another delay. A friend of Fatih (who can speak chinese) will help us here, as communication with them isn't easy, and there might even have been some misunderstandings, etc.
Whoever does think that that company is a small, cheap company that only tries to rip us off:
Nope, that's definately not true. Fatih has been working with them since years. Also, they created some other parts for the Pandora which have been finished long ago and didn't make any problems. It just seems the case was much more complex than they had thought.
Some of their other customers are Sanyo and Toyota and they have been established 1998, so one thing we know: They are reliable... but (as it is the case with many chinese companies): They do need some time to finish it off.
So, rest assured, the cases aren't screwed, we just don't know yet when exactly they will arrive. We have been promised they will ship enough mass produced cases before the chinese new year. I leave it to you whether you want to believe it or not - I just will pray it will be true.
So much for the cae situation. I hope you can now understand why we chose that company. Believe us, it's a pretty annoying feeling having everything setup for mass assembly and then wait in anticipation for the cases.
Oh, I have one more information that will probably make second batchers happy: We already ordered the parts for the second batch to decrease the waiting time.
Finally, some small OS informations:
* We got a new WiFi driver, thanks to Palm We'll need to test it out more, but it should work better than the one we have.
* pmenu is finally working fine in the image, so we have an almost completely working image (for a first release) ready.
* We also did a quick try with the Ubuntu netbook-launcher-efl. It compiled and worked nicely. Only the icons were missing, but that's because it uses the Human icons from Ubuntu which we haven't installed yet. The nice thing about it is that it does support finger scrolling. It might not make it into the first release, but I doubt it will take long until it will be included into an update. I personally prefer XFCE4 and pmenu though

We've learnt something. Chinese English and English is definately not the same.
Good thing a friend of Fatih does speak Chinese. For the company, he's now our official represantative. As he could speak with them in their native language, a lot of things cleared up.
When they were talking about "soon", it didn't mean what we did understand as "soon". "Soon" did mean "as soon as we're finished.". Regardless, how long that will take. So each time they said us "We'll soon have pictures", we assumed they will follow the next few days - which didn't happen.
Another thing we found out is when they said "We're finished and will do some testing injections", they didn't mean they were finished with ALL our changes, but they finished ONE thing on the to-do-list and did a test injection to see if that was fine. That's why we got some shipping dates which never happened - and with us wondering why they didn't tell us. They sent us emails with stuff like "We fixed it all and will do the next samples on Friday". We then thought, okay, the next samples will ship on Friday. However, as we now do know, it meant they finished another step on those days and made an internal testing injection to find out if everything is okay. It wouldn't have made sense to ship us those half-finished cases (it would just have cost a lot of money). And that's the reason why they didn't tell us that they didn't ship... they never planned to ship it
It's really interesting what can happen if business partners do speak completely different languages as native language.
So much for the background "What happened". Now onto the more interesting stuff: What WILL happen?
One thing we did understand correctly was that their goal is to have the mass-produced cased finished and shipped until the chinese new year!
We now do know that they did finish the last tweaks on the case mould, the silkscreen and the keyboard mould (which still had one mis-aligned letter). And with finished, I do mean REALLY finished. Not just another step, but all steps. This does mean they'll ship the final samples within the next days. They are VERY positive they are perfect, so as soon as they shipped out everything, they prepare the mass production. So as soon as we get the samples and approve it, mass production will start. As they can produce 1000 cases a day and we need 4000 for the first batch, this can happen within four days. That should work out just before the chinese new year!
I know it does sound a lot like stuff you already heard before - but this time, we were talking with them in their native language, so I assume it will be much more accurate than anything before!
Misverstand dus. Komt dus snel goed. .quote:

van twitterquote:I've got daily contact with Fatih but at the moment we hear the same everyday: "The technicians need some more time, but we will call you soon".
Fatih is short on sleep for a while now, during daytime he works normaly an at night he begins to call them every hour an is getting on their nerves. His friend discussed with them in chinese and he puts huge pressure on them. That seems to be the only thing, that is working. The little things made it possible,... they are now 100% satisfied with the case and the finishing. And they said we will be thankful, even if it took a little longer, when we see the case.
We hope that this time it's true. Chinese belive in thankfulness, so it could be true this time.
Most of the big companies are in china permanently, when they produce in china. Now I know why - you have to kick their asses permanently.
In case of emergency Fatih will fly there - we have some thoughts for a plan B now in our heads.
The production will run untill february 13th (we asked about that). When everything starts on the 8th, we will end up having 4000 cases. Because the case was technically allright before, there will be no huge delay with michael giving his green light whe it arrives.
The whole project won't be cancelled, don't worry. It would be much more expensive for us than search a new chinese case-company...
We survived the bank-crisis, the paypal-problem, some juristic differences... and we will survive the chinese. This is all very disappointing, when everything is ready and we only wait for that one final part, but that gives us more time to kick them till everything is produced.
Don't worry, we are putting pressure on them as much as we can, and try to do everything to finish it. We ourselves want to deliver to you as much as you want it.
Infact, this is nervous condition for us too.
But we will get through all this. There is no wall we can't break through :dash: ;D
Don#t forget that until now we have not aquired any credit or investors for this project. And we could still get help from this. So a "dead" of the project is out of question
So the hope for the production befor the new year is not ded. Or maybe they will produce during the holidays for some euro extra.
I personally would be at least a bit satisfied, when it will be only 1000 cases - then some of you would have to wait a little longer, but the fact, to have some real, working Pandoras, that only have to be mass-produced, would lighten my heart.

Sure the hardware may have come along fine with minimal testing as the assembler learned how to solder the boards better but Notaz has helped me develop a comprehensive suite of test software that has helped the assembler perfect their process. So good in fact that they have started building a batch of 1000 this week after tweaking their pilot runs.
