Madeleine was three when she disappeared from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, the Algarve, Portugal, in May last year while her parents Kate and Gerry dined at a nearby restaurant.

There have been hundreds of sightings of Madeleine across Europe and north Africa since she went missing.

In an unfortunate cross-cultural coincidence, Halo developer Bungie has inadvertently drawn parallels to a famous child abduction case to promote its new Halo 3 expansion pack. In a new teaser trailer, which depicts a war-torn city landscape, various messages flash up on the screen, including one that asks “Maddie, where are you?”

Cross-cultural? Our Maddie is international…

For many people, particularly living in Britain, this seemingly innocuous phrase will bring back memories of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, a three-year old British girl who was allegedly abducted from a Portuguese resort while on holiday with her parents. At the time of the abduction, the slogan “Find Maddie” and “Where’s Maddie?” featured prominently in British newspapers and international publicity campaigns around the world.

Innocuous? A missing child and some PR. What a coincidence, indeed. Still, Halo 3…

Bungie has denied any intent to create publicity by exploiting the McCann disappearance, with a representative claiming “This is both an unfortunate and unintended coincidence” on the official Halo forum.

Clarence Mitchell, the spokesman for Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry, said they were aware of the reference. He said: "There is a brief glimpse of the phrase. "If this was designed to be a reference to Madeleine then that would be in very poor taste and deeply disappointing to Kate and Gerry.

"The game manufacturer has said it is a coincidence and we are happy to take that on face value.
"Having said that, we would like the reference to be removed or amended, but I don't know how possible that is." The game is an "expansion pack" to the highly successful Halo 3 – a science fiction shooting game published on the Xbox 360.

The minute-long trailer for the game features pods landing on a futuristic city. The view then moves to a helmet camera. Various messages and phrases flash up on the screen. The Maddie reference is visible for less than a second on three frames, but was spotted by British gamers.

They then posted it up on web forums. Bungie then responded to the concerns on the official Halo forum. A spokesman said: "This is an unfortunate coincidence but there is no connection between Bungie's game and the tragic disappearance of that little girl. "As always, all of the characters in our games are fictional. "Any similarities between real life and the characters in our games are purely coincidental. "That said, this is both an unfortunate and unintended coincidence." Madeleine, from Rothley, was snatched while on holiday in Praia da Luz, Portugal, just a few days before her fourth birthday last May.

Now that the Maddie case has been archived by the Public Ministry due to a lack of evidence; now that the process has been opened for public consultation; and now that the PJ inspector who coordinated the investigation, Gonçalo Amaral, has already published a book about the issue, it has become possible to list my conclusions about the case. Here they are:

1 – Contrary to what was suggested by the British press, which presented him as a negligent policeman who spent his life in long lunches, washed down with plenty of wine, and with little investigative capacity, the impression that I got from Gonçalo Amaral, both from the tv interviews and from reading the book, is that he coordinated a competent investigation, that followed the rules, that was neither biased nor tendentious, and that he did everything to crack the case.

4 – The behaviour of the little girl’s parents’ friends is very strange. There are contradictory depositions that seem to have been “built” to lead the PJ into the direction of the abduction theory. On the other hand, the fact that all of the friends abandoned Portugal in a hurry is extremely disturbing.

5 – The manner in which the little girl’s parents behave, speaking to Sky News on the same day and transforming the case into a media event, obviously forcing the abduction theory, is extremely surprising. It does not seem normal to me that a father and a mother, when confronted with the disappearance of a daughter, establish as their first and only priority to transform the case into a worldwide media event.

6 – Since the first hour, the English press accepted the abduction theory, which was communicated to them by the parents, without judgment. Like a brainless flock, they fell on Praia da Luz exercising enormous pressure on the PJ, suggesting that Portugal is a third world country, and complicating the investigation. We remember that it was an English journalist that “invented” the suspicions about Robert Murat, thus forcing the PJ to investigate him and to waste time with a situation that was lateral, but which suited the parents’ purpose.

7 – The fact that the little girl’s father is a personal friend to Prime Minister Gordon Brown led to the English government making available to the parents, media specialists who built and forced the abduction theory. It was a highly professional operation that used sophisticated marketing techniques, in the press and on the internet, with meetings with international personalities, which culminated with the visit to the Pope in the Vatican.

8 – This remarkable public campaign was accompanied by a political pressure behind the scenes, with the English government exerting pressure on the Portuguese government, in the direction of the abduction theory.

9 – For many months, it was evident that the PJ had lost the public opinion battle and that it was not prepared to handle a media and political pressure of such proportion. In terms of public communication, the case was very badly managed by the PJ and by the Public Ministry.

10 – Despite these tremendous political and media pressures, the investigation proceeded on the terrain and was approaching important conclusions, which clearly pointed to the parents’ guilt, at least of the crime of cadaver concealment.

All of these conclusions lead me to formulate two questions: Why were the directory of the PJ and the Public Ministry incapable of having the courage to accuse the parents, like the investigation suggested? Was it the Portuguese and the English governments that decided to sabotage the investigation and to let the parents “off the hook”?

In the case of Madleine's disappearance, the McCanns' spokesmen and lawyers have maintained regular contact with editors and directors of the major British newspapers. * On September 12th 2007, after Kate and Gerry McCann were officially constituted as arguidos, Justine McGuiness, their then spokesperson, and their lawyer Angus McBride, met with several editors and directors to whom they explained that the fact that the Portuguese authorities had not found Madeleine's body was the best proof of the couple's innocence.

(Editor's note: And the British editors and directors did not come up with a few cases to prove this was not how the law works? No body proves innocence? And Angus McBride, a lawyer, actually put his name to this bollox? Some things, as the cliché goes, you just couldn't make up!)

Amaral suspects that, five months after the incident took place on May 3, Portuguese political power had already decided on a strategy. "For me, the investigation was dead from October 2nd 2007, following a new English ultimatum. I have the feeling that the statements made by the national director of our national police sought to prepare public opinion for the inevitable, that is to say, the end of the investigation and the filing of the case."

Responding to different questions, some generalisations, others specific, including some from Rosa Neira, the mother of the Vigo resident Déborah, who appeared dead in bizarre circumstances, Amaral also gave his impression on the McCann couple, the parents of the girl. "They are normal people, parents who have lost a daughter whom they certainly loved very much and for whom they have cried, and they feel guilty for that. The father wanted to save at least the rest of the family, the children who are left."

The inspector was referring to the possible negligence for having left the children alone while they had a system of checking every so often but, above all, the suspicion of the concealment of the body falling on them.

Amaral said that the fact that McCanns would be considered as "charged" created a turning point in the investigation between the Portuguese and English police. "There was a spoken understanding between two policemen to continue the line of investigation seriously, facing the possibility that her death had occurred in the apartament but, suddenly, the English changed course without any coherent technical explanation. It was always strange how the couple were treated, even after they were considered suspects, and the police information to which they occasionally had access."

Concerning the participation of the media he said that "a global phenomenon occurred, never before seen, in which the British press acted with very suspicious organisation, maintaining the thesis of the abduction. They said many things, truths and lies, and attended, in addition to the duty of information, disinformation campaigns that sought to discredit the criminal investigation and those responsible for them, considering them as a Third World country."

David Payne, one of the McCanns’ friends that were on holidays in the Algarve on the 3rd of May last year, when Madeleine disappeared, was suspected of paedophile behaviours.

According to what CM was able to establish, the depositions were given on the 16th of May. But they only entered the process in January 2008 and are included in the 13th volume of the process files. At that point in time, Kate and Gerry were already arguidos, the rogatory letters had already been issued and the English, including Dave, showed their reluctance in returning to Portugal.

Touching the nipple

Katherina made a statement that was eight pages long. She reported holidays in Mallorca with several English [people], including the McCanns and the Paynes. Two incidents left her with serious doubts about the friends’ behaviour and lead her to create suspicions that were never confirmed.

The first one happened on a night when Gerry and Dave were talking about Maddie. Katherina does not know what they were saying but she remembers that Dave sucked on his fingers, pushing them into the mouth and pulling them out again, while his other hand traced a circle around the nipple, with a circular movement over the clothes. “That was done in a provocative manner”, recalls Katherina, who says that it stuck to her memory.

Days later, the scene repeated itself. The doctor saw Dave making the same gestures again, while he talked about his own daughter. Scared, Katherina said nothing about the incident. But she took special caution, asking her husband never to let the doctor come close to the bathroom when her daughter was having a bath.

Arul went to the police to tell the same story. Katherina’s companion confirmed the gestures that were made by Dave during the conversation with Gerry but asserted that he wasn’t aware that they were talking about Maddie. He did find the behaviour in extremely bad taste, but didn’t see it being repeated.

The incident ended up forgotten in his memory and it was only the disappearance of Madeleine, who had also been with them on the Mallorca vacation, that revived it.

During the deposition, Katherina went even further and said she had associated the gestures to someone who likes to watch child pornography. “I remember thinking whether he looked at the girls in a different manner”, she concluded.

The book 'Maddie - The Truth of Lie' is the starting point for a documentary that is being filmed in the Algarve over the next 20 days. Goncalo Amaral, coordinator of the PJ in the process and author of the book, is not the only character to appear in the TV production.

The documentary will be produced by Manuel Fonseca, of Valentine de Carvalho, and most of the filming will take place in Perth and in Praia da Luz, where Madeleine McCann disappeared from on May 3, 2007. "First we will work and then make statements. The formal announcement will be at another time," said Manuel Fonseca to CM, producer of films such as 'Koko' and 'The Private Life of Salazar'.

Goncalo Amaral coordinated the first five months of the investigation, in one of the most media focussed cases ever. The inquiry eventually ended, this summer, at which time the former coordinator published his book, a pioneering work of police revelation that has sold about 200 thousand copies in Portugal. It has been on sale since September in Spain and will soon be published in Denmark, Sweden and Norway. US-based firm Oakley International was taken on by the Find Madeleine Fund earlier this year on a £500,000 six-month contract.

The company was chosen by double-glazing tycoon Brian Kennedy, who has promised to back the McCanns financially to help solve the mystery of the disappearance of their daughter.

Oakley was hired to monitor a telephone hotline, carry out detective work and review CCTV footage from around the world of possible sightings of the missing girl.

But Mr Kennedy became concerned by the level of Oakley's £43,500 ($74,155) expenses claim in the first month of the contract.

The company's contract was terminated at the end of August after Mr Kennedy had become concerned at its lack of results.

Clarence Mitchell, spokesman for the Find Madeleine Fund, said that Oakley International was no longer working on the case.

He said: "The contract with Oakley was just one among many that have been entered into during the search for Madeleine.

"While Oakley did some valuable work, particularly in the early stages, its contract, like many others, has now come to a close.

"The search for Madeleine is continuing, however, using other resources and the performance of other contractors is constantly reviewed and monitored.

"Kate and Gerry and the backers will leave no stone unturned in the search for Madeleine."

Madeleine has not been seen since May last year, when she disappeared from the family's apartment in the Portuguese holiday resort of Praia da Luz shortly before her fourth birthday.

Former police officers are now being interviewed by Mr Kennedy to take over responsibility for the investigation into Madeleine's disappearance.

Mr Kennedy, 47, estimated to be worth about £250million, made his money in double-glazing and home-improvement ventures with companies including Everest windows.

He became involved with the McCanns after being moved by their plight during the period they were made formal suspects – arguidos – in Madeleine's disappearance.

Portuguese prosecutors dropped the couple's arguido status in July.

A spokesman for Oakley International said: "We carried out our instructions from the Fund professionally and responsibly in accordance with our agreement."

From Day 528: 12/10/2008

Day 528: First of all I want to apologise for not updating this blog for so long. I would like to assure everyone that this gap is not because there is little going on in the search for Madeleine. On the contrary, Kate and I have been incredibly busy over the last couple of months since the PJ files were made public. We and our family have always vowed to leave no stone unturned in the search for our daughter and knowing exactly what has been done and, more importantly, what has not been done is vital in planning our future strategy.

Getting the files translated accurately is a time consuming and expensive process but essential to our search. There is a huge amount of information contained within the files which we have not been party to until now and this needs to be assessed carefully. This is even more important as the Portuguese investigation is officially closed.

In some ways, although this task is monumental, it has been good for us doing being something active and positive which we believe may help find Madeleine. We are also using this period to get advice to maximise our effectiveness and efficiency in our overall strategy going forward. Keeping Madeleine’s image in the public eye will continue to be important and the distribution of posters is central to that aim.

