George met Jimi Hendrix. At the time Jimi had left the Isley Brothers and Little Richard. Jimi was playing on and off with King Curtis and Curtis Knight during that period.
Jimi and George hung out quite a bit. Together they saw the Mc Coys; George once jammed with Jimi, together with drummer Jimmi Castor (later of Castor Bunch "fame"; George was also present when the Rolling Stones came to see Jimi perform in New York City on 2 July 1966 after the Stones concert at Forest Hills Stadium.
Scandinavian agents heard King George and offered him a contract to come to Europe to sing with an all-black soul band, called the Harlem Kiddies. They arrived in Stockholm in 1966 for three months but ended up touring around two years instead. At that time Chas Chandler brought Jimi to England. George was proud of the fact that he did have a contract, while Jimi didn't. Later, of course, it turned out that Jimi did a lot better than him. Jimi and George ran into each other in Scandinavia, where the Harlem Kiddies warmed up for Jimi Hendrix. George met Jimi again when the Experience played in Copenhagen (21 May 1967). George had two bands during the period: the Harlem Kiddies (playing R&B) and the King George Discovery (playing more psychedelic stuff). After that, George met Jimi a few times in Sweden. George claims that he wasn't too found of Noel Redding, but liked Mitch Mitchell a lot more. George also knew Buddy Miles from his Wilson Pickett period, and also met Billy Cox. When George asked Billy where he came from Billy answered, "we're a band of Gypsies, we come from everywhere.
Discovery took their name from the Charles Lloyd album, but their music was particularly influenced by Jimi Hendrix Experience and soul artists. Discovery was a well-celebrated live band, and they performed for instance at the Sweden's biggest festival of 1968 in Timrå. Also their self-titled LP released in 1968 got an excellent reception.
Right then when everything seemed to look bright, the bassist Sundlin left the group because of differing musical opinions, and besides singing, Clemons began now to play the bass. King George Discovery eventually broke up in 1969 when the guitarist Nordh left them to join a pop band called Blond.

Ben zelf niet echt een psychedelische muziekkenner, maar albums zoals Forever changes van Love en Ta det lungt van Dungen vind ik zeker leuk om zo nu en dan te luisteren. Het is maar goed dat onbekend tussen haakjes staat.

For the track Go Girl, John created a primitive phasing effect by singing into a hairdryer hose while twirling it around his head to the accompaniment of everyone else's hysterics!

With the 'dragons' appearing on the point of attack, John Sparrowhawk would pull the plug, leaving instant darkness, silence and an audience of bemused, but well-entertained kids.
Although totally unfounded, the usual assumption was that this kind of psychedelic happening could not be achieved without the aid of mind-expanding substances. One night at London's trendy Flamingo Club, a guy asked John, "What are you on, man?" John gave his standard answer to this oft-asked question. "Smarties," he replied seriously, helpfully going on to describe the multi-coloured sweeties to his enthralled listener – whom he later discovered to have been a police plant

Het wordt niet echt strikt als psychedelica gezien maar zo zie ik het wel. En echt onbekend is ie ook niet gok ik.

"Halleluwah" -- featuring the Liebezeit/Czukay rhythm section pounding out a monster trance/funk beat; Karoli's and Schmidt's always impressive fills and leads; and Suzuki's slow-building ranting above everything -- is 19 minutes of pure genius. The near-rhythmless flow of "Aumgn" is equally mind-blowing, with swaths of sound from all the members floating from speaker to speaker in an ever-evolving wash, leading up to a final jam. Relatief bekende plaat maar wel een van m'n favourieten, Amerikaanse psychedelische folkzangeres Linda Perhacs met dr album Parallelograms.

