Teimuraz Gabashvili (born May 23, 1985 in Tbilisi, Georgia) is a tennis player from Russia. He was born in Georgia but moved to Moscow, Russia. He turned pro in 2001. He plays singles and doubles, won futures titles in singles and double in his early career. He began his career at age 6. His brother plays professional basketball in Georgia. When Gabashvili played, he was always nervous so his friends began calling him "Tsunami". He enjoys playing soccer and basketball.
On June 25, 2007, Gabashvili became the first person to ever challenge a call on Wimbledon Center Court with the new system. Gabashvili lost the call. The call was made during a match with Roger Federer, which he lost 3-6, 2-6, 4-6.
In the first round of the 2007 U.S. Open, Gabashvili beat 7th seed Fernando Gonzalez in five sets: 6-4, 6-1, 3-6, 5-7 and 6-4. In the fourth set Gabashivili served for the match at 5-4 but hit three consecutive double faults. He lost the game and the set, but came back in the fifth and final set to win the match.
Zijn finest moment:
Waarom Gabashvili zo'n geweldenaar is?