Finally we would like to thank everyone for their continued, support, prayers and letters. I promise to do another update in the near future. We will be looking at how the website functions, as the main portal of the find Madeleine campaign, and perhaps future updates will be via another route rather than my blog. 1. The parents have paid for an expensive translation of the DVD, the cost no doubt having been borne by the people who donated to the fund. This is variously seen (within the same sentence) as them doing something active or it being something active.

Several days of interviews

It is May 8th 2007, being the fifth day after Madeleine McCann's disappearance. At this stage, the PJ have taken statements from dozens of people. Hundreds of pages in the reports. Everybody has been interviewed. Employees of the Ocean Club, nannies, or child-care workers from the Kids Club, cooks and assistant cooks at the "Tapas" and the "Millenium", cleaners, gardeners, maintenance workers, managers for the club's various services, directors and managers of the complex, tourists, owners of apartments, neighbours, people who were at the "tapas" on May 3rd 2007, tennis coaches... in short, no one was left out. Everybody was interviewed. We are sparing you all these interviews, which for the most part bring nothing to the investigation or at least no new leads. They are mainly interviews which, in general, bring out the following common points:

1) No one noticed anything unusual about Madeleine.
2) No one noticed any strange individual at the complex.
3) No one noticed anything suspicious which could be linked to Madeleine's disappearance.
4) No one noticed any suspicious vehicles or any suspicious unidentified people.

It is to be noted that even the GNR police officers, first on the spot, were interviewed by their PJ colleagues, in spite of reports of the operation being sent.

With regards to the PJ's interviews over the past few days, a change is noted in how the case is being perceived. Thus the questions which the PJ are putting to various witnesses are implying that the PJ have doubts about the statements from the parents or friends in the group. We note, however, that the slightest info, concerning the slightest suspicion was professionally checked, immediately. Numerous pages of the case file attest to this. Up to now, May 8th 2007, every lead, or opening of a lead, has been checked and it was, each time, a false lead. Like, for example, a suspicious car noticed near the Ocean Club recpetion by various witnesses. In the end, it was the service vehicle of a Club employee who had come to make an urgent repair to a door lock.

Why these doubts for the PJ?

On reading various witness statements, given the number of leads checked, it seems difficult for someone to have been able to get into the complex, gain access to the McCanns' apartment, take Madeleine, get out of the apartment, leave the Ocean club, take flight via whatever means of transport and that no one, absolutely no one, saw anything. No strangers, no suspicious or unusual vehicles, not even a shadow of a person carrying a child at the times and places where there were other people... From the police point of view, if these witness statements do not totally exclude the possibility of an abduction, they make the theory less credible. As a result, the answer must lie elsewhere. Notably with the group of friends (parents included). The only person to have seen a suspect with a child is Jane Tanner, a member of the group of friends.

Note, for the record, that all the child-care workers, having contact with Madeleine, state that Madeleine introduced herself to them by her shortened name "Maddie". This adds nothing important to the case file except that it contradicts Kate's statements. On the other hand, it is noted that the Kids Club operates three free services, one of which is in the evening until 11.30pm so that parents can eat at the restaurant in peace. Finally, we know that the Club has a, "missing alert" procedure, that it is a structured and thoughtful procedure, and that this procedure was set in motion as soon as Maddie's disappearance was announced, employees having been called from their homes to participate in the search.

Interview of an employee from the swimming pool bar

In her interview, this employee states that access is restricted to clients and that this is controlled via the client's card at the entrance. She adds that she has not come across any unauthorised person on the site. She explains that on the day of Madeleine's disappearance, at around 8.30pm, her friend was called following a problem with a lock in an apartment situated close to the "Millenium" restaurant. She went there with her friend. At around 9pm, they went back towards the Club's reception. They passed near the "Tapas" and by the McCann family's apartment. They state that they saw nothing suspicious. They saw no one and no vehicles. Her friend left the premises at around 9.10pm with his service vehicle and she left at 9.15pm in her own car.

The case file contains numerous witness statements like that, so that together, these witness statements contradict the statements from the "tapas 9" group. A reconstruction would have made this clear immediately and would have highlighted the contradictions of the informants.

Comment: This is an extremely important piece of information, as we had previously been led to believe that at 9.30pm, on the night of Madeleine's disappearance, Ms Chekaya had been invited to join the tapas table, by Gerry McCann, following completion of the quiz. Her police statement makes it quite clear that this was not the case. Consequently, she cannot corroborate, or provide an alibi for, any of the McCanns or their friends movements on the night of May 3rd.

Gerry thought “that can’t be right, that can’t be right”. He went running up to the apartment with Kate and checked everywhere she had already looked, and made a quick run around the apartment block.

The friends were on holiday with the McCanns in Praia da Luz, Portugal, last May, when Madeleine disappeared, just days before her fourth birthday.

The nickname for the group came from the restaurant where all nine adults were dining when Madeleine went missing from her family's holiday apartment nearby.

Sky's Crime correspondent Martin Brunt said: "This is the third time this year newspapers have agreed a settlement.

"The first was against Express Newspapers - they were forced to pay out just over £500,000 to Kate and Gerry McCann for more than 100 defamatory articles.

"In July, a number of newspaper groups were involved in an even bigger payout - around £600,000 - to Robert Murat, the first suspect in the case, who was subsequently cleared of suspicion by the Portuguese authorities."

If you knew anything about me at all, you would know that my predominant claim, right back to mid 2007 when I first started posting, is that Kate and Gerry McCann have friends and influence in very high places, and that they would escape any charges whatsoever, let alone convictions. That is STILL my position. I stated, (much to the chagrin of many other posters), that the Regoratory letters would never truly be executed, and that Gordon Brown would take the opportunity to intervene in the case and stop the Portuguese from visiting to conduct their enquiries when he attended the EU conference in Portugal, (which he did; I made at least FIVE posts, stating that the Portuguese entourage would not take place, despite the Portuguese Press stating that the team would be boarding a plane to the UK within 24 hours. It took 4 Months to get here, after the Home Office eventually gave the go ahead, and they never conducted a fraction of the enquiries that they were meant to). It was my letter that elicited the response from Piers Merchant that eventually forced Gordon Brown to make the only comment he has ever made to the press in the Madeleine McCann case, stating that the Government had not, inordinately assisted the McCanns.

I am not trying to blow any trumpet here. I am not, and have NEVER tried to make any accusation or wild claim. I have many, extensive contacts within both the UK and Portugal, and I have posted many things that I have been told by them, all of which have subsequently been borne out, especially within the released documents. I can not understand why my postings should cause you such concern or sceptism. I have hardly made an outlandish assertion. The information that is in the posession of my colleague, (ie: the 30,000 documents), is hardly revelationary, given that most other news agencies have the same documentation. I have merely added the information that he and I have gleaned from conducting additional enquiries in Portugal and elsewhere. I have NEVER made any claim to know what happened. (Again, if you read my posts, I have always stated that I do NOT have any true notion of what happened). I would love for nothing more than for Madeleine McCann to be found in a remote area of god knows where, alive and well. I would happily face ridicule and scorn for my postings. Is he optimistic that there will be a positive resolution? “I am neither optimistic nor pessimistic,” he said. “I am realistic. Wise words were spoken by someone over the evidence of Caylee’s death: "Speaking as a father, a day doesn't pass where I wish the evidence that we have gathered didn't add up to the painfully obvious. Sadly, I cannot change the facts surrounding the investigation."

The investigator will also have to read thousands of pages of Portuguese police files released in August and painstakingly translated. The family's spokesman Clarence Mitchell said the investigation was continuing in many countries as the McCanns study the files line by line.

Heart specialist Mr McCann said in his blog report last week: "Kate and I have been incredibly busy over the last couple of months since the files were made public.

"We and our family have always vowed to leave no stone unturned in the search for our daughter and knowing exactly what has been done and, more importantly, what has not been done is vital in planning our future strategy."

A DRAWING of a man two FBI psychics say snatched Madeleine McCann has been produced by an American TV programme.

Now investigators working for Kate and Gerry McCann say they want to see the so-called evidence revealed in the programme, which was screened last week in the US.

The drawing is of a man aged between 36 and 42 with thick dark brown or black hair and stubble. It has now been handed over to police in Portugal.

It was produced by two psychic criminal protilers who work closely with the FBI in America.

A spokesman for the McCanns said that although they were deeply sceptical of information from psychics, they want their private
investigators to examine the information which was broadcast.

"If they have given their files to the police in Portugal they should also pass them on to our investigators," said Clarence Mitchell, the McCanns spokesman, who gave a brief interview to the programme makers.

The programme says the man has a pronounced accent and looks and sounds Middle Eastern, possibly Egyptian, and drives a mid-sized dark silver car with a parking permit or some other identifying sticker inside the windscreen on the driver's side.

He 'may have been wearing a blue, button-up shirt and working as a transient labourer close to the apartment in Praia cia Luz on the Algarve where Madeleine was staying with her family before vanishing on May 3.

The report given to Portuguese police says the man is known as Steve or Stay and took the child to a summer rental apartment in the nearby village of Lagos.

The team, clairvoyant Carla Baron, psychic John J Oliver and
paranormal investigator Patrick Burns spent a week in Portugal, starting their inqµiries at the Ocean club resort where the McCanns had been staying.

Ms Baron said she immediately picked up on the vision of "Steve" or "Stav" stalking the family and photographing Madeleine at the beach before snatching her several days later.

Ms Baron said: "He snapped off a cell phone photo while looking like he was making a call.

"I also see him taking notes on a small notepad as he watched the comings and goings of the McCann family to see what their routine was."

When he finally pounced at night, while Madeleine's parents were in a nearby restaurant, Ms Baron and Mr Oliver said the little girl did not even wake up as he crept into the children's bedroom and picked her up.

Mr Oliver: "He took her to his car. There were people walking who saw him but he just looked as if he was a father carrying a sleeping child and they didn't take any notice."

They say the abductor placed Madeleine in the front passenger seat of his dark silver car, which may have had even darker or black trim.

Mr Oliver said he believes that the abductor may have stopped briefly at a deserted farmhouse east of the town before driving to his eventual destination - a furnished room rented out during the summer in nearby Lagos.

Executives at Tru Tv, part of media tycoon Ted Turner's CNN network, which makes the Haunting Evidence programme, passed the apartment address to police but withheld it from transmission.

The psychics say she was murdered there by being smothered by a pillow several days after her abduction because the man feared he would be caught.

Ms Baron believes the man then bundled her into the boot of his car and drove to a remote area, close to a landfill and manmade dam, where he buried her. This location has also been passed to police.

The FBI takes psychic evidence seriously and all three members of the Haunting Evidence team have been used in major criminal investigations.

However, the fact the latest information comes from a team of psychics and has just been screened on an American television programme does give pause for thought. What must never be forgotten is that a little girl vanished that night and no trace has ever been found. The search for Maddy must go on.

“Gerry was quite keen but Kate said, ‘I don’t know why, I’ve just got an uneasy feeling about it.’ “And I don’t know why she said that. I don’t think even she knows.” Fiona’s husband David, 42, said: “Kate didn’t feel quite easy about it.”

The details emerged during interviews given by the Tapas Seven — David, Fiona, her mum Dianne Webster, 64, Dr Russell O’Brien and his partner Jane Tanner, both 37, Dr Matthew Oldfield, 39, and his wife Rachael, 37. They spoke to cops in April at Enderby, Leics. The documents, which have been seen by The Sun, total more than 1,000 pages.

Asked how Kate appeared after Madeleine’s disappearance Fiona, an anaesthetist, said: “Awful. I’ve never seen such horrible raw emotion in my life and I’ve seen a lot of it in my job. “She was bereft. She didn’t know what to do, she was panicking, extremely frightened for Madeleine and was wondering where she was or what was happening to her.

"And the helplessness of not being able to do anything, what should she be doing, what could they do. “She was angry, really angry, punching walls, kicking walls. “The next day she was covered in bruises. She was angry at herself.

“She kept saying, ‘I’ve let her down. We’ve let her down, Gerry. We should have been here’. And she prayed a lot.” Husband David said: “Gerry broke down ... just a broken man. "He would fling a cupboard open and have a look in a vain, desperate hope she might have been there. “Then he flung himself on the floor and was just kicking the floor and was just, ‘She’s gone, she’s gone’.”

David’s mother-in-law Dianne said: “Gerry was distraught. I’ve never heard a man make the noises Gerry made.”