Anyone who spent the $200-400 necessary to obtain copies of the original vinyl could attest that the music she made was comparably stunning and beautiful, infused with all the trappings of being a late-sixties love child (in the best possible way).
Ace of Discs reissued her album after unsuccessful attempts to track her down, mastering from a poorly pressed vinyl copy. For whatever reason, the first issue on CD was completely unlistenable on headphones, although delightful in the open air. Since that first go-round, Perhacs has come out of her obscure Pacific Northwest woods with quarter-inch reels of the sessions, and now that Ace of Discs comes round again with a vindicating, expanded reissue, the tray card photo reveals: she's still a babe.
Anyway you eye it, this is a magical, sublimely singular piece of gentle folk-psych that belongs with those lone album classics by folks like Skip Spence or Vashti Bunyan (or the countless other souls that only released one record before disappearing into history's communal farms or funny-farm madness, like Elyse). It is a sound so personal and intimate that I can only hear it in the privacy of my own room. Although it's been near-impossible to gain biographical information about her, the experience of hearing her music reveals so much about her soul and mindset at the time that I really don't think I could share it with anyone else.
As mentioned above, she's a love child in every sense, a young woman blossoming into her sensual world. Of the elements, every song culls its images from her forest environment, permeating down into her own physical core. "Chimacum Rain" is not only the forest's silence and that sound of rain washing over her, but the palpable sexual presence of her lover, too. In almost every evocation of a tactile natural image, there is a mysterious man who physically embodies these characteristics, a tension courses through her body as she sings about these near-deities. And as she reaches the bridge with lines such as "I'm spacing out/ I'm seeing silences between leaves...I'm seeing silences that are his," her voice begins to echo within itself, and her sung notes assuage open the aural synesthesia of the words. The diaphanous taste of lysergic acid creeps to the fore, and what was once a moderately played acoustic song about the forest expands into a hallucinatory clearing as her multi-tracked held tones meld with the infinite. As her voice dilates, so does the background, now all electrically-processed source sounds like xylophones and wind chimes, and all is enveloped by a low, distorted drone that would one day sound like Phill Niblock, created by-- as the liner notes so baldly state it-- "amplified shower hose for horn effects."
It's nothing compared to the album's peak, "Parallelograms". Perhaps you fantasize that Joni Mitchell teaches painting and pottery at your high school, or that Chan Marshall mumbles about the Apocalypse poets during English class, but Perhacs teaching geometry is tantrically hot for teacher. To just read the lyrics of "Quadrehederal/ Tetrahedral/ mono-cyclo-cyber-cilia" is to miss how she and producer Leonard Rosenman assuredly layer her heavenly-sung rounds in concentric circles over a cycling guitar-picked figure, a cumulative effect that reveals a dimension scarcely achieved anywhere else in the world of music. Closer to the Mysterious Voices of Bulgaria or Tim Buckley's cellular self-choir "Starsailor" than Melanie or Linda Ronstadt, Perhacs drops us into drifting clouds of reverberating bells, echoing flute, and ghostly effluence, her throat outside of time. That a dental assistant in Northern California could more effectively convey the psychedelic experience through the use of the technology of experimental effects, be it early Pink Floyd, Fifty-Foot Hose, or Buffy Saint-Marie's electroacoustic Illuminations, is, in every clich餠use of the word, mind-blowing.

Rock music with overtones of psychedelia. Generally blues based, like most rock, but often the most psychedelic aspects of this kind of music come from the juxtaposition of traditional rock sounds with outlandish ones (ie: When the Beatles used a sitar rather than a guitar).
The Psychedelic aspect can also come in the lyrics, though it is rare to see psychedelic lyrics without music that fits the part.
Popular techniques in this genre are to use exotic musical styles and warbly effects in order to simulate (or perhaps even STIMULATE) the effects of psychedelic drugs.

Muziekgenres en subjectiviteit zijn tot op zekere hoogte altijd met elkaar verbonden... dat is niks nieuws. Denk bijvoobeeld aan post rock, of leg maar eens op concrete wijze het verschil tussen bebop en hard bop uit. Of het verschil cool jazz, free jazz, jazz fusion en smooth jazz.

Het is voor mij iig vrij duidelijk wanneer muziek een psychedelische sfeer uitademt, dit album bijvoorbeeld:quote:Psychedelisch is het bijvoeglijk naamwoord dat werd gebruikt voor de experimentele rockmuziek en de bijbehorende cultuur uit het einde van de jaren 60.

Het genre wordt vooral gekenmerkt door zijn sferische karakter. Hiervoor worden verschillende methoden gebruikt: effectapparatuur voor extreme klankvervorming, minimale muziek en improvisatie.

Dit lijkt me wel een interessante muziekstroming weet iemand een paar artiesten die goed zijn om 'in te stappen' in deze stijl?
Mijn favoriet is Paradise Now van Groep1850, het nummer zelf is fantastisch. Van Hollandse bodem en internationaal volgens mij ook gewaardeerd. Hoorde laatst de Arctic Monkeys in een interview zeggen dat ze fan zijn.

Die Paradise Now heb ik ook op vinyl, maar al een paar jaar niet meer geluisterd, vond 'm wel goed geloof ik.

Geloof me, Francis the Mute klinkt heeeel anders Stukken chaotischer en harder.... Das Echo klinkt als een mellow LSD-trip met heerlijk opzwepende, doch subtiele piekmomenten.
Ook vind ik The Mars volta niet psychedelisch of avant gardistisch.... eerder improvisatorisch met jazzy invloeden.
