In the early morning hours of January 4, 2009, a pair of powerful earthquakes rattled Papua, Indonesia. The first earthquake, a magnitude 7.6 event, hit at 4:43 a.m., local time. The second, a 7.4 magnitude quake, followed at 7:33 a.m. The earthquakes damaged more than 800 buildings in Manokwari, the city nearest their epicenters, said the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs on January 5. Five people died and approximately 250 were injured during the quakes, reported the UN.
The locations of the two earthquakes and the cluster of smaller associated quakes are illustrated in this image, which shows the topography of the island and the nearby seafloor. The region is geologically complex, says the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and that complexity is reflected in the image. On a large scale, the slab of Earth’s crust that contains the Pacific Ocean is moving southwest into the plate that carries Australia and Papua at a rate of about 112 millimeters per year, says the USGS. The Pacific plate slips under the Australia plate, creating a series of deep trenches on the sea floor where the plates meet.
The January 4 earthquakes, said the USGS, occurred in the region where the Pacific plate sinks below the Australia plate—a subduction zone. The subduction zone in this region is defined by the deep New Guinea trench north of Papua. The trench is the line of dark blue north of the earthquakes’ epicenters, where the depth of the ocean plummets. Though the earthquakes did not occur on the trench fault, they were likely associated with the large-scale motion of the Pacific plate sinking beneath the Australia plate, said the USGS.
More of the geologic complexity of the region is illustrated by the transform fault immediately south of the earthquake zone. A transform fault is a fracture in the Earth’s surface that forms along the edge of two plates moving horizontally past one another. The San Andres fault in California is probably the most famous transform fault. Papua’s transform fault is visible in the topography of the island. Since one side of the fault is higher than the other, a ridge line defines the fault.
If the Pacific plate is moving under the Australia plate, why is there a transform fault? In reality, the boundary between the two plates consists of a number of smaller plates that accommodate the motion of the larger plates. The smaller plates move more or less in concert with the larger plates, but create a messy mishmash of geologic structures associated with a variety of tectonic motions. The Papua region is a jigsaw of underwater trenches, ridges, and fault lines.

6.1 quake in Costa Rica on january 8th
A strong magnitude 6.1 earthquake caused at least 20 deaths in Costa Rica on January 8, 2009, said the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake was centered 30 kilometers north of San Jose (the country’s capital) and just 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles) below the surface, a depth shallow enough to ensure strong shaking at the surface. The quake damaged buildings and sent earth tumbling in the mountainous Central American country. Landslides caused the majority of the deaths, said the USGS.
Costa Rica is prone to geologic hazards. As this image shows, active volcanoes dot the small country, and faults, both active and ancient, weave through the country. The January 8 earthquake was centered near two very active volcanoes, Poás and Irazú. Several faults also line the land near the epicenter. The darker colored faults have caused earthquakes during the historic record. The lighter colored faults have not been recently active. Further evidence of geologic activity lies in the high mountain range, the Cordillera de Talamanca, that runs parallel to the coast.
All of this geologic activity, the January 8 earthquake included, can be attributed to plate tectonics. The Cocos plate, a small portion of Earth’s surface beneath part of the eastern Pacific Ocean, is slipping beneath the portion of Earth’s surface that includes Costa Rica, the Caribbean plate. As the Cocas plate moves under the Caribbean plate at a rate of about 75 millimeters per year, it exerts pressure on the Caribbean plate. That pressure formed the mountains and the volcanoes. To ease the pressure, the earth near the edge of the plate shifts from time to time along weak points or faults. The January 8 earthquake did not occur along any known fault, but was caused by the build up of pressure from the subduction of the Cocas plate under the Caribbean plate, said the USGS.

Arkansas can be struck by 7.0 quake
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A previously unknown fault in eastern Arkansas could trigger a magnitude 7 earthquake with an epicenter near a major natural gas pipeline, a scientist said Wednesday.

Haydar Al-Shukri, the director of the Arkansas Earthquake Center at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, said the fault is separate from the New Madrid fault responsible for a series of quakes in 1811-12 that caused the Mississippi River to flow backward.

Acres of cotton fields cover the fault west of Marianna, about 100 miles east of Little Rock, but stretches of fine sand mixed with fertile soil gave away the fault's location, Al-Shukri said. Liquefied sand bubbled up through cracks in the earth, while ground radar and digs showed vents that let the sand reach the surface, he said.

The fault, likely created in the last 5,000 years, sparked at least one magnitude 7 earthquake in its history. Such temblors cause massive destruction in their wake.

"This is a very, very dangerous (area) at risk of earthquake," Al-Shukri said. "When you talk about (magnitude) 7 and plus, this is going to be a major disaster."

Al-Shukri did not identify a time frame for the potential earthquake.

Such a quake would affect Little Rock and neighboring states such as Tennessee and Mississippi, Al-Shukri said.

The researcher has said a gas pipeline crossed the newly discovered fault. He declined to name the company that owned the pipeline. Al-Shukri had said in a speech at the University of Arkansas' Clinton School of Public Service that the company was building a large line through the area, mirroring the old one's path.

A map made by the Arkansas Public Service Commission shows an Arkla Energy Resources pipe in the area. A spokeswoman for CenterPoint Energy Inc., which owns Arkla, said Wednesday that the company worked closely with public officials to prepare response plans for earthquakes and other natural disasters.

Pipes are "all over the place," spokeswoman Rebecca Virden said. "We, CenterPoint Energy, or someone else has a pipeline everywhere."

Carl Weimer, executive director of the Pipeline Safety Trust in Bellingham, Wash., said companies with lines running through earthquake-prone Southern California have extra safety features including "more valves and different types of valves in case something happens and the pipeline can be shut off quicker."

Clint Stephens, the chief of pipeline safety at the commission, said the federal government would oversee any interstate lines. The U.S. Department of Transportation's Office of Pipeline Safety did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Hundreds of earthquakes occur each year, including several in Arkansas. Most Arkansas earthquakes occur in the state's northeast corner in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, but Al-Shukri said the Marianna fault was not connected because it was too far from the temblors caused by that zone.

During the winter of 1811 and 1812, a series of three earthquakes with magnitudes of around 8 struck the zone and much smaller temblors continue to hit today.