The interviews are in documents seen by The Sun. Maddie was snatched in Praia da Luz on May 3 last year, days before her fourth birthday.

Thousands of kids go missing each day — so why do we never seem to hear about the African-American children?

We only hear about Madeleine McCann. She is the benchmark for missing chidlren.

What do JonBenet Ramsey, Madeleine McCann, Elizabeth Smart and Polly Klaas all have in common?

They were all abducted by aliens? They all had six fingers on their left hand? They all liked pink?

They are all girls who have been abducted — or in the most tragic cases, killed — and they are all attractive white girls.

Spooky. Are photogenic white girls more likely to go missing, then?

The media has always seemed to only be interested in covering stories of white children who go missing — and pretty ones at that. Currently, Caylee Anthony fits that profile: doe-eyed with a winning smile. Despite ourselves when we first heard her story many of us thought, “Oh it’s so sad, she’s such a pretty little girl.”

Do we value one child above another?

But pretty and white are not the only children in peril, and are not the only ones who should have our attention. Nearly 800,000 children under the age of 18 are reported missing each year in the United States, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Of those reported missing, 33% are African-American. So where’s the 24/7 coverage of their stories?

Well, not all of the 800,000 are children. Not all stay missing. And not all of them are of a type of child that gels with the readers of national newspapers and the TV news.

One website is doing its part to at least try to fix the disparity. Black and Missing But Not Forgotten is dedicated to spreading awareness of missing African-American children. One post on the site “Caylee Anthony is Not the Only Missing Florida Toddler, ” tells the story of little Zenyetta Ra, who is also missing from the Tampa area, about 84 miles from the last known sighting of Caylee. “Zenyetta Ra is also missing”, says the site, “However, you won’t see Nancy Grace talking about her. Not even the local news.”

The website further exemplifies the bias by this statistic. A Google search on Caylee will garner about 600,000 results. “Can’t say the same for Zenyetta,” laments the website.

He was criticized, but throughout the many pages of the process, which is now relieved of judicial secrecy, there are questions made by PJ inspectors to the couple’s friends that have the purpose to clarify that issue. “The disappearance of a child must be seen as homicide, because it’s the most serious crime.”

A source that is close to Amaral said to 24Horas that the former inspector “wrote about what was in the process or what could be corroborated”, but that there are conversations, phone calls and episodes that were witnessed by the former policeman which may be fundamental to “bring the truth about the Maddie case into the world”.

The same source believes that the book and the film may expose new data and lead to the reopening of the process, which was archived and awaits “better evidence”. “He still has a policeman’s blood, he is still very aware of an education that prevents him from speaking. But now he has to do it in front of the cameras, in the name of a truth that he wants to see revealed”, the same source explains to 24Horas.

Amaral, who was sacked from the investigation in October 2007 for criticising British police, reiterates his belief that Maddie died in a "tragic accident" in the apartment in which she was sleeping the night she disappeared.

Portuguese authorities closed their investigation in July and lifted the "suspect" label from Maddie's parents due to lack of evidence.

Madeleine McCann went missing on May 3, 2007, days before her fourth birthday, from a holiday flat in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz as her parents dined at a nearby restaurant.

This summary obviously cannot cover every single point raised in the book but it covers most of the main points

1 - Gonçalo Amaral starts by thanking family and friends, anonymous citizens who supported him and also cybernauts and bloggers who 'defended the cause of truth and justice'.

2 - Very strange Mr Alipio Ribeiro's remark that making the McCanns arguidos was a hasty decision because he knew all along and agreed with the decision at the time.

3 - The British police agreed with the PJ that Madeleine had died in apartment 5A and that there was a body that needed to be found. Later things seemed to change.

4 - Making them arguidos was inevitable due to the non-incrimination principle. Certain questions could not be asked if they weren't arguidos. Even for their own protection.

5 - Unusual, priviliged treatment for the couple is stressed.

6 - The British police were working very closely with the PJ. They were in a room just next to the 'crisis room' the PJ worked in and were aware of everything that was going on.

11 - Contradiction regarding the checking times. Some say every 30 minutes, others say every 15 minutes. Gonçalo Amaral calls Glen Power for info on the whole group. Their history could be essential for the case.

12 - Inspector Chief Tavares de Almeida forgets his holiday because of the case. All Portuguese forces were now aware of the crime as well as Interpol. Searches start. The apartment had been contaminated by friends of the couple, employees from the resort, GNR officers and their dogs and other unknown people. Was the contamination out of ignorance or was it on purpose?

13 - Early in the morning, the searches continue. A crime scene team from Lisbon is on the way and the PJ starts to formally interview hundreds of people. The PJ asks British police for help regarding any British tourist present in the Algarve who may have a criminal record. Footage from hotels, banks, supermarkets, gas stations and highways are checked. Spain is alerted to pay attention to departures to Morocco. The harbours of Tarifa and Algeciras are checked through CCTV footage. Marinas in the Algarve are checked as well as their records of arrivals and departures.

14 - The PJ checks all photos and footage from the Tapas 9. Clues could be found there. However, there are no photos or footage at night which might have been useful to help understand what happened that evening. Sexual offenders are checked to make sure they weren't around PDL at the time and the criminal history of PDL is also investigated. No signs of a break in, unlike the McCanns and Sky News reported. The PM (Public Ministry) is informed of the situation. In the document the case is treated like a "Kidnapping?". Mr Amaral said the document is in the files and that as early as the 4th of May there were questions, which explains the question mark after 'kidnapping'.

15 - All possibilities were on the table. The abduction theory was good for the investigation, according to Mr Amaral because it allowed more means, manpower and tools to work with. It wasn't in the best interest of the investigation that the parents and friends were aware that they could be possible suspects. 12 hours after the disappearance a diplomat arrives in Portimao. He was not happy and he was heard to say that the PJ 'wasn't doing anything'.

16 - Info from the British police is late, unlike what normally happens in other cases. No information on the couple, the friends or the children. It was important to be sure that Madeleine was their biological daughter. British Ambassador arrives. All this diplomacy is not normal according to Mr Amaral. 'Who are this couple?'. 'Who are these friends?'.

17 - The searches go on. A helicopter is used and the OC employees are questioned. It's a battle against time because the following day /the 5th of May) is the day some of the potential witnesses are due to return to the UK. The press, Portuguese and British are already in PDL. Why was the press called in so quickly, apparently before the police?

18 - The apartment is checked for finger and hand prints, hair, fibres, blood and other biological evidence. Mistakes were made and Amaral underlines the person on the outside without a full suit on. No signs of break in and no prints of other people other than the ones who were supposed to have been at the apartment. No glove marks found either. A hand-print is found and also fingerprints on the window from where Madeleine was taken according to her parents. The hand-print belonged to one of the first GNR officers who arrived at the scene.

19 - The roadworks being done in the streets of PDL were checked by workmen, police officers and sniffer dogs. The Tapas are formally questioned in Portimão (it's still the morning of the 4th of May). First contradictions are detected. Jane Tanner 'saw' the abductor. Gerry and Jeremy were very close and did not see Jane or the abductor. The need for translation doesn't help because there is more time to think about what people should say. Kate and Gerry have no doubt that it is a kidnapping. Contradictions regarding the door and the window and shutters. (Open, closed, locked, unlocked, etc.)

20 - If the window was open why didn't Oldfield see it if at the time Jane Tanner had already seen the 'abductor'? Matthew says the door was slightly open. Kate states the door was completely open.

21 - Kate mentions the 'abductor' mentioned by Jane but describes him in a completely different way. Jane said the man had light trousers and hair the lenghth of his neck. Kate says the abductor was wearing jeans and had long hair.

22 - The description evolved. Now the abductor was 1.78 m tall, was wearing light trousers and a dark shirt and was carrying a child who seemed to be wearing pyjamas.

23 - Jane's decription evolves again: it is now a dark skinned man, 35-40, thin, around 1.70m, very thick and dark hair neck length, linen trousers beige or gold, Duffy' type jacket but not as thick, classic black shoes, was rushing and was carrying a child in a strange way. By the way the man was dressed, Jane said he didn't look like a tourist. The child was apparently sleeping and she only saw the legs. The child had no shoes on. Cotton pyjamas, light colour, possibly white or pink and maybe flowers on it. Jane said she would recognise the man from behind and by the way he walked.

24 - Jane said she didn't know what Madeleine was supposed to be wearing which surprised the police because 14 hours had passed and Gerry and Kate must have mentioned it, especially because Madeleine's description and clothes had been given to police officers, locals and tourists who were looking for the missing child.

25 - There is footage of a girl looking like Madeline in one gas station. The parents are informed and Kate is asked to return to Portimão to see if it is Madeleine or not. Instead of being full of hope, Kate looks bored for being forced to return to Portimão and seems angry at the speed of the police car which startled police officers.

26 - First press release on the case. Special authorisation has to be requested. Lots of info starts to arrive, especially info from 'psychics' and people who say they had visions and dreams about Madeleine. Although they aren't credible, they are checked everytime it's possible. Several sketches of Madeleine with different hair cuts and colour are done.

27 - On the 4th of May the PJ stays in PDL past 10:00pm because they want to observe the lighting conditions and other details. The police find it surprising that Jane was able to see all those details because it was already quite dark and the visibility is not good. Where did the 'abductor' take Madeline? Was there a car? If there was, why wouldn't anyone see it if the car had to be driven towards the centre of PDL? The beach was the most likely destination to anyone who would not wish to be seen. Gerry stated he entered the apartment using the main entance and using his key. Why? If the back entrance was a lot closer and it was apparently unlocked? Kate and Gerry say the aductor did not enter the apartment from the back entrance because they could see it from the Tapas bar and would have spotted him. That is a lie. And this lie is most likely intended to state that Madeleine and her twin brother and sister were safe and that there was no neglect. They were obviously not safe or Madeleine wouldn't be missing.

28 - Another strange aspect: The abductor enters through the door and leaves through the window carrying a child? Why not using the door again? It would be easier and it wouldn't be so suspicious. The police officers discuss their suspicions in the 'crisis' room. The pressure due to the media frenzy starts to kick in.

29 - Several statements about people acting in a strange way are checked. Some can be discarded but at least one cannot be fully investigated because in the meanwhile those people returned to their countries of origin. However, in that case it was possible to identify the flight and no sign of Madeleine. A gipsy camping site is also checked as well as more than 400 apartments and houses in PDL.

30 - The possibility of searching the Tapas groups apartments is discussed. The interest is to locate Madeleine's clothes, the ones which she was wearing that day to check them for evidence of violence, for instance. However, at this stage it is considered that treating the Tapas as suspects might not be good for the investigation. Mr Amaral considers this, at present, a mistake. But there was too much pressure to investigate the abduction scenario.

31 - It seemed like it was forbidden to suspect the Tapas 7 or the parents. Diplomacy was always around. Publicly the case is treated as a kidnapping to avoid media speculation, although all possibilities are being investigated by the police and many question arise. The media frenzy gets bigger and bigger. The PJ has difficulties dealing with that. At the same time the preoccupation of the McCanns in dealing with the press is noticed.

32 - The PJ keeps an eye on their public appearances. All info is being checked and the PJ starts working on the mobile phones info. No communications which arouse questions are detected, apart from Robert Murat who will later be made an arguido. The PJ check Kate and Gerry's phone records. Kate did not make any phone calls between the 27th April and the 4th of May which arouses suspicions. And hasn't received any between 11:22 on the 2nd of May and 23:17 of the 3rd. Gerry's phone has no record of calls before the 4th at 00:15. But there is a record on Kate's phone of a phone call from her husband on the 3rd May at 23:17. The same record doesn't exist on Gerry's phone. So the records were deleted. Why?

33 - An unconfirmed piece of news arrives at the PJ. Apparently the British secret services had, after the (whatever) crime, tapped the Tapas phones. If that was true the info was never sent to the PJ which also thought about tapping them but who feared the reaction if it was found out and also the refusal of the judge because at the time there wasn't strong reasons to do it.

34 - A bit of the life of the McCanns is described. Kate had a tiring life. Three children to take care of. Madeleine apparently wasn't an easy child. At the time of the holiday Kate was probably exhausted and had mentioned that before leaving for PDL she had a bad feeling/ an omen.

35 - The police found it strange that the children spent so much time in the créche but after interviewing the nannies they were told it was not a general rule but it was quite common with holidaymakers.

36 - Madeleine was at the créche the day she disappeared until 5:30pm. That was the last time anyone outside the group saw her. Madeleine was apparently very close to her dad and revealed an extreme love for her twin brother and sister.

37 - During July and one of Gerry's visits to England, a British Police officer visited him at home. On the fridge there was a piece of paper with some of Madeleine's problems written on it. Madeleine apparently had problems sleeping and used to get up at night quite often. It is mentioned that Madeleine's grandfather admitted that the children were given something to help them sleep. Mr Amaral says this can explain why the twins did not wake up and that it also may have been the basis of Madeleine's tragic faith.

38 - Madeleine's health records were really important and were asked for with insistence. However, they were not sent. Historically, in these types of siuations, apparently the UK is not very cooperative. And the secrecy between doctors and patients was also a setback. Her eye detail may be related to other health problems but without medical records it was not able to confirm this.

39 - The 7th of May. Leicester police officers start to arrive. Later, Scotland Yard also cooperated. Several leads are pursued, 'suspects' found but discarded. Lots of Madeleine sightings. Lots of checking regarding Madeleine sighting. The Morocco saga starts. Mr Amaral talks about the photo of the little girl in Morocco who supposedly looked like Madeleine. Mr Amaral was informed and diligencies to confirm it were done. But Mr Amaral said that he stated it wasn't Madeleine.

40 - The McCanns were at the time of the Morocco sighting already arguidos and both the British and the Portuguese police agreed that Madeleine was dead. However, something strange happened. The British police had shown the McCanns the photo before informing the PJ about its existence. Apparently a British police officer showed them the photo, asked them if it was Madeleine and the McCanns answered: 'It could be'. Gonçalo Amaral was surprised that they weren't sure. After all it was their daughter. We all know how this ended. The child and her mother were identified and it wasn't Madeleine.

41 - 23rd of May: according to Mr Amaral the McCanns contacted Gordon Brown on that day and the PJ knew for sure that now this would be a political case, not a police one.

42 - A man, apparently British who has an Asian background, spotted in a photo with Murat and also in a photo where Gerry is in a park with the children is investigated. Info is collected and the British police check him out and get an identification. He is discarded as not having anything to do with Madeleine and as being in the park with his own daughter and then helping in the searches like hundreds of other tourists. The photo of the man reached the British press. Mr Amaral says he has no idea how it got to the UK papers and why it was published.

43 - One of the tourists told the PJ that he had heard Gerry McCann speaking on the phone and saying that there are paedophile rings operating in Portugal and that they took Madeleine. Mr Amaral says it's fantastic that after some hours the father of a missing child knows what happened to her with such certainty.

44 - It was thought to do the reconstruction in May but that wasn't possible. The number of tourists, the number of journalists and the fact that the air space had to be closed (because of helicopters from the media) and the fact that it would make the public suspect the McCanns were being treated as suspects prevented it.

45 - Mr Amaral thinks that the reconstruction should have been made even one year after and even with the parents only, who were the ones who couldn't refuse to come. He believes it would be helpful.

46 - A Dutch guy contacts the McCanns saying he wants money in exchange for Madeleine/info about Madeleine's whereabouts. The police get involved (PJ, Leicester Police and Scotland Yard). The e-mail exchange continues. The guy wants two million and 500 thousand in advance. All are stressed. All but Gerry who was enjoying a lollipop, reading trivialities on the internet and discussing rugby and football with a British police officer, which surprised the Portuguese and the British police. The guy was arrested and only wanted money. He confessed he knew nothing about Madeleine.

To explain Gerry's cold ways a British officer usually commented with his Portuguese counterparts: "Don't forget the guy starts cutting people in half after breakfast."

47 - Several police officers from several police forces arrive as well as specialists in different areas and profilers. On the 14th of May Kate felt very offended with the liaison officers because they asked her where her daughter was. The McCann couple would not tolerate those questions and doubts. Those liaison officers' job was to make a bridge between the parents and the PJ and support the parents in any way they needed, However, it didn't last a week. After those questions the McCanns decided they did not need them anymore. No one could doubt those parents, let alone officers from their own country, writes Mr Amaral.

48 - A Portuguese PJ officer leaves for the UK to help Leicester police triage info. Three Leicester police officers have a meeting in Portimão with Luís Neves, Guilhermino Encarnação and Gonçalo Amaral. The PJ is informed about the 'incident' between the McCanns and the liason officer(s). As time went by the PJ realised that the theory most pursued in Portugal (Madeleine's death) was not known by everyone in Leicester. A 'rookie' British police officer arrived in the Algarve and was wearing the 'Look for Madeleine' wristband. Portuguese PJ's commented that soon he would not be wearing it anymore, which happened as soon as he came into contact with the files.

49 - Mr Amaral gets a phone call from his scared wife. Somebody had killed one of the family dogs, a Shitzu who had a serious head injury. Mr Amaral went home but was in a hurry because he needed to go back to work and didn't want his children to see the dog like that. He decided that he should bury the dog but the ground was too hard. So he decided to take the dog and put it in the trash bin. While doing so he couldn't help think how easy it was for someone to dispose of a dead body. Amaral's wife asks him to leave the investigation because she is scared. Mr Amaral tells his wife she is not being rational and that there are no reasons to be worried.

50 - Murat's story. His villa drew attention because it was very close to the crime scene and because apparently the abductor was seen walking in that direction. Amaral decides to check and is surprised when a colleague tells him that Murat offered to translate at the scene if it was necessary, since he spoke both English and Portuguese. The police had to resort to volunteers due to the amount of tourists and employees (hundreds) that had to be spoken to, even if informally in the beginning. The PJ starts to check him out, especially after the British journalist's suspicion. The PJ decide that it will be better if they keep him close and continue to use him as a volunteer translator. Murat seems interested in everything regarding the investigation. He is said to consult internet sites of a sexual nature, but no more details are known. British profilers start working on him and seem interested.

51 - Murat is watched. The rental of a car is investigated and the villa and cars are searched. Jane Tanner incriminates Murat. No signs of Madeleine. Murat's clothes and other objects are collected to be analysed.

52 - Murat made an arguido, declines lawyer. Answers all questions. The question of the phone calls between Murat, Malinka and Michaela is investigated. Apparently the three met on the 2nd May because of the internet site.

53 - Several suspicions arise regarding Murat, Michaela, Malinka and Luís António. They are all investigated. No signs of Madeleine anywhere. After a pseudo friend of Murat from teenage times incriminates him for bestiality and other stange behaviours British profilers say that there's a 90% chance that Murat is Madeleine's abductor. The 'pseudo friend' apparently has a long criminal record and the PJ was not very convinced by his statement.

54 - Suddenly, on the 16th May, some friends of the McCanns remember seeing Murat on the scene that night close to the apartment. GNR officers said that they only saw him the next morning when he offered to translate. Rachel, Fiona, Russel and Murat are put face to face. The Tapas say Murat was there. Murat says they're lying. The Tapas say that they will come back to Portugal if needed.

55 - The Smiths see a man carrying a child wearing pink or white pyjamas and no shoes. The child has got medium/long blonde hair. The man is between 30-35, is thin but fit and wears light trousers. Mr Smith contacts the Irish Police and tells them about that. He states the man is not Murat but the girl was most likely Madeleine.

56 - The Payne incident, regarding sexual gestures, is described. The statement was given to the British police 13 days after Madeleine went missing but was only sent to the PJ by the end of October after Amaral left.

Payne's visit to apartment 5A on the 3rd of May: Gerry said Payne stayed 30 minutes, Kate said it was 30 seconds. The reasons for the visit and number of visitors also have different versions. Yvone, with experience in children matters, gets to talk to the McCanns and asks several questions which annoy Kate who believes the police should be asking the questions not Yvone. Kate also says that a couple took her child and cries a lot. The McCanns refuse Yvone's help after contradicting themselves more.

57 - The room seems too tidied up and too cold. Everything in the right place. No signs of an abductor who would have needed to use something to get out of the window. No footprints anywhere, nothing. Suspicions of an intentional modification of the crime scene. According to Kate, Cudle Cat was close to the pillow when she found Madeleine missing. The bed sheets of the twins' cots were not there.

58 - The Tapas wrote two lists which are on the files with the times of the checking until the alarm was raised. Inconsistencies in those two lists also. As soon as the alarm is raised, everyone rushed and entered the apartment but Dianne Webster stays for some minutes.

59 - The two different lists prove that the checking timelines were discussed. In order to escape the neglect accusations, the checking times were so close that they made the abduction virtually impossible. Mathew was supposed to have twice passed close to the window through which Madeleine had already been taken and yet fails to see the window wide open, although his mission was to check if everything was ok with the kids.

60 - Both police forces discuss the huge amount of inconsistencies.

61 - Jane also never mentioned the window completely opened.

62 - How could Kate leave the twins alone again with a window supposedly open with an abductor close by?

In the beginning of June, Kate starts taking about the possibility of Madeleine's death and about contacts made by psychics who claimed they knew where Madeleine's body was. Mr Amaral said that it almost seemed like Kate could soon say where Madeleine's body was even if in an indirect way.

63 - The McCanns ask for Mr Krugel, the South African body-finder to come to PDL. Both police forces thought the idea was a bit ridiculous but didn't want to be accused of not doing everything. The couple would now admit that Madeleine could be dead unlike what they were publicly, and still are, claiming. The area where Krugel said Madeleine's body would be had already been searched by GNR and their dogs but it was searched again. Nothing was found.

64 - Amaral describes a case he investigated where a 3-year old was beaten to death by her father. He describes what a police officer but also a father feels in such a situation and discusses the possible motive, generally speaking, which may lead people to hide a body.

65 - Amaral also underlines the difficulty in investigating cases of missing people and cases with no body. The British specialist dogs are suggested and they come to PDL. As we all know, they detect death scent and blood.

66 - Mark Harrison analyses the whole file, visits PDL on foot and in an helicopter and writes a report in which he states that Madeleine is most likely dead and her body most likely hidden in PDL. He also praises the PJ for all the work and efforts to try and find Madeleine alive but thinks it is now time to do different searches, the searches needed to find a body.

67 - It was now time to investigate parents and friends in a more serious manner. The impressive record of Eddie and Keela is described.

68 - The dogs are taken to apartment 5A and, as we know, detect death scent and blood, Around 10:00 pm Gerry is seen by the investigators driving around. Nothing was detected by the dogs in any of the other apartments. The history of apartment 5A was checked because another person could have died there before. No one did which was sadly revealing. The death scent dog was taken to the field. Nothing was found. The police were now sure the biggest mistake was not to tap the Tapas' phones and not to follow them closely. A judge refuses the request for the phones to be tapped. The villa where the McCanns were now staying was searched by the dogs. The dog detects death scent on Cuddle Cat.

69 - Nothing is found in Murat's villa. But the garden is so badly dug that it is found the house was built on the top of an ancient roman village. The cars are checked. The dog only reacts on the car hired by the McCanns. After Amaral left the investigation, he came to know that a witness, a Portuguese woman, stated that in the days before the cars were checked the trunk of the car was left open which family explained was because of soiled nappies and beef fluid that was spilled in the car after they went shopping once

70 - Mr Amaral tells us that the decision to send the blood and hair to FSS in the UK was because it was a renowned laboratory and because if they were analysed in Portugal or elsewhere, the PJ feared some would say the results had been messed with to incriminate the arguidos in case the results were clear. The most likely possibility is that Madeleine apparently died near the sofa.

71 - Mr Amaral said that the assessment of the house showed two different realities. Kate seemed in mourning. Several pictures from Madeleine, rosaries, saints and a bible marked on Samuel's Book, Chapter 12, about the death of a child. Gerry's 'part' of the space was colder. Gerry seemed to have been reading The Interpretation of Crime from Jed Rubenfeld, Spirit Messenger by Gordon Smith and Will to Live by Lance Armstrong. Besides that, there were also several CEOP books which are only for police work, which startled Mark Harrison.

72 - The first results start to arrive. The blood found in the car has a 50% match with Gerry coming, most likely, from an offspring. Then, one of the samples comes back as a weak match to Madeleine, in spite of all the markers in the sample being a match, many markers were missing. The second sample, however, had a 15 out of 19 marker match to Madeleine's DNA profile. Another preliminary report is sent that contradicts the first findings. For example, regarding the trunk sample there is, this time, no mention about the 15 components of Madeleine's DNA profile, like they never existed. Stuart Prior then calls FSS asking if they thought the Portuguese were idiots. He was heard saying that in the UK he had arrested people for less.

73 - As for the hair, apparently nothing came of it. The PJ wanted to know if they came from a living person or a dead one. FSS said they could not answer that question. British officers suggested sending the hairs to other labs in Europe but FSS apparently didn't want to lose/ give the hairs back.

The only fingerprints found on the window belonged to Kate. Because of the position of the hand it's more than likely that they got there when Kate opened that window, whenever that happened.

74 - The time of the questioning of the McCanns is close and Stuart Prior seems nervous. The PJ also wished to re-question the whole group. Very little info on the McCanns arrives regarding their financial situation. According to UK authorities the McCanns have no credit card or ATM cards. However, the flights had been paid with credit cards so the PJ knew they had them.

75 - Mr Amaral says that if the McCanns were in any way responsible for what happened to Madeleine then the fund would be a fraud. As the fund was set up in England it would have to be investigated by the British police.

76 - The McCanns were informed about the re-questioning and that they would be made arguidos, even for their own protection. Kate replied asking what would her parents and the press think and say.

77 - Kate's re-questioning was interrupted from 8pm till 10pm for all involved to rest and have dinner. As soon as she is made an arguida, Kate shuts up. Gerry is made an arguido, answers his questions and denies any involvment. The McCanns go back to England and when they arrive and go down the plane's steps Mr Smith in Ireland regonises Gerry as the man he had seen carrying a child on that night. He contacts the police but when his return to Portugal is being taken care of Mr Amaral is removed from the investigation. Afterwards, the next person in charge of the case decides that Mr Smith can be interviewed in his country through a rogatory letter. (This never happened).

78 - Mr Amaral discusses the fact that he was removed from the case. Portual seemed to have succumbed to the pressure. The information on the McCanns and other Tapas never arrived. Amaral says that both police forces agreed on the path the investigation took but that after the McCanns left all British police officers left too. So, were they here to help with the invstigation or were they here because of the McCanns. Find the body and prove we did it is also mentioned as well as the McCanns need to discredit the dogs.

Along the way Mr Amaral neighbour's house is broken into and some documents are stolen. The hasty answer to the journalist, which was used to remove him from the case is also mentioned. Amaral says that he knew immediately it had been a mistake but that he never knew how serious it would be because his words were greatly exagerated. Amaral is removed on his birthday and later he knows that Gordon Brown apparently called Stuart Prior to ask him if the man in charge of the investigation had really been removed.

79 - May 2008. Amaral shares a meal with his colleague Tavares Rodrigues. The Madeleine case comes up and both comment on the fact that their case is all on the files and nothing can change that.

CONCLUSIONS:

- Madeleine McCanns died in aprtment 5A on May the 3rd 2007.

- There was a simulation/fake of an abduction.

- Kate and Gerry are suspects in the involvement of the disposal of their daughter's body.

- Madeleine's death may have been caused by a tragic accident.

- There is evidence of negligence regarding the guard and security of the children.

Then, Amaral says they did the best they could and worked hard to find out the truth. The truth which is the only thing that really matters in a universe which makes the truth of the lie more and more common.

Portugal's Channel 3 confirmed he was making a documentary for them — after already coining it with a book about the case earlier this year. The McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell fumed: "He seems determined to make as much as he can out of Madeleine. He should be ashamed."

Amaral was kicked off the case after accusing doctors Kate and Gerry, both 40, of killing Madeleine, of Rothley, Leics. He repeated the slur in his book The Truth Of The Lie. The TV film will be screened on May 3 next year — the second anniversary of Maddie's disappearance.

Mr Mitchell raged: "It's beyond bad taste." A local in Praia da Luz, where Maddie vanished, said of the TV film: "It's sick.

Anthony Bennett has written to Anorak numerous times. Surely, if the McCanns sue him, they will give him the day in court he craves?

Madeleine’s Law sounds like a unworkable project, something that has no chance of ever being approved let alone policed effectively.

And who is Tony Bennet, the man who likes a cause celebre? Is he worth the McCanns’ bother? Say they do sue him and win. Then what? Is he a man of substance or a man of straw? Will it raise money for Our Maddie or deplete the family’s fund? Will it just make Bennett famous?

His website attacks doctors Kate and Gerry McCann, both 41, over the disappearance of Maddie, now five, from their holiday flat in Portugal last year.

Indeed it has. He is not without his supporters.

McCann spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “Our lawyers are watching him. They are constantly monitoring his claims, which we consider are libellous.”

It all sounds not a little threatening. The McCanns are innocent but can they make it so no-one dares to raise an objection or a critical voice? What good can come of suing a man who says the McCanns failed their child? And haven’t the parents already blamed themselves for not taking enough care?

A legal source close to the McCanns, of Rothley, Leics, said: “They are more than annoyed and deeply offended. They say enough is enough. All they are trying to do is get their daughter back.”

But how do Bennett’s claims of neglect prevent the safe return to Madeleine McCann?

Portuguese officer who led the search for Madeleine says his account defends the honour of his team

A controversial best-selling account of the hunt for Madeleine McCann by the Portuguese detective who led the investigation is expected to be published in the UK soon, according to its author.

Speaking exclusively to The Independent on Sunday, Goncalo Amaral denied cashing in on the tragic disappearance of the three-year-old but said he was determined to restore his reputation, which "had been torn to shreds" by unfair and inaccurate media reports.

The book, Maddie: The Truth about the Lie, has already sold an estimated 180,000 copies in Europe, and Mr Amaral's representatives are trying find a British publisher. The McCanns said last night that they would scrutinise any British publication with a view to possible legal action.

Madeleine went missing on 3 May 2007, days before her fourth birthday, from a holiday apartment in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz as her parents dined at a nearby restaurant. In the Portuguese edition of his book, Mr Amaral says he believes she died in a "tragic accident" in the Mark Warner holiday flat where she was left to sleep the night she disappeared.

Mr Amaral was removed from the investigation in October 2007 after criticising British police officers. Nine months later the Portuguese authorities closed the investigation and lifted the arguido [suspect] label from Madeleine's parents.

The book's publisher, Mario Sena Lopes, said there was now an English version of Mr Amaral's book and he was negotiating a UK deal. He said several publishers were interested and he was confident the British public would soon be able to read the book.

Mr Amaral said: "I received numerous messages of support and solidarity since being taken off the case, including from the UK – messages that also motivated me to tell people what I knew about the Maddie case. I am positive that there's also a section of the public eager to know the truth.

"People can form their opinion without the manipulation that we have seen before."

He said his only regret was failing to carry out a reconstruction of the events soon after Madeleine vanished but claims he was put under "serious pressure" not to. He insisted this was the only failure in a "perfect" text-book investigation.

Asked whether he thought Madeleine was dead, he said: "It is not just my opinion. A whole team of Portuguese and British investigators came to that conclusion last year, and this is part of the files. I have never said the couple killed their daughter and this is not my belief. Deaths may happen for natural reasons, accident or intervention by a third party."

He said he was unperturbed by the threat of any legal action from the McCann family. "There is no reason for that. The details exposed in the book are facts, happenings and objective data which figure in the process and not lies, as they have been described in the press."

He denied he was profiting from the tragic case. "The biggest thing I achieved with this book was to defend my honour and that of those who worked with me. The way I see it, you cannot put a price on dignity. The other objective of the book is to contribute to the search for the truth."

Mr Amaral added that he is now considering legal action against a number of British media outlets. The "excessive" publicity the case attracted was a "double-edged sword: on one hand it makes the disappearance known, but on the other hand it puts the life of the missing person in jeopardy," he insisted. "I demanded from my superiors, they stand up for the investigators faced with attacks by the media, but that never happened. This was one of the reasons that led me later on to hand in my resignation so I could regain my freedom of speech and write the book."

Clarence Mitchell, a spokesman for the McCanns, said last night: "Lawyers for Kate and Gerry have been aware of what Mr Amaral has been alleging for some time. What he has said and written before now is grossly defamatory of them.

"If he chooses to publish them in Britain those words will be studied intensely carefully and they will not hesitate to act if they are defamatory."

Zoals eerder gepost, er is geen enkele medewerking geweest van de ouders en hun vakantievrienden. Wát ze hebben verteld klopt onderling van geen kanten. Tijdens het onderzoek mochten ze niks vertellen op straffe van een arrestatie, behalve dan het besmeuren van de Portugese politie, maar toen eenmaal de status van verdachte van de McCanns was opgeheven wilde nog steeds niemand ook maar iets kwijt. Tot op de dag vandaag is het een Pact of Silence.

Opvallend is ook hoeveel connecties/vrienden ze in de UK hebben met mensen die er toedoen, dat is erg handig gebleken, maar dan is het toch vreemd dat de UK-pers niets negatiefs over dit gebeuren publiceerde en nog steeds. Zeker op blogs en fora wordt daarover heftig gedissuseerd, zijn er meerdere belangen in het geding, wat moet er ten alle tijden verborgen blijven? PM Gordon Brown is vanaf het begin bij deze kwestie betrokken, Gerry McCann is bevriend met zijn broer, kan zijn dat dit een grote fout is gebleken maar je steun terugtrekken lijkt niet meer te kunnen, dat zou maar verdacht zijn. Dan maar het onderzoek traineren, er staan immers grote economische belangen op het spel (iets wat ik eerder heb gepost, het doodarme Portugal, wat veelal afhankelijk is van toerisme, kan zich niks permitteren, het was al zo beschadigd door de McCanns zelf en de UK-pers, er werd massaal afgeraden naar Portugal te gaan.

Anyway, zelfs de Ierse The Herald vraagt zich af waarom nu pas tijdens deze kerst, de video is te zien waarin Madeleine's stem is te horen: "It seems strange that they’ve left it so long to release this footage. After all, maybe someone could have recognised her from the sound of her voice?"

Bovendien zou een celebrity of een bekend Sportfiguur meewerken aan deze kerstoproep: "Mr Mithcell said Christmas would be a private affair for the McCanns this year. There are, however, plans to issue a worldwide television appeal to jog people's minds over the festive season. Niets van gezien, zeker niemand kunnen vinden die zijn/haar handen wil branden, want neglect is hier zeker aan de hand. Wel zijn de McCanns bezig met kettingbrieven, en kan men posters van Madeleine downloaden, om overal op te hangen, zoals op hun site is te lezen. Ook dit: "Reassuringly, we know that there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever to suggest that Madeleine has been seriously harmed (and this has been further confirmed after studying the recently released Portuguese police files). In light of this, we passionately believe that there is a very strong likelihood that Madeleine is out there and can be found." Dus hou Madeleine levend, alleen dat levert geld op natuurlijk...

The MPs are expected to ask Mr McCann, 40, why he and his wife Kate, 41, chose to sue a number of British newspapers for defamation instead of going through regulatory body the Press Complaints Commission.

In March last year Express Newspapers agreed to pay the couple £550,000 in libel damages over false allegations that they were responsible for their daughter's death.

Madeleine was nearly four when she went missing from her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, southern Portugal, on May 3, 2007, while her parents dined with friends nearby.

Despite a massive police operation and huge publicity worldwide, she has not been found.

Mr Mosley, 68, president of motorsport governing body the FIA, won £60,000 in privacy damages against the News of the World last year over a story claiming he took part in a "sick Nazi orgy".

He has announced plans to challenge the UK's privacy laws in the European Court of Human Rights to require British newspapers to notify people before publishing private information about them.

Mr Mosley will give evidence to the committee on Tuesday morning, followed by Mr McCann in the afternoon.

At a meeting yesterday, Gerry McCann told politicians that the "most damning thing of all" was newspapers' claims there was a host of evidence that suggested the little girl was dead.

Madeleine, who would now be five, went missing on May 3, 2007, from her family's apartment in the resort of Praia Da Luz, Portugal.
Her father was giving evidence to a Parliamentary inquiry into press standards being run by the Commons Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee.
He told members that he believed the person who had taken his daughter might have been given an advantage over police after details of the investigation were revealed in the Press.
Mr McCann said: "There's information related to a crime that you don't want to be made public.
"Only the witnesses that were there will know that information.
"It concerned me greatly that elements of the timeline were becoming increasingly apparent through leaks and a desire to have every single bit of information known."
Mr McCann described how, at the start of his family's ordeal, the media had seemed friendly, but he and wife Kate soon realised that much of the coverage was becoming speculative.
He said when the couple were given "arguido" status – essentially being made suspects by Portuguese police – some journalists treated the situation as a "free for all".
Mr McCann said the media became much more interested in him and Kate than in the search for Madeleine.
But he also said he still needed the Press to help find his daughter when there was "information that is relevant and may assist with the search".

A few minutes after the return to Faro of the team of experts that the PJ had sent to Leicester, Her Majesty's British Ambassador, John Buck, to the Portuguese Republic was already visiting their premises. The presence of the diplomat, that has been confirmed by several journalist, is in direct relation with the Madeleine McCann case and was not asked by the Portuguese Authorities. A British diplomat warned the Foreign Office of concerns regarding Mad­eleine McCann’s parents, it emerged last night. Doubts about Kate and Gerry McCann were raised almost immediately by an official sent to Praia da Luz due to what he considered to be “inconsistencies” in the couple’s testimonies about the night the four-year-old vanished. The warning was contained in a classified document sent from the Algarve to the Foreign Office days after Madeleine’s disappearance. Details of the letter have been leaked through the British diplomatic mission in Brussels to the respected Belgian newspaper Derniere Heure.

The unnamed diplomat voices his concern about the “confused declarations” as to the whereabouts of Kate and Gerry McCann and their friends in the final hours before Madeleine’s disappearance. He also mentions the couple’s “lack of co-operation” with the Portuguese police in the light of instructions from London suggesting consular staff “overstretch their authority and put pressure on the Portuguese authorities”. The document also asks for confirmation of orders sent by the Foreign Office in London the day before, commanding embassy staff to give “all possible assistance to the McCann couple”.

Diplomats on the Algarve were told the McCanns had to be “accompanied at all times during any contact with the Portuguese police” by a member of consular staff or by British police officers sent out from the UK. The letter, sent just days after Madeleine disappeared, warns of the risks of siding with the McCanns so completely. Excerpts published in a report by La Derniere Heure quote the diplomat as saying: “With the greatest respect, I would like to make you aware of the risks and implications to our relationship with the Portuguese authorities, if you consider the possible involvement of the couple. “Please confirm to me, in the light of these concerns, that we want to continue to be closely involved in the case as was requested in your previous ­message.”

A huge team of diplomats have been involved in the case since Gerry McCann asked the Foreign Office for help. In an unprecedented move, the then Prime Minister Tony Blair despatched special envoy Sheree Dodd, a former Fleet Street journalist, to Portugal to act as a “med­ia liaison officer” for the McCann family. Direct government communications with the McCanns came to an abrupt halt, however, when the couple were made official suspects in the case in September.

Portuguese detectives believe it is possible Madeleine died as the result of an accident on May 3 in the family’s holiday apartment and that her parents hid and later disposed of her body with the help of their friends. The couple have always said they had nothing to do with their daughter’s disappearance. The Belgian report says it is highly significant that almost all of the diplomats involved at the outset have now been taken off the case.

Special envoy Sheree Dodd has since resigned from the Foreign Office, the British consul in the Algarve Bill Henderson has retired and the British ambassador to Portugal John Buck is no longer in Portugal. Last night the Foreign Office refused to comment on the report.

FCO added that, at the time of the internal review (December 2007), the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann had been ongoing and that, for legal reasons, it had not been possible to disclose further information then.

FCO told the Commissioner that, although the Portuguese authorities had released many documents about the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, sensitivities remained and FCO believed that the section 27(1)(a)* exemption still applied. If FCO were to disclose all the details about HM Ambassador’s contact with the Portuguese police they would risk damaging the relationship on which good inter-governmental co-operation was based.

"Experience also shows that people almost always confide in someone else.

"Someone in Praia da Luz may have been given information that should be passed on and now is the perfect opportunity to do just that."

Information can be provided to the McCanns' private investigation team anonymously by telephone, email, text message or free post, and will be treated in confidence.

The family have recently launched a fresh appeal for members of the public based in the area to come forward with any information they may have relating to her disappearance.

The campaign has been arranged to coincide with the second anniversary of the date Madeleine went missing, May 3rd.

A new appeal for information was launched this week but some residents on the Algarve have reacted angrily to the move.

Ana Palma, a reporter for the Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha, said: “We went to Praia da Luz trying to find the posters but most of the small ones had been removed, there were only five or six left. We then started to ask people what had happened and they told us they are tired of this. They feel they and their businesses have been harmed and they want closure.”

They want to forget.

The announcement of a television interview with the couple has even surprised the British professionals in the sector, as earlier this month, Madeleine’s father had issued violent criticism against the work of English and Portuguese journalists, in front of a parliamentary commission. After refusing to cooperate with the PJ in the official inquest into their daughter’s disappearance, Kate and Gerry, already as arguidos, abandoned Portugal with the assistance of diplomatic representatives of the United Kingdom in our country. An escape that was recorded and broadcast live by various television channels.

The McCanns stopped being arguidos when the Public Ministry decided to archive the process, which currently awaits better evidence, after Gonçalo Amaral left and the process was handed over to Paulo Rebelo, who did nothing to pursue the line of inquiry that had been opened in the first months of the investigation, as the PJ’s final report proves.

Several diligences remained to be carried out, including the reconstitution of the gestures and movements of the nine English adults who accompanied Maddie in Praia da Luz and who, according to their own statements to Portuguese and British authorities, were always very contradictory. Several Spanish, English and Irish witnesses were never heard in the process.

A month before the second anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance, Gerry McCann, the little English girl's father, arrived yesterday evening at Lisbon airport for a 48-hour visit.

During his stay, Gerry McCann will follow the filming of a "kind of" mini reconstitution of what allegedly happened on the night that Maddie disappeared. The filming is made by ITV, that intends to record a documentary and counts on a group of actors who will play the roles of the nine British citizens: Kate, Gerry McCann and the other members of the Tapas group.

According to the couple's spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, Madeleine's father allegedly also comes to follow the couple's ongoing private investigations on the terrain.

"Gerry is not going to meet the PJ or any member of the Portuguese authorities", Clarence told 24horas.

The couple's spokesman, now also working for a communications and public relations company, further promised that during Gerry's visit to Praia da Luz, the media would be offered "relevant news" concerning the search for Maddie.

Clarence Mitchell refused to confirm or deny the presence of private investigators in Praia da Luz, but 24horas knows that during last week, while the campaign was ongoing, at least two former members of the English police visited the locations where supposedly Maddie was abducted from.

As 24horas had published already, Gerry McCann returned to Portugal alone because "Kate is not ready yet".

Yesterday evening, Maddie's father travelled directly to the Algarve, after being greeted by members of the British embassy, who awaited him on his arrival.

Clarence Mitchell confirmed to 24horas that "just like Gerry had announced a few weeks ago, during his first visit, this is just one more visit", and other visits are scheduled, with "the purpose of searching for Maddie", according to the couple's spokesman.

A source at the Polícia Judiciária in Portimão confirmed that Maddie's father's visit to our country is being watched closely, yet lamented that the couple didn't carry it out at "the time when the inquiry demanded it".

The population of Praia da Luz, which is upset by the campaign that has been carried out in that area of the Algarve, fails to understand the visit's purpose: "They did nothing to help the police and ended up fleeing this place like criminals", Rui Macedo told 24horas, adding that "they won't rest until they destroy our region".

But Gerry McCann isn't the only one returning to Portugal, as 24horas was able to establish that several other persons who intervened in the Maddie case are in our country at the moment.

THE beach is not busy, but it is healthily populated with spring sun-seekers lazing on the golden sands before the summer rush. The promenade-front bars and cafes hum with business as diners bask in the warmth of a late Algarve morning. The pretty fishing village of Praia da Luz is occupied with doing what it does best – providing holidaymakers from across Europe with a lazy vacation on one of the continent's most stunning coastlines.

Only inside the picturesque white-painted Catholic church of Nossa Senhora Da Luz, now so familiar from thousands of TV news bulletins and newspaper photographs, is there any sign that two years ago next Sunday the small community, residents and visitors alike, were hit by a cataclysmic event from which it has not yet fully recovered.

At the side of the altar is a poolside picture of Madeleine McCann, taken in the happy days before she disappeared from her resort bedroom on the evening of May 3. Lit by the reflected light flame of candles, it says simply: "Pray For Me."

On Sunday, as he did last year on the first anniversary of her disappearance, Father Haynes Q Hubbard, senior chaplain of the church where Madeleine's doctor parents Kate and Gerry McCann came to seek solace in the long weeks after their daughter went missing just 10 days before her fourth birthday, will hold a second "service of hope" in both Portuguese and English.

Haynes, understandably weary of fielding questions from journalists around the world, said last week it is the only thing he feels he can do: "We are doing it because nothing here has changed. It is two years on and Madeleine is still missing. But we should keep her memory alive."

More than 700 days since Madeleine disappeared from an apartment at the Ocean Club and from beside her sleeping younger brother and sister while her parents ate with friends in a Tapas bar just yards away, an answer to the mystery is yet to be uncovered.

This is despite one of the biggest searches for a missing child in history, involving hundreds of police and private detectives and an army of media from around the globe. No one involved in the case seems to be any wiser about what happened to Madeleine than they were in the minutes after she vanished, allegedly spirited away by an unknown abductor.



This weekend, the couple are in the US to record a one-hour special interview with Oprah Winfrey to be broadcast on May 3. Kate and Gerry will be quizzed by the US TV star in front of a live audience as part of their global campaign to keep Madeleine's name and image alive and to persuade police forces around the world to adopt more streamlined methods for issuing alerts when a young child goes missing.

Then, on May 7, Channel Four will broadcast a filmed reconstruction of the events of two years ago, in which 15 actors have been hired to play the parts of the principal characters. The crew and actors were given full access to the Mark Warner-run Ocean Club to make the film. A computer-enhanced image of what Madeleine could look like at age six has also been produced by forensic computer specialists used by the FBI to coincide with the broadcast. The angelic innocence remains along with the distinctive pigmentation stripe in her right eye that may, unfortunately, fade with age.

So, in the past two years has the McCanns' campaign on improving child safety achieved any results? And how long can such a campaign be sustained in the face of dwindling cash reserves?

In Praia da Luz, there is little open hostility to the McCanns, but feelings nevertheless run high among both the large expatriate community and local Portuguese residents who depend on tourism for a living. They feel that the media spotlight should be turned away from their village.

One English bar owner who helped in the initial search for the three-year-old girl, but did not want his name used, said: "We have to move on. Of course, everyone still has sympathy for the family; no-one is indifferent to what happened. How could you be? But we don't want Praia to be evermore associated with what happened. This was a nice and safe place before she went missing and it is a nice, safe place now.

"We all lost some business in the year after it happened and we did well to get through it. Our main problem now is the strength of the euro, so we don't really need any more negative publicity."

Images of missing Madeleine are now hard to find in the town. "There are a couple of billboards out at the moment linked with the TV reconstruction, but that's about it."

One sited on the main road into the village was defaced just one day after being erected. Paint was splattered across the poster and the Find Madeleine campaign number was obscured. When Gerry McCann visited earlier this month, along with Jane Tanner and Matthew Oldfield, two members of the 'Tapas Seven', to advise on the reconstruction, it was reported that Madeleine's father was heckled by former Ocean Club employees who had lost their jobs due to a downturn in trade.

Concerns over money are also besetting the Find Madeleine campaign. On his first return visit to Praia da Luz since his and his wife's official "arguido" suspect status was lifted last year, Gerry McCann revealed that the fund was running out. Earlier this year, newspaper reports said the fund had dipped to £600,000.

"There's still money in it," McCann said. "It won't dry up in the next few months, but probably by the end of the year at the rate we are running."

The published accounts from last year detail where the money, swelled by a £550,000 libel payment from a group of British newspapers found to have defamed the couple and a £375,000 award to the Tapas Seven, has gone. In the first year, it includes £250,000 spent on private investigators, including the Madrid-based Metodo 3 agency, whose head claimed he would find Madeleine within three months.

Another £133,000 went on campaign management at a time when the couple were being besieged by the world's media, largely spent on public relations advisers. Legal fees swallowed up £120,000, £88,000 went on posters and television and newspaper advertising. There were also the costs of the couple's travels to publicise their campaign for an improved child alerts system.

What the couple want is for the Amber Alert system used widely in the United States to be introduced across Europe. Their supporters have been critical of the 12 hours it took for Portuguese police to alert Spanish border officials located just two hours away by road that Madeleine was missing.

The system was introduced in the mid-1990s after the horrific capture and murder of a young Texan girl. Once police are alerted that a child has vanished, the details of the child are sent immediately to broadcasters and flashed up on motorway signs. It has been credited with saving the lives of around 400 children.

The McCanns lobbied the European parliament to introduce Amber Alert in Europe. Although the EU failed to order a union-wide system, it recommended member states to set up their own systems. France, Greece and, earlier this month, Ireland, have agreed to set up national Amber Alert systems, but, in the UK, the decision has been left to individual police forces.

For the McCanns, the EU recommendation was at least step forward in the absence of any information about Madeleine herself. Spokesman Clarence Mitchell, putting the best gloss he could on the EU decision, said: "Whether it is a centralised system or individual national alerts, all Kate and Gerry want to see is better and quicker cooperation between countries.

"When a child goes missing, every minute counts. Kate and Gerry will continue to push for the best possible alert system for children. How that happens is something for ministers to agree on."

Next weekend, the McCanns are expected to mark the anniversary at home in Rothley, Leicestershire, in private with their now four-year-old twins Sean and Amelie. Back in Praia da Luz, in the church where prayers have been said for centuries for missing fishermen, Father Hubbard is expected to once again read out Kate's message of hope that one day her daughter will be found. At 9.15pm, a new candle will be lit at the time her parents believe she vanished. "We continue to hope because there is nothing to the contrary," he said. "The only thing we can do is hold hands, weep and pray."

Employed by the Portuguese police at the scene as a translator, this property consultant who lived close with his mother to the Ocean Club was given "arguido" – official suspect – status by investigators. The status was revoked and Murat, 35, sued newspapers for £600,000 libel damages.

Goncalo Amaral

Amaral was the senior investigating officer but was turfed off the case after alleging Madeleine's parents were involved. Last year, he brought out his version of events in a book, The Truth Of The Lie, which was not published in English but has reportedly sold thousands of copies on the continent. He claims Madeleine died in a "tragic accident" in the apartment.

Jane Tanner

One of the 'Tapas Seven' whose testimony supports the theory that Madeleine was abducted. Tanner travelled to Praia da Luz this month to help with the reconstruction as she says she saw a barefoot girl being carried from the apartment but did not regard it as unusual at the time. Last year, she said: "I wake up to that image every day. I see him there, striding away, carrying Madeleine and I try desperately to remember more detail."

Madeleine McCann’s parents told yesterday how they take hope from cases of abducted children being found alive years after they were snatched.


Kate and Gerry McCann said the ordeals suffered by child captives such as Austrian Natascha Kampusch and Americans Elizabeth Smart and Shawn Hornbeck show that youngsters can survive even after they go “off radar” for years.

The couple, both doctors from Rothley, Leics, have launched a push to trace Madeleine through the internet by using social networking sites like Facebook.

The pair have also opened a hotline and web portal for anonymous tip-offs from people who may have information about who took Madeleine.

The move comes after heart specialist Gerry launched a poster campaign in the Praia da Luz area on Portugal’s Algarve coastline where she vanished on May 3, 2007.

To coincide with the second anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance, a Portuguese language version of the “Find Madeleine” website has been created.

Gerry, 40, and his wife Kate, 41, said the search for their daughter is focusing on Portugal because residents “have never been properly asked about the information they may have to give”.

The couple were interviewed at the weekend by US chat show host Oprah Winfrey for a show to be broadcast on Monday to mark the second anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance. They made an emotional appeal for information on their daughter, whose sixth birthday is next month. In a statement on their website the McCanns said: “As the second anniversary of Madeleine’s abduction approaches, there is much still to be done.

“We continue to remain focused on our aim – to find Madeleine and bring her back home safely.

Madeleine McCann was probably abducted after walking out of her holiday flat in search of her parents, an expert on her disappearance says.


Criminologist Mark Williams-Thomas said today that it was unlikely an abductor entered apartment 5a at the Ocean Club in Praia Da Luz, Portugal.

The former detective said Madeleine was probably snatched by an opportunistic paedophile as she looked for her parents as they ate with friends at a nearby tapas bar.

He said publicly-available evidence leads him to believe the three-year-old arranged her toys on her bed and left through the unlocked patio door.

Mr Williams-Thomas said the case bears striking similarities to the murder of Sarah Payne, who was snatched from a West Sussex field nine years ago.

He said: "Is it unreasonable to presume that Madeleine woke up and then went in search of her parents at a restaurant within a holiday complex that she had grown familiar with over the course of her holiday?

"Neatly tucking up her toys – as her parents had done to her – she slipped out of the apartment through an insecure patio door.

"This seems all the more credible given what we know happened to eight-year-old Sarah Payne, who was abducted in July 2000 even though she was only out of sight of her family for a matter of seconds."

Mr Williams-Thomas has made his comments after reviewing more than 10,000 documents amassed by Portuguese police during their investigation. He said an abductor would not have arranged the toys on the bed as he would have wanted to escape as quickly as possible.

The expert said a paedophile may have also chosen to take one of the younger and more defenceless twins, Sean and Amelie, sleeping nearby.

Mr Williams-Thomas said: "Based on the evidence provided from within the case files it is more likely that she was abduc-ted after she had left the apartment. A number of factors sugg-est that this is the likely scenario."

Parents Gerry and Kate McCann, of Rothley, Leicestershire, will mark the second anniversary of her disappearance this weekend.

They said the search for Madeleine continues with the "same strength and determination" and they are convinced someone knows where she is.

The McCanns have been left to co-ordinate their own inquiry after the Portuguese police investigation was closed.

Mr Williams-Thomas criticised several aspects of the Portuguese investigation, including botched searches and a complete failure to secure the crime scene.

He said reliance on evidence of dogs trained to detect dead bodies was "significant and damaging", leading police to mistakenly focus on the McCanns.

The couple were made suspects, or arguidos, as a result of ambiguous evidence from specially-trained British dogs and their handlers, he said.

And he said Portuguese authorities must act to register known paedophiles.

So, having no investigative or forensic value, why was it produced?

Could the answer lie in the sudden acknowledgment, by the McCanns, of the Smith family sighting? A sighting they have known about for some time but have previously sought to distance themselves from.

The Channel 4 documentary, 'Madeleine Was Here', stated that the sighting had been linked to Gerry McCann but that this had been dismissed by the PJ. It was not stated that Martin Smith was 60-80% certain that the man he saw that night carrying a child was Gerry McCann.

In the reconstruction of the Smith family sighting, the way the child was carried was similar to the Tanner sighting; held horizontally in an extremely awkward and uncomfortable way. This was grossly misleading and a deliberate attempt to consciously link the two sightings.

The Smith family sighting was unequivocal. The child was carried vertically with the head against the carrier's shoulder. It was this particular way of carrying the child that shocked Martin Smith when he saw Gerry McCann on the BBC news - with a sleeping Sean in his arms -when the McCanns returned to the UK.

The McCanns' latest pair of detectives now believe that there were two people involved in the 'abduction' and that the man seen by Jane Tanner was NOT the 'Ugly Man'.

Therefore the door has been left open to the possibility that the man seen by the Smith family, despite not matching Tanner's description, was, nevertheless, still involved in the 'abduction'.

So, the question is, has this sketch been produced to marry this 'Ugly Man' to the Smith sighting and negate any discussion that the man seen by the Smith family, carrying a lifeless child, was, in fact, Gerry McCann?

Nothing more than a simple case of mistaken identity.

A former RUC man is pursuing “potentially significant” information received after the broadcast of a new TV documentary about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, her family’s spokesman has said.

More than 50 calls were made to the McCanns’ investigative hotline following the airing of Thursday night’s programme, which highlighted three separate sightings of a suspicious man before the little girl vanished.

The callers offered “real, new information”, including details of possible sightings of the missing child, family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said.

Madeleine was nearly four when she went missing from her family’s holiday flat in Praia da Luz, southern Portugal, on May 3 2007 while her parents dined with friends nearby.

The new documentary highlighted three witnesses who saw an odd stranger who appeared to be watching the McCanns’ apartment in the days before the little girl disappeared.

An artist’s impression based on one account of the man, who was described as “very ugly” with pitted skin and a large nose, was also released this week.

Madeleine’s parents Gerry and Kate McCann, from Rothley, Leicestershire, are employing two retired British policemen to continue the search for their daughter.

The former officers — ex-RUC detective inspector Dave Edgar, (52) and ex-detective sergeant Arthur Cowley (57) — scoured thousands of pages from the official Portuguese case files looking for clues. They put the three reports of a suspicious stranger hanging around the McCanns’ apartment together with two sightings of a man carrying a child away from the flat on the night Madeleine vanished.

Mr Mitchell said there was a good response to Thursday night’s programme — Madeleine Was Here — which was watched by 2.6m people on Channel 4.

He said: “The investigative phone line has had at least 50 calls since the documentary.

“It’s a very encouraging response because there is real, new information being given in some of these calls, information that the investigators are now able to set to work on.

“Some of the calls are coming from Portugal, and that’s exactly where we need the information from.

“We will not go into detail but the investigators are very pleased with that response.”

He added: “Many of the calls are offering real information that’s potentially significant and can be worked upon. It’s not speculative or vague.”

The documentary will be shown by Portuguese broadcaster SIC on Monday and negotiations are under way to air it in other countries.

I watched the Channel 4 documentary last night about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann and came to one conclusion - the more anyone looks into it the more confusing it gets.

We were told that several "new" eye witnesses saw a man staring at the McCann's apartment in Praia da Luz from the street in the days before Madeleine vanished, sometimes with a white van parked nearby.

Then we were told that an Irish family saw a man carrying a child through the streets 40 minutes after Jane Tanner, the McCanns friend, saw a man carrying a child in the street outside the apartment.

Interesting though this may be, I'm not convinced either sighting is much of a breakthrough or evidence pointing in any particular direction.

Is anybody seriously suggesting that a child snatcher would wander the streets with their victim for 40 minutes risking discovery at any second ?

If, as the eyewitnesses believed, the man was not a tourist, how would he possibly explain carrying a child who most definitely was on holiday ?

If the man spotted outside the apartment with the van was involved in the kidnapping why would be be carrying the child half a mile away 40 minutes later in the street when he could be 30 miles away speeding down the road ?

Both accounts could be correct but it is hard to see how both could be relevant to what happened to Madeleine.

Her parents tireless appeals for information are impressive but it is hard to see where or when the breakthrough will come.

Speaking from her villa near the Ocean Club, the woman, who has asked not to be named, recalled: “On that night I went to the supermarket at the bottom of the road just before it closed at 8pm.

“As I drove past the entrance to the Ocean Club I saw a woman standing opposite Apartment 5A the McCanns were staying in.

“Even at that time of night the streets were deserted, so I was surprised to see someone there. I remember thinking it was unusual because it is just not the sort of place you would hang around.

“As I drove up to the junction she stepped around to the other side of the street lamp as though she didn’t want me to look at her. She was not carrying a bag or a mobile phone. I thought she might have been waiting for a lift but no car came along while I was there.

“I turned right and could see quite clearly she was looking at Apartment 5A.

Hewlett, a former soldier, is believed to have been living an hour's drive from the resort of Praia da Luz, in Portugal, when she disappeared in April 2007, reports said.

The 64-year-old has a long record of sex attacks on young girls and is wanted by police in Britain and Ireland.

The new information is thought to have emerged after Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, made a string of international media appearances to issue a fresh appeal for information on the second anniversary of her disappearance.

New material released included a computer-aided image of what she may look like now, aged six, while another was a sketch of a suspect seen near the holiday complex.

Hewlett, described by detectives as "cunning" and a "danger to children", is a former Scots Guardsman who has worked as a trawlerman and fairground operator.

He has been jailed several times for sexual offences against young girls.

Hewlett is also wanted by some British police forces for questioning about sex attacks stretching back nearly 30 years.

It is not known if he was interviewed by Portuguese police but they have been informed he may have been involved in her disappearance.

The search for Madeleine is headed by two retired UK policemen, Dave Edgar, a former RUC and Cheshire Police officer, and Arthur Cowley, previously of Merseyside Police, who run Alpha Investigations Group and have been hired by the Find Madeleine Fund to investigate missed leads.

Clarence Mitchell, spokesman for the McCann family, said: "My understanding is he is currently receiving hospital treatment and is currently in Germany.

"Kate and Gerry are fully aware of the development and have been for a little while.

"This is one line of inquiry in an ongoing investigation led by two former police officers.

He added that he believed a number of British police forces had been looking for Mr Hewlett for some time.

"Three police forces have an interest in him and want to talk to him, I believe, about other matters," he said.

"He has a background that would be of interest to any police force. It is potentially significant but I will go no further than that."

He refused to comment on whether Hewlett was in police custody.

The alarm was raised about Hewlett by a couple who met him while on holiday in Portugal.

When Alan and Cindy Thompson met Hewlett, he was living with his wife and six children in a converted Dodge truck travelling from campsite to campsite.

Mr Thompson told the Daily Mirror: "Hewlett befriended us but kept quiet about his terrible past.

"We were mortified and disgusted to discover the truth."

They also described a conversation in which Hewlett said he was approached by some "Gipsy tourists" offering to buy his daughter just before Madeleine went missing.

Mrs Thompson said: "We didn't think too much of this at the time. Ray and his family led a desperate hand-to-mouth lifestyle and someone may have thought he'd be tempted to sell one of his six children."

They also recalled him mentioning a "business" trip to Morocco where there were several alleged sightings of Madeleine in the months after her disappearance.

Yesterday’s claims were made in Germany’s biggest news­paper Bild, which were understood to be based on “police sources”.

The McCanns’ team want to speak to Hewlett but the paedophile – who has been given weeks to live – has said he will only talk about the case if he ­receives tens of thousands of pounds from the Find Maddie fund.

Spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “In the light of the Bild piece, this makes it even more imperative that Mr Hewlett gives any credible information that he may have about Madeleine to the investigators as a matter of priority. It is only right that he and his legal representatives ensure this happens. However, there will be no payment made to him.”

The paedophile was interviewed by British police this week, but they were unable to quiz him about Madeleine’s disappearance.

Hewlett was being sought by West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Inquiry Team, who were conducting a review of an ­assault on an eight-year-old girl in 1975.

Two detectives spent Thursday and yesterday in Aachen, Germany, grilling him.

But under the terms allowing the interview, the detectives were unable to make any ­mention of Madeleine unless ­Hewlett himself volunteered information. He did not.

But Hewlett has agreed to have a DNA test ­taken which will go on to a worldwide Interpol database. This could then be used to cross-match samples obtained during the Madeleine inquiry by the Portuguese police.

A West Yorkshire Police source said: “The only way we would have ventured into the Madeleine investigation would have been through something Hewlett himself told us.

“We are aware of the reports that he has claimed to have seen Madeleine twice but he made no such comments to our detectives.”

Portugal’s Attorney General has this week voiced its opinion that recent reports about British paedophile Raymond Hewlett, who was embroiled in the Madeleine McCann [sic] after it emerged the former convict had been staying in the Algarve at the time of her disappearance, were not strong enough to re-open the case.

Well, if there is no evidence…


Following reports in the UK’s press that branded 64-year-old Hewlett as ‘suspicious’ for being in the Algarve region at the time of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, Portugal’s Attorney General has said none of the reports offered solid facts that justified re-launching the investigation.

Can you have an non-solid fact, a loose fact? Such are the facts that the only things linking Raymond Hewlett to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann are Clarence Mitchell’s opinions, newspaper speculation, the renaming of him as “Maddie pervert” and Cindy and Alan Thompson.

In a statement the Attorney General’s Office made clear “speculation, opinions or commentary is not enough to re-open the investigation”.

Sadly, they were for too long enough to keep the case open and for the innocent McCanns and Robert Murat to be named as arguidos. But now all things have moved on and there are no suspects to go with no evidence and no clue pointing to any crime having occurred.

It continued “when there are concrete facts, that the magistrates in charge of the case consider relevant or credible, the case will be reopened”.

We are not looking for the missing child, we are watching the parents, as ever. And we are watching the children. Nothing creepy about watching someone else’s children, a stranger’s children start school. This is just good wholesome gawping.

After “pain” the other word is “proud”. As all news sources tell us, Kate McCann and Gerry McCann are proud. This from Sky:

It will be a proud moment for her parents when they drop off twins Sean and Amelie for their first day in primary class in Thurmaston, Leics. But the occasion will be tinged with overwhelming sadness for the couple.
Will it? Did anyone ask them or do we now know the McCanns well enough to read their minds?

Madeleine had already been accepted at the school and was meant to start lessons four months after she disappeared while on holiday in Portugal on May 3, 2007.

Staff at Bishop Ellis Roman Catholic Primary kept an empty desk and locker for Madeleine when she vanished - and they still keep a candle burning in the hope she will one day return.
After the private tribute for one would-be pupil, the school feels a need to advertise its link to the famous missing child. A message on the school’s website says:

“We are sorry that we are not yet able to welcome Madeleine to our school as we had hoped to. Our thoughts and prayers remain very much with the McCanns as we continue to pray with them for Madeleine.”
When Madeleine McCann went missing, and as she became the media’s Our Maddie, pupils from the school stood in formation to spell out the words “Find Madeleine”. Will Sean and Amelie McCann now help recreate he scene?

But this is not about the twins, who are not missing. This is about finding a missing child. Really:

An Ofsted report carried out in May this year described the school as “outstanding” and said the pupils were “admirably well behaved”.

Jon Hazlehurst and eight-year-old Lauren were at home when officers arrived at their doorstep and asked them to go to a police station.

A member of the public had seen the pair at a petrol station the day before and thought blonde Lauren was missing Maddie.

The concerned witness had noted down Mr Hazelhurst's car registration plate and immediately notified police.

Officers then visited the family home and Jon and Lauren were taken to a police station for an identification process.

Mr Hazelhurst, of Kingsbridge, Devon, said he thought it was a ''prank''.

He said: ''I was surprised more than anything. My first thought was that it was someone pulling a prank on me before I realised that they were quite serious.

''I've never been called into a police station as a possible kidnapper. The police were very polite and I understood that they had to follow up the lead, even if it didn't come to anything.

''There's always a chance a tip-off like that might lead them to Madeleine.''

Mr Hazelhurst and Lauren pulled in for petrol on their way back from walking their dog at nearby Slapton beach on Sunday.

The following morning officers knocked on Mr Hazlehurst's door asking him and his step-daughter to come to Kingsbridge police station.

The pair went with the officers but were later released after they were identified and it was proved that she was not Maddie.

Sgt Paul O'Neill, of Kingsbridge Police, said Lauren did bear a resemblance to Madeleine McCann - except for a different eye colour.

De McCanns spanden een civiele rechtszaak aan tegen de rechercheur, die inmiddels is gepensioneerd. Het stel is volgens een woordvoerder ''erg blij'' met het vonnis.

Het lichaam van Madeleine is nooit gevonden.

One of the topics to be discussed with the lawyers will be an injunction against further publication of a book by former Portuguese police detective Goncalo Amaral.

Mr Amaral was involved in the initial disappearance investigation but was later taken off the case.

In his book, The Truth Of The Lie, he claims that Madeleine is dead and questions the McCanns' account that she was taken while they were eating with friends nearby.

Earlier this month, a Portuguese judge banned further sale or publication of the book.

The injunction also banned Mr Amaral from repeating his claims about Madeleine or her parents, who are from Rothley, Leicestershire.

At one point, Portuguese police made Mr and Mrs McCann "arguidos", or formal suspects, in their daughter's disappearance.

They were questioned by detectives but their arguido status was later lifted.

Madeleine McCann's parents could receive more than £1m compensation from a former police detective who claimed she was dead, it was claimed last night.

Kate and Gerry McCann are pursuing legal action against Goncalo Amaral after winning a gagging order against the publication of his book. Several thousand copies have reportedly been handed over to the family's legal team.

Mrs McCann returned to Portugal yesterday for the first time since being quizzed by police about Madeleine's disappearance.

After the couple met lawyers and advisers in Lisbon, Mrs McCann said: 'If people believe that she is not alive then people will stop looking for her.

'I just think that it's so vital and so fair for Madeleine that we don't give up on her, that we look for her. We're not going to stop.'

The kidnapper of Madeleine McCann drugged her and her twin brother and sister so they would all be quiet while she was snatched.

A duplicate key may also have been used to gain entrance to the holiday apartment where the children were sleeping, say investigators.

It means the monster is still a threat to children living or holidaying on Portugal’s Algarve and must be caught urgently as he is highly likely to reoffend.

Former police detectives David Edgar and Arthur Cowley have spent months re-analysing every shred of evidence.

They are convinced the ­abductor went to the family’s apartment on May 3 2007 fully prepared with sufficient drugs, probably ­chloroform, to knock out all three children.

The fact that Sean and Amelie, then just 18 months old, failed to wake when the alarm was raised, nor even as they were taken to another apartment in the cold night air, has persuaded the detectives that they, too, must have been drugged.

Had the twins been tested for drugs immediately, any ­medication used could have been established, making it easier to identify the kidnapper, but vital time was lost.

Chloroform can be made ­easily and other sedatives, such as the horse tranquilliser ketamine, are commonly in circulation in the criminal underworld.

Even now, however, experts say there may be forensic clues on clothing or bedding which could yield a breakthrough.

The Sunday Express can further reveal that the McCanns’ private detectives are working on a solid theory about exactly how Madeleine was abducted.

Just as television investigator Donal MacIntyre suggested in this paper three weeks ago, they believe there was a dry run prior to the kidnap that fateful night at apartment 5a of the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz.

While checking the layout of the apartment the night before, the kidnapper probably woke Sean, who in turn woke Madeleine. In the morning she had told Kate and Gerry she was frightened.

The fact that the children woke up is thought to have persuaded the kidnapper to use knock-out drugs when he returned the next night to take Madeleine, three.

On the question of the duplicate key, holidaymakers often left front door keys under the doormats during the day.
A theory emerging is that the kidnapper had a duplicate key to apartment 5a, which could have been used on the night to enter by the front door.

Mr Edgar and Mr Cowley do not believe Madeleine was taken through an open window as it would have been awkward, time consuming and there were no forensic clues left behind.

It is far more likely, they say, that he simply walked out of the front door with her in his arms. It had been thought that the front door was double locked, making it impossible to open from the inside, but this doubt falls away if there was a duplicate key.

The theory suggests the ­kidnapper had been targeting the apartment for a long time and had a detailed knowledge of the lock system.

With the front door unlocked, it is easy to simply pull a latch across to open it from the inside.

Another possibility is that the front door was not double-locked when Kate and Gerry left through the unlocked patio doors to join their seven friends at the resort’s tapas bar some 30 metres from their apartment.

Meanwhile it emerged yesterday that the parents of a two-year-old girl who has gone missing in New Zealand are being ­supported by the ­McCanns.

Aisling Symes vanished from a relative’s house in an Auckland suburb on Monday.

Her mother Angela had been close by, standing beside a washing machine.

There have been reports that the girl was later seen with a woman of Asian appearance.

Detectives believe she was ­abducted. Despite repeated ­appeals for help their searches have so far drawn a blank.
Kate and Gerry McCann said their “thoughts and prayers” were with the family.

The little girl’s father, Allan Symes, who is originally from County Waterford in Ireland, made an emotional plea for her return, saying: “These recent days have proven to be the most harrowing of our lives; no sleep and we feel like we’re barely ­existing, just surviving every ­moment, not knowing where ­Aisling is.”

It has also emerged that police in Sweden are trying to find a girl said to bear a resemblance to Madeleine after a photograph was posted on a website.

The U.K.’s Sunday Express reports it has intervened in the search for missing Madeleine McCann, prompting officials to request satellite images from “US spy chiefs.”

According to the Sunday edition report, the Leicestershire Police have never requested satellite views of Praia da Luz, Portugal, where the little girl disappeared over two years ago.

A source with the Portuguese police told the Express that “We know U.S. spy satellites regularly sweep over Portugal looking at military installations and government facilities.”

The source continued, “So we thought they might actually have image of Praia da Luz on the day of the kidnapping and the preceding days.”

“We hoped spy images may have captured the kidnapper watching the apartment prior to the event or even on the day itself. Obviously, having a picture would have speeded up the apprehension of the offender,” said the source.

According to the Express, the Portuguese source said Leicestershire Police and British officials have been told about the situation and the Portuguese police are “…confident of getting progress because of Gordon Brown’s interest in the case and this apparent special relationship between Britain and the United States.”

The report indicates that Brown may speak directly to President Barack Obama about the issue to achieve cooperation in obtaining the satellite images.

The Express reports it filed a Freedom of Information request upon the U.S. Government’s National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. Nonetheless, through a spokesperson, the agency told the Express “NGA does not provide imagery to private citizens or private companies. For reasons of national security we do not discuss specifics about what images we have or our capabilities.”
